Chemical composition of hydrothermal carbonates and barites from the Deryugin Basin, Sea of Okhotsk

    No full text
Data on hydrothermal activity in the Deryugin Basin (Sea of Okhotsk) are reviewed. Barites and carbonates found in sediment cores sampled at feet of hydrothermal mounds were subdivided into recycled and authigenic types. Recycled minerals were represented by crystals and aggregations of travertine-like barite and fragments of barite and carbonate tubes. Authigenic formations included: (1) carbonate nodules; (2) barite micronodules; (3) transparent colorless barite that generated numerous small nests and filled cavities in sediments; (4) yellow barite formed thin (0.5 mm) veins; and (5) white barite cemented small aggregations of coarse-grained sediments. A detailed examination of formation processes of authigenic minerals in the bottom sediment cores allowed to conclude that, there, hydrothermal activity is still going on today. This was confirmed by high methane concentration in near-bottom water above a field of hydrothermal barite minerals

Chemical and isotopic compositions of authigenic carbonates from bottom sediments of Northwest Pacific marginal seas

The paper presents data on authigenic carbonate distribution in Holocene - Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Okhotsk, Japan, East China, Philippine and South China Seas. Description of carbonate samples, their chemical and isotope compositions are given. Chemical analysis of the samples indicates that almost all authigenic carbonates are composed of calcite or magnesian calcite; and only in one case, of siderite. Oxygen isotopic composition (d18O) ranges from +37.7 to +26.1 per mil (SMOW); it is, probably, connected with different temperatures of carbonate formation. A distinct geographic regularity is traced. Decrease in d18O values is observed from the cold Okhotsk Sea to the warm South China Sea. A very wide range of carbon isotopic composition (d13C from -42 to +3.8 per mil) indicates different sources of carbonic acid required for formation of these carbonates. As a basis for carbon isotopic composition we can distinguish three sources of carbonic acid in the studied sediments: microbiological methane oxidation, organic matter destruction during sediment diagenesis, and dissolved organogenic limestone. Thus, formation of authigenic carbonates in sediments from the marginal seas of the Northwest Pacific results from: 1) sediment diagenesis, 2) methane oxidation in zones of gas anomalies, 3) their precipitation from the supersaturated by carbonates sea shoal waters of tropical sea lagoons

Diagnosis and treatment of metabolic syndrome in health centres

We examined 412 patients Sochi sanatoria with the metabolic syndrome. Used for the diagnosis developed complex of functional and clinical laboratory examination. Spa treatment implied a more active and personalized use of non-drug methods to appropriately chosen background medical therapy. Studies have shown that the use of a modified treatment program is effective for the vast majority of patients

Heavy mineral composition of bottom sediments from the South China Sea

    No full text
This paper presents results of investigations of unusual carbonate formations found in bottom sediments of the South China Sea shelf. These sediments were sampled from a deep fracture found by geophysical methods. According to gas-geochemical data there are high concentrations of methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide in bottom waters of this area. The carbonate formations were defined as calcium siderite or siderodot by roentgenostructural, microprobe, atomic absorption, and thermal analyses, asawellas infrared spectroscopy. Formation of this mineral results from carbon dioxide and methane flows through bottom sediments
