tRNA structural and functional changes induced by oxidative stress
Oxidatively damaged biomolecules impair cellular functions and contribute to the pathology of a variety of diseases. RNA is also attacked by reactive oxygen species, and oxidized RNA is increasingly recognized as an important contributor to neurodegenerative complications in humans. Recently, evidence has accumulated supporting the notion that tRNA is involved in cellular responses to various stress conditions. This review focuses on the intriguing consequences of oxidative modification of tRNA at the structural and functional level
Does dietary calcium interact with dietary fiber against colorectal cancer? : a case-control study in Central Europe
BACKGROUND: An unfavorable trend of increasing rates of colorectal cancer has been observed across modern societies. In general, dietary factors are understood to be responsible for up to 70% of the disease’s incidence, though there are still many inconsistencies regarding the impact of specific dietary items. Among the dietary minerals, calcium intake may play a crucial role in the prevention. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of intake of higher levels of dietary calcium on the risk of developing of colorectal cancer, and to evaluate dose dependent effect and to investigate possible effect modification. METHODS: A hospital based case–control study of 1556 patients (703 histologically confirmed colon and rectal incident cases and 853 hospital-based controls) was performed between 2000–2012 in Krakow, Poland. The 148-item semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess dietary habits and level of nutrients intake was used. Data regarding possible covariates was also collected. RESULTS: After adjustment for age, gender, education, consumption of fruits, raw and cooked vegetables, fish, and alcohol, as well as for intake of fiber, vitamin C, dietary iron, lifetime recreational physical activity, BMI, smoking status, and taking mineral supplements, an increase in the consumption of calcium was associated with the decrease of colon cancer risk (OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.89-0.98 for every 100 mg Ca/day increase). Subjects consumed >1000 mg/day showed 46% decrease of colon cancer risk (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.35-0.83). The effect of dietary calcium was modified by dietary fiber (p for interaction =0.015). Finally, consistent decrease of colon cancer risk was observed across increasing levels of dietary calcium and fiber intake. These relationships were not proved for rectal cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The study confirmed the effect of high doses of dietary calcium against the risk of colon cancer development. This relationship was observed across different levels of dietary fiber, and the beneficial effect of dietary calcium depended on the level of dietary fiber suggesting modification effect of calcium and fiber. Further efforts are needed to confirm this association, and also across higher levels of dietary fiber intake
Lipnica Murowana - rural structure and landscape
Lipnica Murowana prawa miejskie uzyskała w XIV w. Do czasów współczesnych zachowała lokacyjny układ przestrzenny. Korzystne położenie, bogactwa naturalne oraz dobra organizacja i polityka gospodarcza sprzyjały jej rozwojowi i społeczności. Walorami miasteczka są: duży rynek z oryginalną zabudową pierzei XVIII/XIX-wiecznymi kamieniczkami z podcieniami i cały krajobraz osiedleńczy wraz z cennymi obiektami zabytkowymi.
Programme guidelines on the pro-ecological policy of rural areas development
Obecnie jest realizowany tzw. szósty Program Działania w dziedzinie
ochrony środowiska obejmujący lata 2001–2010. Jest kontynuacją wcześniej
przyjętego programu, którego zasadą jest zrównoważony rozwój. Zapewnia on
…”zaspokojenie wszystkich potrzeb rozwojowych i konsumpcyjnych społeczeństw
Dotyczy
to sektorów gospodarczych szczególnego oddziaływania takich jak przemysł
energetyka, transport, rolnictwo i turystyka. The principles of the European Union’s programme for developing rural
areas aim at: increasing the productivity of agriculture; providing agricultural
people with a proper standard and level of living; stabilizing agricultural and food
product markets. To achieve those targets and goals, special legal, marketing,
supportive and financial tools are applied. The pro-ecological trend in the development
of rural areas presses us into improving the conditions and state of our
natural environment through the elimination of unfavourable phenomena. One of the measures is to support ecological (also known as organic) agriculture because
its potential, as well as the continuously growing demand for organic food products
are not sufficiently utilized so far; thus the promotion of ecological agriculture
should absolutely be a priority.
Poland’s access to EU stimulated the realization of those basic principles
of the UE programme, which refer to the development of agriculture. The principles
in question assumed that measures and activities focused on some key objectives
should be jointly financed. Those objectives are as follows:
– improving natural environment through the elimination of unfavourable
phenomena, protecting & preserving culture and nature-landscape values, as well
as motivating & stimulating the development of retarded regions;
– making the policy of economic development, accomplished by local communities,
more flexible, i.e. decentralizing and localizing the policies of economic
development according to the rule „thinking globally, but acting locally”;
– elaborating a uniform regional development plan for each individual
region, with local financial resources to be incorporated into such a plan, and
evaluating the anticipated economic profits resulting from the implementation and
the realization of such a plan.
Presently, the sixth Plan of Activities is under realization; it refers to the
protection of environment and covers a period from 2001 to 2010. This Plan is a
continuation of a former plan that was based on and managed by the principle of
sustainable development. The sustainable development. This former Plan provides
and ensures ”that all the developmental and consumption needs of societies are
met, and it can be carried out without the functioning of natural environment, in
which societies live, is deteriorated” [Nowak - Far 2002 s. 239]. This refers, in
particular, to those sectors of the national economy, which have very specific and
high impact such as industry including heavy power industry, transport, agriculture,
and tourism.
The execution of the assumptions as pointed out above, and the execution of
the subsequent arrangements aim at achieving and securing stability and balance
in the natural environment, as well as at ensuring durability of the key natural
processes through the fully integrated political, social, and economic activities.
The statements and arrangements provided in spatial management plans are
designed for those objectives including their completion. In addition, the proecological
policy of sustainable development of rural areas guarantees that all the
vital needs of the contemporary and future generations be satisfied
Cracow Jozef Pilsudski Mound in spatial structure and landscape
przedstawienie takich obiektów terenowych w strukturze przestrzennej
i w krajobrazie kulturowym Polski. Te wielkogabarytowe, ziemne budowle inżynierskie
są sztucznie usypanymi bryłami geometrycznymi. Duże i wysokie lokowane
punktami widokowymi, mniejsze zaliczamy do małych form strukturalnych.
wzgórzu Sowiniec w Lesie Wolskim w Krakowie. O wyborze obiektu opracowania
Kopiec noszący trzy nazwy Kopiec Wolności, Kopiec Piłsudskiego i Mogiła
Mogił jest jednym z czterech największych krakowskich ziemnych monumentów.
Jest też najmłodszym, bo wzniesionym w okresie międzywojennym
ubiegłego wieku.
Kopiec jest obiektem architektonicznym, dlatego przed przystąpieniem do
prac budowlanych wykonano szczegółowy projekt. Jednym z założeniem była jego
trwałość, dlatego zadbano by podczas jego sypania były zachowane wszelkie
wymogi i prawidła sztuki inżynierskiej zapewniające budowli solidność i statyczność.
Planem objęto formowanie bryły, system odwodnienia wewnętrznego i zewnętrznego,
przygotowanie podstawy i dostaw budulca w skład, którego wchodził
dochodziła do 10 tysięcy osób dziennie). [Kopce krakowskie 2005].
Z czasu budowy zachowała się bogata dokumentacja w zbiorach archiwalnych
i prywatnych.
sytuacja krajobrazowa.
Zestawiając chronologicznie zachowaną dokumentację fotograficzną możemy
porównać współczesny wizerunek obiektu wraz z otoczeniem z wizerunkiem
z przed 70 lat. Prześledzić i wizualnie ocenić skutki niszczącej działalności
człowieka i sił przyrody, którym Kopiec ulegał w swojej historii. Ocenić przeobrażenia
przestrzenne i krajobrazowe zachodzące na poszczególnych etapach
prac renowacyjnych.
i przyjezdnych.
Prowadzą do niego liczne leśne ścieżki.
Celem zaprezentowania
Kopca Józefa Piłsudskiego w krajobrazie został wykonany serwis fotograficzny,
który posłużył przedstawieniu efektów wizualnych wynikających ze
zmienności, czyli pojawów krajobrazu. The objective of his paper is to represent, based on the example of one of
the Cracow mounds, those land objects within a spatial structure and Poland’s
cultural landscape. Those large engineering earthen structures are artificially
raised geometric bodies. The large and high moulds located on ground elevations
constitute architectural dominants and are beauty spots, whereas the smaller ones
are classified as small structural forms.
For the purpose of this paper, the Józef Piłsudski Mound was chosen as an
example. It is situated on the Sowiniec Hill in the ‘Wolski Wood’ Park (in Polish
‘Las Wolski’) in Cracow. This object was selected owing to the fact that, recently,
Poland celebrated the 90th anniversary of regaining its independence and Marshall
Józef Piłsudski rendered considerable service to the independence fight and
had strong ties with Cracow.
This Mound having three names: The Independence Mound, The Piłsudski
Mound, and The Grave of Graves is one of the Cracow four largest earthen
monuments. It is also the youngest mould since it was built during the inter-war
period in the twentieth century. The Mound is an architectural object. Thus, prior
to beginning with the building works, a detailed design was developed. One of the
considerations was the durability of the Mound, so, in order to ensure the solidity
and stability of the structure, the emphasis was put on obeying the standards and
rules of engineering while raising the mound. The detailed work plan comprised
forming the body, constructing a system of internal and external drainage, preparing the base and the delivery of building materials consisting of sand with
gravel and loam admixture. Furthermore, the broad front of works was established,
as was the works base for volunteers participating in raising the Mound
(there were almost 10 thousand people working at the site every day) [The Cracow
Mounds 2005].
Abundant documentary evidence from the period of raising the Mound has
been maintained in public and private archival sources. Photographs and postcards
from this time allow the tracing of the process of great spatial and landscape
transformations around the Sowiniec Hill. The construction of this object on
a relatively small area lasted three years. Upon its completion, in the open landscape
of glade with a wall of wood in the background, a highlighted landscape
situation was formed.
Based on the chronologically compiled photographic evidence, it is possible
to compare the contemporary view of the object and its surroundings and their
view from 70 years ago. It is also possible to track and visually assess the results
of the destructive activities of man and natural forces upon the Piłsudski Mound
during its existence, as well as to evaluate changes in the space and landscape occurring
in each phase of the renovation works.
The Józef Piłsudski Mound is in one of the glades in the ‘Wolski Wood’
Park. The Park has an area of 442 ha and is part of the Bielańsko-Tyniecki Landscape
Park. It constitutes a larger part of the natural woodland vegetation remnant.
It is a place to rest and a district in Cracow, which is the most frequently
visited by Cracow inhabitants and visitors. The Mound and the Marshall’s Monument
at the same time, located in the region of outstanding natural values and
landscape amenities, enjoys the greatest popularity for it also has a great educational
significance; it is the most valuable symbol of the Poland’s independence.
There are numerous forest paths leading to it. Everybody, who enters the
glade and encounters this huge monument, experiences strong aesthetic feelings,
especially as this monument appears differently depending on the season, time of
the day, and the weather conditions. For the purpose of showing the Józef Piłsudski
Mound against the landscape, a series of photographs was made and served to
show visual effects resulting from the changeability of landscape, i.e. of the landscape’s
appearance
Cellar Mountain in Pierzchnica in spatial structure and landscape
Pierzchnica leży w powiecie kieleckim. Znajduje się na wschód od drogi
nr 73 na odcinku Kielce-Chmielnik-Busko Zdrój. Jest lokalnym ośrodkiem administracyjnym
o statusie gminy wiejskiej. Miejscowość ta, mimo utraty w XIX w.
praw miejskich, zachowała cechy małego miasteczka. Przedmiotem opracowania
jest strefa magazynowa zwana Górą Piwniczną. Na jej obszarze znajduje się zespół
ponad osiemdziesięciu piwnic prawdopodobnie z przełomu XVIII/XIX w.
Te bliźniaczopodobne obiekty budowano sukcesywnie, w miarę powiększania się
liczby mieszkańców miasta. Zwyczajowo jedna piwnica przypadała każdemu
z właścicieli posesji. Do dziś zachował się ten unikalny, zabytkowy zespół, którego
właścicielami i użytkownikami są mieszkańcy Pierzchnicy. Niewielka część
obiektów jest wykorzystywana gospodarczo, pozostałe niszczeją.Pierzchnica village is situated in the Kielce county. It lies east of No.73
road within the Kielce-Chmielnik-Busko Zdrój section. At present it is a local administrative
unit with rural municipality status. The locality lost its town rights
and was degraded to the village status, but still retained the features testifying its
character of a small town. The paper describes the storage zone called the Cellar
Mountain. A complex of over eighty century cellars is situated in this area. These
identical objects were constructed successively with growing number of the town
inhabitants. Customarily one cellar fell to each of the property owners. The owners
and users of this unique, ancient cellar complex which has been preserved to this day, are the inhabitants of Pierzchnica village. Some of the preserved objects
are still used for storage, the other are going to ruin
Zasobność podłoża zastosowanego do pędzenia poprawia także jakość uzyskanych w pędzeniu kwiatów ciętych (długość pędu kwiatowego i masę kwiatów ciętych), zwłaszcza jeśli cebule zgromadziły niedostateczne ilości składników pokarmowych podczas uprawy polowej. The influence of environmental conditions during bulbs production of tulips ‘Yokohama’ and ‘Leen van der Mark’ on nutrient content in bulbs and flowering of plants forced in different media were evaluated. The obtained results showed the positive correlation between the nutrient content in bulbs and quality of obtained cut flowers. Also the fertility of forcing medium improved the quality of cut flowers (length of flower stem and weight of cut flower), particularly when bulbs accumulated insufficient amount of nutrients during field cultivation
