First, the institutions of mass education have spread to virtually all countries despite vast differences in political, economic, social, and cultural organization. Second, rates of enrollment around the world are high and represent enormous financial investments by many impoverished states and economies.1 And, third, the rapidity of educational expansion across states was unanticipated, its speed catching by surprise both theorists and practitioners alike

    The university administrator, preacher and poet Zachary Boyd (1585–1653) relied heavily on epithets and similes borrowed from Josuah Sylvester's poetry when composing his scriptural versifications Zion's Flowers(c. 1640?). The composition of Boyd's adaptation of Daniel 3, Nebuchadnezzars Fierie Furnace, provides an unusually lucid example of the reading and imitation practices of a mid-seventeenth-century Scottish Presbyterian in the years preceding civil war. This article begins by re-considering a manuscript transcription of Fierie Furnace held at the British Library previously described as an anonymous playtext from the early 1610s, then establishes the nature of Boyd's reliance on Sylvester by analyzing holograph manuscripts held at Glasgow University Library, a sermon Boyd wrote on the same theme, and the copy of Sylvester's Devine Weekes, and Workes that Boyd probably used.Arts and Humanities Research Counci

    Weld repair of directionally solidified articles

    A directionally solidified nickel-base superalloy article has a defect therein extending parallel to the solidification direction. The article is repaired by removing any foreign matter present in the defect, and then heating the article to a repair temperature of from about 60 to about 98 percent of the solidus temperature of the base material in a chamber containing a protective gas that inhibits oxidation of the base material. The defect is filled with a filler metal while maintaining the article at the repair temperature. The filling is accomplished by providing a source of the filler metal of substantially the same composition as the base material of the directionally solidified article, and melting the filler metal into the defect progressively while moving the source of the filler metal relative to the article in a direction parallel to the solidification direction. Optionally, additional artificial heat extraction is accomplished in a heat-flow direction that is within about 45 degrees of the solidification direction, as the filler metal solidifies within the defect.     Welding of gamma titanium aluminide alloys

    An article made of a gamma titanium aluminide alloy is welded, as for example in the weld repair of surface cracks, by removing foreign matter from the area to be welded, first stress relieving the article, cooling the entire article to a welding temperature of from about 1000.degree. F. to about 1400.degree. F., welding a preselected region in an inert atmosphere at the welding temperature, and second stress relieving the article. Welding is preferably accomplished by striking an arc in the preselected region so as to locally melt the alloy in the preselected region, providing a filler metal having the same composition as the gamma titanium aluminide alloy of the article, and feeding the filler metal into the arc so that the filler metal is melted and fused with the article to form a weldment upon solidification

    An article is welded, as in weld repair of a defect, by positioning a weld lift-off block at a location on the surface of the article adjacent to the intended location of the end of the weldment on the surface of the article. The weld lift-off block has a wedge shape including a base contacting the surface of the article, and an upper face angled upwardly from the base from a base leading edge. A weld pool is formed on the surface of the article by directly heating the surface of the article using a heat source. The heat source is moved relative to the surface of the article and onto the upper surface of the weld lift-off block by crossing the leading edge of the wedge, without discontinuing the direct heating of the article by the heat source. The heating of the article with the heat source is discontinued only after the heat source is directly heating the upper face of the weld lift-off block, and not the article

    The Effects of Background Pressure on SPT-140 Thruster Performance at Multiple Power Levels

    NASA's planned Psyche mission is scheduled to launch in 2022 and begin a 3.5-year cruise to the metallic asteroid Psyche, where it would examine this unique body. The baseline spacecraft design is a hybrid of JPL's deep-space heritage subsystems with commercial partner SSL's power, structure, and SPT-140 electric propulsion subsystems. Since the deep-space implementation of the SPT-140 differs from the commercial implementation, primarily in the need for deep power throttling, characterization of the system at lower powers is necessary. One specific area of interest is the sensitivity of thruster performance to background pressure in ground-based test facilities, which can have an impact on the prediction of in-space performance. Measurements of this pressure dependence were performed on a qualification-model SPT-140 thruster over the 0.9-4.5 kW range of interest for the Psyche mission. Thrust sensitivity to pressure, in an absolute sense, was largest at 4.5 kW and decreased with power until there was little-to-no measurable effect at 0.9 kW. In a relative sense, thrust sensitivity was similar at all powers above 0.9 kW with about 2-4% higher thrust measured at 10 Torr than at the lowest operating pressure. Thruster stability margin, examined as a function of magnet current, did not have a strong dependence on facility pressure. Finally, an investigation of low-power operation at the lowest facility pressure showed that a combination of added cathode keeper current and additional cathode propellant flow significantly mitigated the larger negative cathode-to-ground voltages that were observed. These test results, combined with thruster life test results, inform the selection of proper low-power operating conditions for Psyche
