Equations of Motion in a Rotating Noninertial Reference Frame

Measurement is an essential part of empirical research. As such, understanding whether the frame of reference in which a measurement occurs is inertial is essential for accurate data. As a rotating sphere, Earth is a non-inertial frame of reference and gives rise to fictitious forces. These forces are derived through vector algebra and further solved through matrix differential equations. The final solution for how velocity evolves over time results in sinusoidal functions with a period of 24 hours for Earth. To test the equations further, rational scenarios are proposed for different locations on the surface of Earth involving different initial velocities, resulting in expected behavior. It is also important to demonstrate that the complete set of solutions collapse into basic kinematic equations for an inertial frame of reference under gravity when rotation of the system is absent. When rebels turn protesters: demobilized insurgents and social uprisings in Colombia

    Get PDF
Following civil conflict peace agreements, societies often continue to experience political volatility. Cleavages that provided reasons for some society segments to seek armed action may still exist, and violence might have increased political polarization. Consequently, peace process societies often face diverse expressions of discontent, including mass protests. This raises the question of if and how demobilized armed group members behave in such protests. Are they willing to participate and use protests as a new form to articulate their interests and political demands? What implications does their participation have for protest dynamics and political stability? How does the rest of society react to such protest participation? This thesis explores these questions by examining the participation of demobilized members of the FARC guerrilla group in Colombia during mass protest waves following the country's 2016 peace agreement. The thesis contains three research articles. Article 1 is theory-testing and explores through qualitative field research in Colombia, including 94 interviews, to which extent existing social movement theories explain variations in former rebels' participation during mass protests, finding that existing links to protesting communities, integration into networks of former comrades, and perceived security risks had the most influence on former rebels' mobilization decision. Building upon the same 94 interviews, Article 2 is theory-building and examines the implications of former FARC rebels' protest participation, finding that their involvement reduced violence levels, enhanced their societal reintegration, and led to a professionalization of the protests. Finally, Article 3 provides an online survey experiment to assess how the protest participation of former FARC members and alleged links to vandalism alter public opinion, finding that former rebels' involvement reduces public support for protests but that vandalism weighs heavier. The analyses speak to the social movement and demobilized rebel literature and highlight the benefits of bridging these two literature streams

The interaction of source and post-event misinformation on the accuracy of eyewitness testimony

The recall of an event such as a robbery has been shown to be affected by how closely post-event information corresponds to what the witness actually saw. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the effect of misleading information may be influenced by expertise of the source of the post-event information. Results revealed that subjects recalled less accurately when they received misleading information in the narrative than when the information corresponded with what they had viewed, whereas the accuracy of the recall was unaffected by whether the witness in the narrative was an expert or a non-expert. Subjects rated the narrative witnesses as having equal credibility. This study suggests that the memory for events related to a crime-scene may be impaired by misleading post-event information, but is unaffected by the source of that misleading information when the sources differ in occupational expertise

Advantages and Limitations of Direct PCR Amplification of Bacterial 16S-rDNA from Resected Heart Tissue or Swabs Followed by Direct Sequencing for Diagnosing Infective Endocarditis: A Retrospective Analysis in the Routine Clinical Setting

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening disease that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Its long-term prognosis strongly depends on a timely and optimized antibiotic treatment. Therefore, identification of the causative pathogen is crucial and currently based on blood cultures followed by characterization and susceptibility testing of the isolate. However, antibiotic treatment starting prior to blood sampling or IE caused by fastidious or intracellular microorganisms may cause negative culture results. Here we investigate the additional diagnostic value of broad-range PCR in combination with direct sequencing on resected heart tissue or swabs in patients with tissue or swab culture-negative IE in a routine clinical setting. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of broad-range PCR from diagnostic material in our patients were 33.3%, 76.9%, 90.9%, and 14.3%, respectively. We identified a total of 20 patients (21.5%) with tissue or culture-negative IE who profited by the additional application of broad-range PCR. We conclude that broad-range PCR on resected heart tissue or swabs is an important complementary diagnostic approach. It should be seen as an indispensable new tool for both the therapeutic and diagnostic management of culture-negative IE and we thus propose its possible inclusion in Duke’s diagnostic classification scheme
