    Toxoplasmosis in South Africa

Toxoplasmosis has become established as an important parasitic disease of man and other warm-blooded vertebrates. Of world-wide distribution, it produces effects ranging from asymptomatic invasion to fatal infection. In contrast to surveys of incidence and case reports emanating from other countries, only a few isolated cases have been described in South Africa.I-< This may be associated with lack of clinical recognition, inadequate facilities for laboratory confirmation of infection, or an actual low rate of incidence. The purpose of the author is to try to aid the elucidation of these features by a brief survey of the present concept of the disease and the eventual establishment of adequate diagnostic facilities in South Africa and, in due course, to utilize these laboratory methods in a serological survey ro gain an indication of the rate of incidence in this country
