Radiographic comparison between cervical spine lateral and whole-spine lateral standing radiographs
Study DesignâRetrospective radiologic study. ObjectiveâThe sagittal alignment of the cervical spine can be evaluated using either a lateral cervical radiograph or a whole-spine lateral view on which the cervical spine is included. To our knowledge, however, no report has compared the two. The purpose of this work is to identify the difference in radiographic parameters between the cervical spine lateral view and the whole-spine lateral view. MethodsâWe retrospectively analyzed 59 adult patients suffering from neck pain with cervical spine lateral radiographs and whole-spine lateral radiographs from November 2007 to December 2011. The radiographs were measured using standard techniques to obtain the following parameters from the two different radiographs: occipitalâC2 angle, C2âC7 angle, C7âsternal angle, sternal slope, T1 slope, C2 central offset distance, the distance between C2 and C7 plumb lines, C4 anteroposterior (AP) diameter, the ratio of C2 central off distance to C4 AP diameter, the ratio of plumb lines' distance to C4 AP diameter. ResultsâWe found that the occipitalâC2 angle, sternal slope, and C4 AP diameter were similar, but the C2âC7 angle, C7âsternal angle, T1 slope, C2 central offset distance, distance between C2 and C7 plumb lines, ratio of C2 central off distance to C4 AP diameter, and ratio of plumb lines' distance to C4 AP diameter were different. However, the error of measurement was greater than the small angular and linear differences between the two views. ConclusionsâMost numerical values of the measured radiographic parameters appear to be different between the two views. However, the two views are comparable because the numerical differences were smaller than the errors of measurement
New Radiographic Index for Occipito-Cervical Instability
Study DesignRetrospective study.PurposeTo propose a new radiographic index for occipito-cervical instability.Overview of LiteratureSymptomatic atlanto-occipital instability requires the fusion of the atlanto-occipital joint. However, measurements of occipito-cervical translation using the Wiesel-Rothman technique, Power's ratio, and basion-axial interval are unreliable because the radiologic landmarks in the occipito-cervical junction lack clarity in radiography.MethodsOne hundred four asymptomatic subjects were evaluated with lateral cervical radiographs in neutral, flexion and extension. They were stratified by age and included 52 young (20â29 years) and 52 middle-aged adults (50â59 years). The four radiographic reference points were posterior edge of hard palate (hard palate), posteroinferior corner of the most posterior upper molar tooth (molar), posteroinferior corner of the C1 anterior ring (posterior C1), and posteroinferior corner of the C2 vertebral body (posterior C2). The distance from posterior C1 and posterior C2 to the above anatomical landmarks was measured to calculate the range of motion (ROM) on dynamic radiographs. To determine the difference between the two age groups, unpaired t-tests were used. The statistical significance level was set at p<0.05.ResultsThe ROM was 4.8±7.3 mm between the hard palate and the posterior C1, 9.9±10.2 mm between the hard palate and the posterior C2, 1.7±7.2 mm between the molar to the posterior C1, and 10.4±12.1 mm between the molar to the posterior C2. There was no statistically significant difference for the ROM between the young- and the middle-aged groups. The intra-observer reliability for new radiographic index was good. The inter-observer reliability for the ROM measured by the hard palate was low, but was better than that by the molar.ConclusionsROM measured by the hard palate might be a useful new radiographic index in cases of occipito-cervical instability
Enhanced Bactericidal Activity of Silver Thin Films Deposited via Aerosol-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition
Silver thin films were deposited on SiO2-barrier-coated float glass, fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass, Activ glass, and TiO2-coated float glass via AACVD using silver nitrate at 350 °C. The films were annealed at 600 °C and analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV/vis/near-IR spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. All the films were crystalline, and the silver was present in its elemental form and of nanometer dimension. The antibacterial activity of these samples was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in the dark and under UV light (365 nm). All Ag-deposited films reduced the numbers of E. coli by 99.9% within 6 h and the numbers of S. aureus by 99.9% within only 2 h. FTO/Ag reduced bacterial numbers of E. coli to below the detection limit after 60 min and caused a 99.9% reduction of S. aureus within only 15 min of UV irradiation. Activ/Ag reduced the numbers of S. aureus by 66.6% after 60 min and TiO2/Ag killed 99.9% of S. aureus within 60 min of UV exposure. More remarkably, we observed a 99.9% reduction in the numbers of E. coli within 6 h and the numbers of S. aureus within 4 h in the dark using our novel TiO2/Ag system
Amplitude Damping for single-qubit System with single-qubit mixed-state Environment
We study a generalized amplitude damping channel when environment is
initially in the single-qubit mixed state. Representing the affine
transformation of the generalized amplitude damping by a three-dimensional
volume, we plot explicitly the volume occupied by the channels simulatable by a
single-qubit mixed-state environment. As expected, this volume is embedded in
the total volume by the channels which is simulated by two-qubit enviroment.
The volume ratio is approximately 0.08 which is much smaller than 3/8, the

Unilateral Pulmonary Edema: A Rare Initial Presentation of Cardiogenic Shock due to Acute Myocardial Infarction
Cardiogenic unilateral pulmonary edema (UPE) is a rare clinical entity that is often misdiagnosed at first. Most cases of cardiogenic UPE occur in the right upper lobe and are caused by severe mitral regurgitation (MR). We present an unusual case of right-sided UPE in a patient with cardiogenic shock due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) without severe MR. The patient was successfully treated by percutaneous coronary intervention and medical therapy for heart failure. Follow-up chest Radiography showed complete resolution of the UPE. This case reminds us that AMI can present as UPE even in patients without severe MR or any preexisting pulmonary disease affecting the vasculature or parenchyma of the lung
Synergistic Antibacterial Effects of Metallic Nanoparticle Combinations
© The Author(s) 2019.Metallic nanoparticles have unique antimicrobial properties that make them suitable for use within medical and pharmaceutical devices to prevent the spread of infection in healthcare. The use of nanoparticles in healthcare is on the increase with silver being used in many devices. However, not all metallic nanoparticles can target and kill all disease-causing bacteria. To overcome this, a combination of several different metallic nanoparticles were used in this study to compare effects of multiple metallic nanoparticles when in combination than when used singly, as single elemental nanoparticles (SENPs), against two common hospital acquired pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas. aeruginosa). Flow cytometry LIVE/DEAD assay was used to determine rates of cell death within a bacterial population when exposed to the nanoparticles. Results were analysed using linear models to compare effectiveness of three different metallic nanoparticles, tungsten carbide (WC), silver (Ag) and copper (Cu), in combination and separately. Results show that when the nanoparticles are placed in combination (NPCs), antimicrobial effects significantly increase than when compared with SENPs (P < 0.01). This study demonstrates that certain metallic nanoparticles can be used in combination to improve the antimicrobial efficiency in destroying morphologically distinct pathogens within the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.Peer reviewe
Discrepant glomerular filtration rate trends from creatinine and cystatin C in patients with chronic kidney disease: results from the KNOW-CKD cohort
Abstract
Background
Serum creatinine (Cr) and cystatin C (CysC) can both be used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFRCr and eGFRCysC). However, certain conditions may cause discrepancies between eGFR trends from Cr and CysC, and these remain undetermined in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Methods
A total of 1069 patients from the Korean CKD cohort (KNOW-CKD), which enrolls pre-dialytic CKD patients, whose Cr and CysC had been followed for more than 4âyears were included in the sample. We performed trajectory analysis using latent class mixed modeling and identified members of the discrepancy group when patient trends between eGFRCr and eGFRCysC differed. Multivariate logistic analyses with Firths penalized likelihood regression models were performed to identify conditions related to the discrepancy.
Results
Trajectory patterns of eGFRCr were classified into three groups: two groups with stable eGFRCr (stable with high eGFRCr and stable with low eGFRCr) and one group with decreasing eGFRCr. Trajectory analysis of eGFRCysC also showed similar patterns, comprising two groups with stable eGFRCysC and one group with decreasing eGFRCysC. Patients in the discrepancy group (decreasing eGFRCr but stable & low eGFRCysC; nâ=â55) were younger and had greater proteinuria values than the agreement group (stable & low eGFRCr and eGFRCysC; nâ=â706), differences that remained consistent irrespective of the measurement period (4 or 5âyears).
Conclusions
In the present study, we identify conditions related to discrepant trends of eGFRCr and eGFRCysC. Clinicians should remain aware of such potential discrepancies when tracing both Cr and CysC
