    Crystalline silicon solar power modules are examined for reliability and cost effectiveness. A goal of 12% solar energy conversion efficiency is considered feasible at a cost of 12/kWh, and a decision is made to limit consideration to float zone silicon wafer and dendritic web silicone modules. A preliminary module packaging configuration of glass/ethylene vinyl acetate/plastic film is selected. Anticipated module efficiency levels are 12.6% at 25 C and 11.5% at NOCT (Nominal Operating Cell Temperature)

    The Flat-Plate Solar Array (FSA) Project, funded by the U.S. Government and managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was formed in 1975 to develop the module/array technology needed to attain widespread terrestrial use of photovoltaics by 1985. To accomplish this, the FSA Project established and managed an Industry, University, and Federal Government Team to perform the needed research and development. This volume of the series of final reports documenting the FSA Project deals with the Project's activities directed at developing the engineering technology base required to achieve modules that meet the functional, safety and reliability requirements of large-scale terrestrial photovoltaic systems applications. These activities included: (1) development of functional, safety, and reliability requirements for such applications; (2) development of the engineering analytical approaches, test techniques, and design solutions required to meet the requirements; (3) synthesis and procurement of candidate designs for test and evaluation; and (4) performance of extensive testing, evaluation, and failure analysis to define design shortfalls and, thus, areas requiring additional research and development. During the life of the FSA Project, these activities were known by and included a variety of evolving organizational titles: Design and Test, Large-Scale Procurements, Engineering, Engineering Sciences, Operations, Module Performance and Failure Analysis, and at the end of the Project, Reliability and Engineering Sciences. This volume provides both a summary of the approach and technical outcome of these activities and provides a complete Bibliography (Appendix A) of the published documentation covering the detailed accomplishments and technologies developed

    Assuming a linear relationship between the stratosphere loading of NOx and the magnitude of the ozone perturbation, the change in ozone expected to result from space shuttle ejection of N2O4 was calculated based on the ozone change that is predicted for the (much greater) NOx input that would accompany large-scale operations of SSTs. Stratospheric fluorine reactions were critically reviewed to evaluate the magnitude of fluorine induced ozone destruction relative to the reduction that would be caused by addition of an equal amount of chlorine. The predicted effect on stratospheric ozone is vanishingly small

    The human health effects of exposure to polybrominated biphenyls

    Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) were inadvertently introduced into the food chain in Michigan in 1973. Fifty-one people with known exposure to PBB were studied. Twenty-three farmers with disabling health complaints, and 28 chemical workers involved in the PBB manufacturing process were systematically evaluated to determine if these highrisk groups suffered adverse effects from their known exposure to PBB. The farmers had a high frequency of constitutional symptoms, hepatomegaly and skin rashes, findings not commonly noted in the chemical workers. Biochemical and hematologic testing revealed few abnormalities, and electromyograms, nerve conduction velocities, endocrine studies, and lymphocyte transformation studies provided no objective findings that correlated with subjective complaints. There was no relationship between PBB levels and physical or laboratory abnormalities. Present evidence suggests that people exposed to PBB have few objective findings at this time, and reactive depression may be responsible for the high prevalence of constitutional symptoms.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24421/1/0000692.pd
