Espace naturel et paysages religieux : les grottes dans le monde grec

    Get PDF
Among natural sanctuaries, the interest of grottoes is that they may be localized and analyzed using literary and iconographical sources as well as through archaeological discoveries. In Greece, approximately 130 grottoes may be identified for the historical periods. This paper is mainly devoted to matters of space : ritual spaces, if any–in and around grottoes–and the role of grottoes themselves as elements of the religious landscape. I argue that grottoes most often had no need of a clearly defined ritual space, all the more so because, due to their location outside of the urban fabric, they rarely hosted community religious activities and were most often visited by isolated pilgrims

CRETAN EARLY IRON AGE TERRACOTTAS. CONCLUDING REMARKS

    Get PDF
The conference in Catania had two major implications: it made an important contribution to the study of Early Iron Age Crete and also to the study of Greek terracotta figurines in general. The organizers and hosts of this conference, Antonella Pautasso and Oliver Pilz, combined their scientific interests in a joint enterprise. Both have a particular interest in Crete and coroplastic studies, and both are active members of the Association for Coroplastic Studies (ACoSt). The results will be a stimulus for further studies

Kalapodi, Griechenland. Neue Forschungen in der Umgebung der Tempelkomplexe

The sanctuary of Kalapodi in Phocis (central Greece) has been excavated since the 1970s by R. C. Felsch. In the early campaigns, the fieldwork focused on the foundation of the Northern Temple and its predecessors, before the Southern Temple was found and systematically examined between 2004 and 2013 by W.-D. Niemeier. The recent campaigns of 2014 to 2016 led by K. Sporn aimed at a general study of the sanctuary’s area and infrastructure to find answers to the following questions: Can we surely identify the sanctuary of Kalapodi as the oracle of Abai – and where is the town of Abai to be located then? Is it an urban, suburban or even an extra urban sanctuary? Is it possible to determine the sanctuary’s boundaries and how are sacred and profane spaces distributed throughout its area

Reinventing 'The Invention of Tradition'? Indigenous Pasts and the Roman Present

    Get PDF
Thirty years ago Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger introduced The invention of tradition as a concept to explain the creation and rise of certain traditions in times of profound cultural change. Taking stock of current theoretical understandings and focusing on the Roman world, this volume explores the concept of 'inventing traditions' as a means to understand processes of continuity, change and cultural innovation. The notion has been highly influential among studies concerned with the Greek and Roman eastern Mediterranean. Elsewhere in the Roman world and traditions other than Greek, however, have been neglected. This volume aims to evaluate critically the usefulness of the idea of 'inventing traditions' for the successor culture that was Rome. It focuses on the western part of the Roman Empire, which has been virtually ignored by such studies, and on non-Greek traditions. Why, in the Roman present, were some (indigenous) traditions forgotten while others invented or maintained? Using the past for reasons of legitimation in a highly volatile present is a cultural strategy that (also) characterises our present-day, globalized world. Can 'inventing traditions' be regarded as a common human characteristic occurring throughout world history

Tithorea, Griechenland. Topographische Untersuchungen im Stadtgebiet. Die Arbeiten der Jahre 2016 und 2017

In 2016, new archaeological fieldwork at Phokian Tithorea was started by two Ephorates and supported by the German Archaeological Institute Athens (since 2017 a perpetuated cooperation). The fieldwork of 2016/2017 was focussed on cleaning, measuring, and studying the very well preserved 4th century BC fortification of the city as well as the upper intraurban area which is divided by a diateichisma and terrace walls. Furthermore, in an area of caves towering the area of the ancient city, evidence of human occupation during antiquity has been surveyed. The project will be continued in 2018 and beyond with extended landscape fieldwork in the Phokian Kephissos plain around Tithorea

Athen, Griechenland. »Shapes of Ancient Greece«: Ein Projekt zur Digitalisierung der archäologischen Sammlung der Abteilung Athen. Der Beginn der Arbeiten 2021

    Get PDF
The project »Shapes of Ancient Greece« is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and aims at digitizing and re-contextualizing the complete archaeological collection of the Athens branch of the German Archaeological Institute. Furthermore, all the approximately 37.000 objects will be provided with metadata. Most of these objects are pottery sherds. The items will be both photographed and scanned. The »Laser Aided Profiler« is used for generating two-dimensional profil drawings. The »Go!SCAN 3D-Scanner« for creating 3D models of selected objects. The digital images and the metadata will be published in iDAI.objects and linked to other databases under the umbrella of the iDAI.world portal
