The concept of social pharmacy
The 13th International Social Pharmacy Workshop will be held in Malta in July 2004. The Social Pharmacy Workshops are international conferences for research in social and behavioural pharmacy. Meetings are held every second year and participation has grown steadily since the first Workshop was held in Helsinki, Finland, in 1980. Following the successful 2002 conference in Sydney, Australia, the 2004 meeting in Malta will be the first one held in the Mediterranean area!peer-reviewe
Divergence-type 2+1 dissipative hydrodynamics applied to heavy-ion collisions
We apply divergence-type theory (DTT) dissipative hydrodynamics to study the
2+1 space-time evolution of the fireball created in Au+Au relativistic
heavy-ion collisions at 200 GeV. DTTs are exact hydrodynamic
theories that do no rely on velocity gradient expansions and therefore go
beyond second-order theories. We numerically solve the equations of motion of
the DTT for Glauber initial conditions and compare the results with those of
second-order theory based on conformal invariants (BRSS) and with data. We find
that the charged-hadron minumum-bias elliptic flow reaches its maximum value at
lower in the DTT, and that the DTT allows for a value of
slightly larger than that of the BRSS. Our results show that the differences
between viscous hydrodynamic formalisms are a significant source of uncertainty

Clustered bottlenecks in mRNA translation and protein synthesis
We construct an algorithm that generates large, band-diagonal transition
matrices for a totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) with local hopping
rate inhomogeneities. The matrices are diagonalized numerically to find
steady-state currents of TASEPs with local variations in hopping rate. The
results are then used to investigate clustering of slow codons along mRNA.
Ribosome density profiles near neighboring clusters of slow codons interact,
enhancing suppression of ribosome throughput when such bottlenecks are closely
spaced. Increasing the slow codon cluster size, beyond , does not
significantly reduce ribosome current. Our results are verified by extensive
Monte-Carlo simulations and provide a biologically-motivated explanation for
the experimentally-observed clustering of low-usage codons
Tunable few electron quantum dots in InAs nanowires
Quantum dots realized in InAs are versatile systems to study the effect of
spin-orbit interaction on the spin coherence, as well as the possibility to
manipulate single spins using an electric field. We present transport
measurements on quantum dots realized in InAs nanowires. Lithographically
defined top-gates are used to locally deplete the nanowire and to form
tunneling barriers. By using three gates, we can form either single quantum
dots, or two quantum dots in series along the nanowire. Measurements of the
stability diagrams for both cases show that this method is suitable for
producing high quality quantum dots in InAs.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Disorder-induced magnetic memory: Experiments and theories
Beautiful theories of magnetic hysteresis based on random microscopic
disorder have been developed over the past ten years. Our goal was to directly
compare these theories with precise experiments. We first developed and then
applied coherent x-ray speckle metrology to a series of thin multilayer
perpendicular magnetic materials. To directly observe the effects of disorder,
we deliberately introduced increasing degrees of disorder into our films. We
used coherent x-rays to generate highly speckled magnetic scattering patterns.
The apparently random arrangement of the speckles is due to the exact
configuration of the magnetic domains in the sample. In effect, each speckle
pattern acts as a unique fingerprint for the magnetic domain configuration.
Small changes in the domain structure change the speckles, and comparison of
the different speckle patterns provides a quantitative determination of how
much the domain structure has changed. How is the magnetic domain configuration
at one point on the major hysteresis loop related to the configurations at the
same point on the loop during subsequent cycles? The microscopic return-point
memory(RPM) is partial and imperfect in the disordered samples, and completely
absent when the disorder was not present. We found the complementary-point
memory(CPM) is also partial and imperfect in the disordered samples and
completely absent when the disorder was not present. We found that the RPM is
always a little larger than the CPM. We also studied the correlations between
the domains within a single ascending or descending loop. We developed new

Fixed Point of the Finite System DMRG
The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is a numerical method that
optimizes a variational state expressed by a tensor product. We show that the
ground state is not fully optimized as far as we use the standard finite system
algorithm, that uses the block structure B**B. This is because the tensors are
not improved directly. We overcome this problem by using the simpler block
structure B*B for the final several sweeps in the finite iteration process. It
is possible to increase the numerical precision of the finite system algorithm
without increasing the computational effort.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Low temperature spin diffusion in the one-dimensional quantum nonlinear -model
An effective, low temperature, classical model for spin transport in the
one-dimensional, gapped, quantum non-linear -model is developed.
Its correlators are obtained by a mapping to a model solved earlier by Jepsen.
We obtain universal functions for the ballistic-to-diffusive crossover and the
value of the spin diffusion constant, and these are claimed to be exact at low
temperatures. Implications for experiments on one-dimensional insulators with a
