    NanoWalker: a fully autonomous highly integrated miniature robot for nanoscale measurements

    The aim of this project is to develop the smallest and most sophisticated wireless fully autonomous instrumented robot capable of subatomic movements. The robot named 'NanoWalker' should bring a new paradigm in the way instruments are built while providing a sophisticated platform for a new range of applications. The project involves primarily the investigation of a new legged locomotion based on piezo-actuators with advanced micro-assembly techniques applied to complex embedded electronic systems; the development of new miniature instruments, micro-manipulators, integrated behavior for controlling, searching and scanning at the atomic scale; and the development of a subatomic navigation system. Besides all the new technologies and techniques that we intend to develop and which will be applicable to many areas and systems, the NanoWalker should provide a suitable yet more flexible and powerful platform compared to traditional macro-scaled instruments. It is anticipated that this new form of highly integrated autonomous microsystem will be used as the main building block for a new generation of measurement and inspection systems.     Inter-individual genetic variation in the temperature response of Leptosphaeria species pathogenic on oilseed rape

    It is important to understand the likely response of plant pathogens to increased temperatures due to anthropogenic climate change. This includes evolutionary change due to selection on genetically based variation in growth rate with temperature. We attempted to quantify this in two ways. First, radial mycelial growth rates in agar culture were determined for a collection of 44 English isolates of Leptosphaeria maculans and 17 isolates of L. biglobosa, at 14 temperatures. For L. maculans the genetic variances in four parameters were measured: minimum temperature allowing growth, optimum temperature, growth rate at the optimum temperature and growth rate at the highest usable temperature, 31.8°C. The standard deviations were 0.068 °C , 1.28°C, 0.21 mm day-1 and 0.31 mm day 1 °C-1 respectively. For L. biglobosa, these figures were, respectively: immeasurably small, 1.31 °C, 0.053 mm day-1 and 0.53 mm day- °C-1. In addition, the incidence and severity of phoma stem canker in planta over a natural growing cycle at four temperatures (16°C, 20°C, 24°C and 28°C) around the average culture optimum were determined. There was no correlation between in vitro and in planta growth, and the decrease in pathogen measures either side of the optimum temperature was much less for in planta growth than for in vitro growth. We conclude that both pathogens have the capacity to evolve to adapt to changes in environmental conditions, but that predictions of the effect of this adaptation, or estimates of heritability in natural conditions, cannot be made from measurements in vitro

    Work is focused on experimental determination of dynamic mechanical properties (i.e. compressibility and relaxation parameters) of the air-water interface during compression in the presence of DPPC monolayer. The surface dynamics was studied with the Langmuir-Wilhelmy balance in several temperatures. The influence of another surfactant (CTAB) present in the aqueous subphase on the surface with DPPC was also investigated. Discussion of the results is based on the concepts of surface rheology and physical chemistry of the interface

    Evaluation and Mitigation of Carbon Footprint of Medical Inhalers

    Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) contain propellants with high Global Warming Potential. This paper compares six pMDI products from the Polish market in terms of their contribution to environmental burden by analyzing the release and residuals of greenhouse gases during use and disposal. The results show that these similar medical products have markedly different carbon footprint values (12-22.5 kg CO2e), which might be mitigated by certain measures involving technical and legal actions

    Preparation and Characterization of Biocompatible Polymer Particles as Potential Nanocarriers for Inhalation Therapy

    Aim. Investigation of the possibility of manufacturing biocompatible polymer particles which have the required properties for pulmonary delivery via inhalation and simultaneously act as vehicles of nanotherapeutics. Methods. Nanostructures were obtained from biocompatible polysaccharides by successive oxidation and reactive coiling in the aqueous phase. The resultant nanosuspensions of PAD (polyaldehyde dextran) and DACMC (dialdehyde carbomethylcellulose) were used as precursors in spray drying production of powders at variable process conditions. The resultant dry microparticles were characterized by SEM observations, and their properties related to delivery by inhalation were determined by laser diffraction spectrometry following the dispersion in the commercial inhaler. Finally, the possibility of the reconstitution of nanosuspensions by powders rehydration was evaluated. Results. Synthesized nanoparticles had size of 120–170 nm. Microparticles after drying had size of 0.5–5 ”m and different surface morphology. Aerosolized particles obtained from powder dispersion in the inhaler had the volumetric median diameter of ~2 and ~1 ”m for PAD and DACMC, respectively. Hydration of powders led to restoring the nanosuspensions with the average particle size similar to the precursor. Conclusions. PAD and DACMC can be used to obtain nanostructures which, after processing, take a form suitable for effective delivery to the lungs via inhalation

    Potential benefit of intra-operative administration of ketorolac on breast cancer recurrence according to the patient's body mass index

    Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are currently used in some countries as analgesics in primary cancer surgery. Retrospective studies suggest that NSAIDs could reduce breast cancer recurrences. Because NSAIDs also act on biological mechanisms present in patients with increased adiposity, we aimed at assessing whether the intra-operative administration of ketorolac or diclofenac would be associated with a reduction of recurrence in patients with elevated body mass index (BMI). Methods: We considered two institutional retrospective series of 827 and 1007 patients evaluating the administration of ketorolac (n = 529 with, n = 298 without) or diclofenac (n = 787 with, n = 220 without). The BMI subgroups were defined as less than 25 kg/m(2) (lean) and 25 or more kg/m(2) (overweight and obese). Cumulative incidence estimation of distant metastases as well as Fine-Gray and Dixon-Simon models was used. These analyses were adjusted for clinico-pathological variables. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: The administration of ketorolac was statistically significantly associated with decreased incidence of distant recurrences (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.37 to 0.96, P = .03). In particular, the association was evident in the high-body mass index (BMI) group of patients (aHR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.31 to 0.96, P = .04). The administration of diclofenac was not statistically significantly associated with decreased incidence of distant recurrences, either in the global population or in the BMI subgroups. Conclusions: These results show that the intra-operative administration of ketorolac, but not diclofenac, is statistically significantly associated with a reduction of distant recurrences in patients with increased BMI. Altogether, this study points to a potentially important repositioning of ketorolac in the intra-operative treatment of patients with elevated BMI that, if prospectively validated, might be as impactful as and cheaper than adjuvant systemic anticancer therapies
