Effects of Nanoparticle Geometry and Size Distribution on Diffusion Impedance of Battery Electrodes

The short diffusion lengths in insertion battery nanoparticles render the capacitive behavior of bounded diffusion, which is rarely observable with conventional larger particles, now accessible to impedance measurements. Coupled with improved geometrical characterization, this presents an opportunity to measure solid diffusion more accurately than the traditional approach of fitting Warburg circuit elements, by properly taking into account the particle geometry and size distribution. We revisit bounded diffusion impedance models and incorporate them into an overall impedance model for different electrode configurations. The theoretical models are then applied to experimental data of a silicon nanowire electrode to show the effects of including the actual nanowire geometry and radius distribution in interpreting the impedance data. From these results, we show that it is essential to account for the particle shape and size distribution to correctly interpret impedance data for battery electrodes. Conversely, it is also possible to solve the inverse problem and use the theoretical "impedance image" to infer the nanoparticle shape and/or size distribution, in some cases, more accurately than by direct image analysis. This capability could be useful, for example, in detecting battery degradation in situ by simple electrical measurements, without the need for any imaging.Comment: 30 page

Proton Spin in Chiral Quark Models

    Get PDF
The spin and flavor fractions of constituent quarks in the proton are obtained from their chiral fluctuations involving Goldstone bosons. SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking suggested by the mass difference between the strange and up, down quarks is included, and this improves the agreement with the data markedly.Comment: 13 pages, 1 table, no figures, LaTex, eta & eta' parts change

Relativistic description of nuclear matrix elements in neutrinoless double-ÎČ\beta decay

Neutrinoless double-ÎČ\beta (0ÎœÎČÎČ0\nu\beta\beta) decay is related to many fundamental concepts in nuclear and particle physics beyond the standard model. Currently there are many experiments searching for this weak process. An accurate knowledge of the nuclear matrix element for the 0ÎœÎČÎČ0\nu\beta\beta decay is essential for determining the effective neutrino mass once this process is eventually measured. We report the first full relativistic description of the 0ÎœÎČÎČ0\nu\beta\beta decay matrix element based on a state-of-the-art nuclear structure model. We adopt the full relativistic transition operators which are derived with the charge-changing nucleonic currents composed of the vector coupling, axial-vector coupling, pseudoscalar coupling, and weak-magnetism coupling terms. The wave functions for the initial and final nuclei are determined by the multireference covariant density functional theory (MR-CDFT) based on the point-coupling functional PC-PK1. The low-energy spectra and electric quadrupole transitions in 150{}^{150}Nd and its daughter nucleus 150{}^{150}Sm are well reproduced by the MR-CDFT calculations. The 0ÎœÎČÎČ0\nu\beta\beta decay matrix elements for both the 01+→01+0_1^+\rightarrow 0_1^+ and 01+→02+0_1^+\rightarrow 0_2^+ decays of 150{}^{150}Nd are evaluated. The effects of particle number projection, static and dynamic deformations, and the full relativistic structure of the transition operators on the matrix elements are studied in detail. The resulting 0ÎœÎČÎČ0\nu\beta\beta decay matrix element for the 01+→01+0_1^+\rightarrow 0_1^+ transition is 5.605.60, which gives the most optimistic prediction for the next generation of experiments searching for the 0ÎœÎČÎČ0\nu\beta\beta decay in 150{}^{150}Nd.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures; table adde

Geometric Phase, Hannay's Angle, and an Exact Action Variable

Canonical structure of a generalized time-periodic harmonic oscillator is studied by finding the exact action variable (invariant). Hannay's angle is defined if closed curves of constant action variables return to the same curves in phase space after a time evolution. The condition for the existence of Hannay's angle turns out to be identical to that for the existence of a complete set of (quasi)periodic wave functions. Hannay's angle is calculated, and it is shown that Berry's relation of semiclassical origin on geometric phase and Hannay's angle is exact for the cases considered.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Diversity gain for DVB-H by using transmitter/receiver cyclic delay diversity

    Get PDF
The objective of this paper is to investigate different diversity techniques for broadcast networks that will minimize the complexity and improve received SNR of broadcast systems. Resultant digital broadcast networks would require fewer transmitter sites and thus be more cost-effective and have less environmental impact. The techniques can be applied to DVB-T, DVB-H and DAB systems that use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multplexing (OFDM). These are key radio broadcast network technologies, which are expected to complement emerging technologies such as WiMAX and future 4G networks for delivery of broadband content. Transmitter and receiver diversity technologies can increase the frequency and time selectivity of the resulting channel transfer function at the receiver. Diversity exploits the statistical nature of fading due to multipath and reduces the likelihood of deep fading by providing a diversity of transmission signals. Multiple signals are transmitted in such a way as to ensure that several signals reach the receiver each with uncorrelated fading. Transmit diversity is more practical than receive diversity due to the difficulty of locating two receive antennas far enough apart in a small mobile device. The schemes examined here comply with existing DVB standards and can be incorporated into existing systems without change. The diversity techniques introduced in this paper are applied to the DVB-H system. Bit error performance investigations were conducted by simulation for different DVB-H and diversity parameters

Quark Orbital Angular Momentum in the Baryon

Analytical and numerical results, for the orbital and spin content carried by different quark flavors in the baryons, are given in the chiral quark model with symmetry breaking. The reduction of the quark spin, due to the spin dilution in the chiral splitting processes, is transferred into the orbital motion of quarks and antiquarks. The orbital angular momentum for each quark flavor in the proton as a function of the partition factor Îș\kappa and the chiral splitting probability aa is shown. The cancellation between the spin and orbital contributions in the spin sum rule and in the baryon magnetic moments is discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures, revised version with minor eq. no and ref. no. corrections.
