    Odontogenic Myxoma Of The Maxilla: A Clinical Case Report And Review Of Literature

    Odontogenic myxomas are rare benign mesenchymal  tumours of head and neck with a potential for  local infiltration and recurrence. They appear to originate from the dental papilla, follicle or periodontal ligament in mandible and less commonly the maxilla.These usually present in second or third decade of life as slowly progressive space occupying lesion in the jaw giving a  mixed radiopaque-radiolucent appearance.The treatment is considered to be wide local excision in view of high recurrence with curettage alone. Here, we present a case of odontogenic myxoma of maxilla, in a 40 year old lady, with a brief review of  literature, clinical, radiological, histopathological characteristics and therapeutic modality employed.

    Collapse of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotube Bundles under Hydrostatic Pressure

    We use classical molecular dynamics simulations to study the collapse of single (SWNT) and double-walled (DWNT) carbon nanotube bundles under hydrostatic pressure. The collapse pressure (pc) varies as 1/R^3, where R is the SWNT radius or the DWNT effective radius. The bundles show ~ 30% hysteresis and the hexagonally close packed lattice is completely restored on decompression. The pc of DWNT is found to be close to the sum of its values for the inner and the outer tubes considered separately as SWNT, demonstrating that the inner tube supports the outer tube and that the effective bending stiffness of DWNT, D(DWNT) ~ 2D(SWNT) . We use an elastica formulation to derive the scaling and the collapse behavior of DWNT and multi-walled carbon nanotubes.Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in Physical Review B.     Pharmacovigilance analysis in a rural tertiary care hospital in North India: a retrospective study

    Background: The main motive of PvPI (Pharmacovigilance Programme of India) is to collect valuable data so that signals can be generated from reported adverse drug events (ADEs). It also tries to establish their causality so that ADEs can be labelled as adverse drug reactions (ADRs) beyond any doubt.Methods: This retrospective observational study done in rural set up tertiary care teaching hospital collected data through voluntary reporting in ADR form of PvPI for period of 6 month. Causality assessment was done using WHO causality assessment scale.Results: In 150 reported cases, majority ADRs were due to tuberculosis, cancer and HIV treatments. Gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system were the major organs involved. Most ADRs occurred within first day of drug intake. Around 15% required hospitalization. 55% ADRs were probable and 41% were possible in nature. Vertigo and depression was most frequent ADR in MDR therapy. Rashes, pruritis, fever and joint pain was frequent in antiretroviral therapy. Dysguesia, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and constipation was frequent in patients taking anticancer drugs. Platins and antibiotics used for cancer therapy cause most cancer treatment ADRs.Conclusions: ADRs add to hospitalization expenses, insurance costs and increase in work loss days besides addition to patient suffering. Prior knowledge can help in better prescriptions and prevent valuable resource loss. Reasons for under-reporting of ADRs can be complacency, ignorance, lack of financial incentives for reporting, fear of litigation, claims of compensation and lack of time in busy hospital schedules

    Propantheline induced pharmacokinetic variability in lithium bioavailability in human volunteers after co-administration with lithium and imipramine

    Background: Lithium is used commonly in bipolar illness. It is co administered with many other drugs like imipramine, fluoxetine to improve the clinical efficacy of the therapy. Co administrations of other drugs like NSAIDS and GIT drugs for various ailments are also common. As this drug possesses a narrow therapeutic range, effect of other drugs on its pharmacokinetic parameters is important to achieve its therapeutic goal as well as to avoid serious adverse effect.Methods: Total n= 30 human volunteers were enrolled in the study. After randomization subjects were divided into three study groups. Group 1 was given lithium (900mg) alone while group 2 and 3 were given lithium (900mg) and imipramine (25mg) at 0h. Group 3 patients were administered propantheline (15mg) 1 hr prior to lithium and imipramine.Results: In group 2 (Li+Imp) treatment with imipramine produced a significant decrease in C max (p<0.01), increase in Tmax (p<0.001) and a significant fall in AUC (p<0.001) of lithium. There was no significant change in Kel and hence no change in T1/2 was observed. In group 3 ((Li+Imp+Pro) addition of propantheline accentuated the imipramine induced fall in serum lithium concentration at all the sampling points as shown in Fig 1.It significantly accentuated the imipramine induced fall in Cmax of lithium (p<0.05) and prolonged the T max. There was no significant difference between Kel, T 1/2 and AUC of group 2 (Li+Imp) versus group 3 (Li+Imp+Pro).Conclusions: Propantheline even being the anticholinergic drug was unable to show its effect, this is due to high ceiling masking in antagonistic action of imipramine

    Gene Discovery and Advances in Finger Millet [Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.] Genomics—An Important Nutri-Cereal of Future

    The rapid strides in molecular marker technologies followed by genomics, and next generation sequencing advancements in three major crops (rice, maize and wheat) of the world have given opportunities for their use in the orphan, but highly valuable future crops, including finger millet [Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.]. Finger millet has many special agronomic and nutritional characteristics, which make it an indispensable crop in arid, semi-arid, hilly and tribal areas of India and Africa. The crop has proven its adaptability in harsh conditions and has shown resilience to climate change. The adaptability traits of finger millet have shown the advantage over major cereal grains under stress conditions, revealing it as a storehouse of important genomic resources for crop improvement. Although new technologies for genomic studies are now available, progress in identifying and tapping these important alleles or genes is lacking. RAPDs were the default choice for genetic diversity studies in the crop until the last decade, but the subsequent development of SSRs and comparative genomics paved the way for the marker assisted selection in finger millet. Resistance gene homologues from NBS-LRR region of finger millet for blast and sequence variants for nutritional traits from other cereals have been developed and used invariably. Population structure analysis studies exhibit 2-4 sub-populations in the finger millet gene pool with separate grouping of Indian and exotic genotypes. Recently, the omics technologies have been efficiently applied to understand the nutritional variation, drought tolerance and gene mining. Progress has also occurred with respect to transgenics development. This review presents the current biotechnological advancements along with research gaps and future perspective of genomic research in finger millet

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) continues to predominate the cause of morbidity, and mortality in the developing world. The disease affects all the organ systems, and presents in various pathologic disease states. We report an uncommon manifestation of this rather common infectious disease in a 19-year-old male. Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia occurring as a consequence of the tuberculosis infection itself is an exceedingly rare occurrence, and at the time of writing of this paper, only 15 such published reports exist in the English literature so far
