Hydrodynamics of a new concept of primary containment by energy absorption
Fluid dynamical analysis for idealized reactors system with spherical symmetry determines the effect which the destructive component of a nuclear accident produces on primary containment structures. Steel strands surrounding the reactor cavity in the biological shield exhibit plastic deformation to achieve the energy absorption
Information transfer through a one-atom micromaser
We consider a realistic model for the one-atom micromaser consisting of a
cavity maintained in a steady state by the streaming of two-level Rydberg atoms
passing one at a time through it. We show that it is possible to monitor the
robust entanglement generated between two successive experimental atoms passing
through the cavity by the control decoherence parameters. We calculate the
entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state as a function of the
micromaser pump parameter. We find that this is in direct correspondence with
the difference of the Shannon entropy of the cavity photons before and after
the passage of the atoms for a reasonable range of dissipation parameters. It
is thus possible to demonstrate information transfer between the cavity and the
atoms through this set-up.Comment: Revtex, 5 pages, 2 encapsulated ps figures; added discussion on

Entanglement in a two-identical-particle system
The definition of entanglement in identical-particle system is introduced.
The separability criterion in two-identical particle system is given. The
physical meaning of the definition is analysed. Applications to two-boson and
two-fermion systems are made. It is found new entanglement and correlation
phenomena in identical-boson systems exist, and they may have applications in
the field of quantum information.Comment: 4 page
Speed of ion trap quantum information processors
We investigate theoretically the speed limit of quantum gate operations for
ion trap quantum information processors. The proposed methods use laser pulses
for quantum gates which entangle the electronic and vibrational degrees of
freedom of the trapped ions. Two of these methods are studied in detail and for
both of them the speed is limited by a combination of the recoil frequency of
the relevant electronic transition, and the vibrational frequency in the trap.
We have experimentally studied the gate operations below and above this speed
limit. In the latter case, the fidelity is reduced, in agreement with our
theoretical findings. //

Electronic Structure of Atoms in Magnetic Quadrupole Traps
We investigate the electronic structure and properties of atoms exposed to a
magnetic quadrupole field. The spin-spatial as well as generalized time
reversal symmetries are established and shown to lead to a two-fold degeneracy
of the electronic states in the presence of the field. Low-lying as well as
highly excited Rydberg states are computed and analyzed for a broad regime of
field gradients. The delicate interplay between the Coulomb and various
magnetic interactions leads to complex patterns of the spatial spin
polarization of individual excited states. Electromagnetic transitions in the
quadrupole field are studied in detail thereby providing the selection rules
and in particular the transition wavelengths and corresponding dipole
strengths. The peculiar property that the quadrupole magnetic field induces
permanent electric dipole moments of the atoms is derived and discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Integrable versus Non-Integrable Spin Chain Impurity Models
Recent renormalization group studies of impurities in spin-1/2 chains appear
to be inconsistent with Bethe ansatz results for a special integrable model. We
study this system in more detail around the integrable point in parameter space
and argue that this integrable impurity model corresponds to a non-generic
multi-critical point. Using previous results on impurities in half-integer spin
chains, a consistent renormalization group flow and phase diagram is proposed.Comment: 20 pages 11 figures obtainable from authors, REVTEX 3.
Grand challenges for aerosol science and technology
The Grand Challenges Workshop for Aerosol Science and Technology was organized for the International Aerosol Conference (IAC), in St Louis, September 2–7, 2018. The purpose of the workshop was to identify “Grand Challenges” for aerosol science and technology in the next decade and thereby indicate a viable research road map for the aerosol community
Evidence from Identified Particles for Active Quark and Gluon Degrees of Freedom
Measurements of intermediate pT (1.5 < pT < 5.0 GeV/c) identified particle
distributions in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies display striking
dependencies on the number of constituent quarks in the corresponding hadron.
One finds that elliptic flow at intermediate pT follows a constituent quark
scaling law as predicted by models of hadron formation through coalescence. In
addition, baryon production is also found to increase with event multiplicity
much faster than meson production. The rate of increase is similar for all
baryons, and seemingly independent of mass. This indicates that the number of
constituent quarks determines the multiplicity dependence of identified hadron
production at intermediate pT. We review these measurements and interpret the
experimental findings.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, proceedings for SQM2006 conference in Los Angele
