The Mechem division of Denel (Pty.) ltd., South Africa, has a history going back to the late 1960s, when it was a unit of the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Specializing in landmine detection, demining and UXO disposal, Mechem also offers contract research and development, well-equipped laboratories and an explosive test range, which is used for the development and evaluation of equipment and augments workshops

Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of M.D. in the Faculty of Medicine University of Pretoria Pretoria May 1968The incidence of dental caries in South Africa is high (Ockerse, 1947) and in 1955 the Minister of Health and Nutrition instructed his departments to appoint a committee to investigate methods by which dental health in this country could be improved. In 1957 a report submitted by this committee emphasized, among other recommendations, the need for fundamental research into dental health. The report was accepted by the Minister and implementation of its proposals was begun in the same year by the establishment of the Nutrition and Dental Health Research Group of the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research under the honorary directorship of Professor C.L. de Jager, Head of the Department of Oral and Dental Pathology, and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Pretoria.IT201

A collection of Phacochoerus aethiopicus teeth from the Kalkbank middle stone age site, central Transvaal

Main ArticleA Middle Stone Age site at Kalkbank, near Pietersburg in the northern Transvaal, has recently been excavated for the Archaeological Survey by R. Mason: a description of the site and the archaeological findings is shortly to be published (Mason, in press). In addition to the cultural material, animal remains are abundant; the present paper deals with the Suid material which has been found at Kalkbank. This consists of a large collection of teeth, almost all isolated, comprising (apart from much damaged fragments) 53 reasonably complete third, 29 second and 10 first molars, together with 29 upper and 25 lower canines and a single last milk molar. As will be shown later, this material is all referable to the extinct Phacochoerus aethiopicus (Pallas). It constitutes the best collection of material of this species from a single locality that is at present available for study, and therefore adds something to our knowledge of the characteristics of the dentition of this species. The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Researc

Scalable ion traps for quantum information processing

We report on the design, fabrication, and preliminary testing of a 150 zone array built in a `surface-electrode' geometry microfabricated on a single substrate. We demonstrate transport of atomic ions between legs of a `Y'-type junction and measure the in-situ heating rates for the ions. The trap design demonstrates use of a basic component design library that can be quickly assembled to form structures optimized for a particular experiment

Chiefly arising from their sporting potentialities in big game angling, the large “Bill-fishes”, or Marlin, and Sword-fishes have attracted considerable attention in recent times. Commercial fishermen of Japan and anglers of the United States have been most ardent in the pursuit of these peculiar creatures. While a good deal has been learnt about them, there still remains much to discover. In the case of the Marlins, for example, hardly anything is known of their reproduction, of the larval or postlarval early forms, and even those who have studied these fishes from ample material over a wide area are as yet uncertain of the absolute identity of the species, and are often unable to identify with any certainty the rare occasional reasonably small specimens that are encountered. In South Africa shore angling is so good throughout virtually the entire year that there has been little incentive to explore the possibilities further out, especially as quiet seas are a rare condition. Quite recently, however, big game angling at sea has developed almost explosively and increasingly large fishes are being captured. During our extensive travels in the tropical Western Indian Ocean it became obvious that great numbers of the larger angling fishes were present, including those treated here. Although that area is windy and storm-lashed for much of the year, remote from facilities, and barren, its potentialities are relatively unexplored, but are clearly so great that it will not be long before it becomes recognised as one of the chief big game angling areas of the world. These fishes are at present placed in the families Xiphiidae and Istiophoridae. The latter embraces the Sailfishes, the Marlins and the Spearfishes, usually granted distinction by only generic rank. In my opinion, however, they merit at least sub-family rank.Rhodes University Libraries (Digitisation)The main funds for this work were provided by the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, who also made a special grant in February 1956 to cover considerable traveling that numerous Marlin catches rendered necessary
