    Response shifts in mental health interventions: An illustration of longitudinal measurement invariance.

    The efficacy of treatments for depression is often measured by comparing observed total scores on self-report inventories, in both clinical practice and research. However, the occurrence of response shifts (changes in subjects' values, or their standards for measurement) may limit the validity of such comparisons. As most psychological treatments for depression are aimed at changing patients' values and frame of reference, response shifts are likely to occur over the course of such treatments. In this article, we tested whether response shifts occurred over the course of treatment in an influential randomized clinical trial. Using confirmatory factor analysis, measurement models underlying item scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck & Beamesderfer, 1974) of the National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program (Elkin, Parloff, Hadley, & Autry, 1985) were analyzed. Compared with before treatment, after-treatment item scores appeared to overestimate depressive symptomatology, measurement errors were smaller, and correlations between constructs were stronger. These findings indicate a response shift, in the sense that participants seem to get better at assessing their level of depressive symptomatology. Comparing measurement models of patients receiving psychotherapy and medication suggested that the aforementioned effects were more apparent in the psychotherapy groups. Consequently, comparisons of observed total scores on self-report inventories may yield confounded measures of treatment efficacy. © 2013 American Psychological Association

    Wall-bounded turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers: Recent advances and key issues

    Wall-bounded turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers have become an increasingly active area of research in recent years. Many challenges remain in theory, scaling, physical understanding, experimental techniques, and numerical simulations. In this paper we distill the salient advances of recent origin, particularly those that challenge textbook orthodoxy. Some of the outstanding questions, such as the extent of the logarithmic overlap layer, the universality or otherwise of the principal model parameters such as the von Kármán “constant,” the parametrization of roughness effects, and the scaling of mean flow and Reynolds stresses, are highlighted. Research avenues that may provide answers to these questions, notably the improvement of measuring techniques and the construction of new facilities, are identified. We also highlight aspects where differences of opinion persist, with the expectation that this discussion might mark the beginning of their resolution

    The expanding bipolar shell of the helium nova V445 Puppis

    From multi-epoch adaptive optics imaging and integral field unit spectroscopy, we report the discovery of an expanding and narrowly confined bipolar shell surrounding the helium nova V445 Puppis (Nova Puppis 2000). An equatorial dust disc obscures the nova remnant, and the outflow is characterized by a large polar outflow velocity of 6720 +/- 650 km s(-1) and knots moving at even larger velocities of 8450 +/- 570 km s(-1). We derive an expansion parallax distance of 8.2 +/- 0.5 kpc and deduce a pre-outburst luminosity of the underlying binary of log L/L-circle dot = 4.34 +/- 0.36. The derived luminosity suggests that V445 Puppis probably contains a massive white dwarf accreting at high rate from a helium star companion making it part of a population of binary stars that potentially lead to supernova Ia explosions due to accumulation of helium-rich material on the surface of a massive white dwarf

    The He abundance in the metal-deficient blue compact dwarf galaxies Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65

    We present high-quality Keck telescope spectroscopic observations of the two metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65. These data are used to derive the heavy-element and helium abundances. We find that the oxygen abundances in Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65 are the same, 12+logO/H=7.54+/-0.01, or Zsun/24, despite the different ionization conditions in these galaxies. The nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratio in both galaxies is logN/O=-1.64+/-0.02 and lies in the narrow range found for the other most metal-deficient BCDs. We use the five strongest HeI emission lines 3889, 4471, 5876, 6678 and 7065, to correct self-consistently their intensities for collisional and fluorescent enhancement mechanisms and to derive the He abundance. Underlying stellar absorption is found to be important for the HeI 4471 emission line in both galaxies, being larger in Tol 65. The weighted He mass fractions in Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65 are respectively Y=0.2458+/-0.0039 and 0.2410+/-0.0050 when the three HeI emission lines, 4471, 5876 and 6678, are used, and are, respectively, 0.2466+/-0.0043 and 0.2463+/-0.0057 when the HeI 4471 emission line is excluded. These values are in very good agreement with recent measurements of the He mass fraction in others of the most metal-deficient BCDs by Izotov and coworkers. We find that the combined effect of the systematic uncertainties due to the underlying HeI stellar absorption lines, ionization and temperature structure of the HII region and collisional excitation of the hydrogen emission lines is likely small, not exceeding ~2% (the error is 2sigma).     The Dutch Symptom Checklist-90-Revised:Is the Use of the Subscales Justified?

    The Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R; Derogatis, 1977, 1994) was constructed to measure both general psychological distress and specific primary symptoms of distress. In this study, we evaluated to what extent the scale scores of the Dutch SCL-90-R reflect general and/or specific aspects of psychological distress in a psychiatric outpatients sample (N = 1,842), using a hierarchical factor model. The results revealed that the total scale score measures general psychological distress, with high reliability. The subscale scores Sleep Difficulties, Agoraphobia, Hostility, and Somatization reflect the specific primary symptoms reasonably well, with high reliability. The subscale score Depression hardly measures specific symptoms of distress, but instead a very common construct as is measured with the total scale of the SCL-90-R. The use of the Depression subscale score beyond the total scale score of the SCL-90-R appears therefore of limited value in clinical practice

    Helium abundance in the most metal-deficient blue compact galaxies: I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052

    We present high-quality spectroscopic observations of the two most-metal deficient blue compact galaxies known, I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052 to determine the helium abundance. The underlying stellar absorption strongly influences the observed intensities of He I emission lines in the brightest NW component of I Zw 18, and hence this component should not be used for primordial He abundance determination. The effect of underlying stellar absorption, though present, is much smaller in the SE component. Assuming all systematic uncertainties are negligible, the He mass fraction derived in this component is Y = 0.243+/-0.007. The high signal-to-noise ratio spectrum (> 100 in the continuum) of SBS 0335-052 allows us to measure the helium mass fraction with a precision better than 2% -- 5% in nine different regions along the slit. Assuming all systematic uncertainties are negligible, the weighted mean He mass fraction in SBS 0335-052 is Y = 0.2437+/-0.0014 when the three He I 4471, 5876 and 6678 emission lines are used, and is 0.2463+/-0.0015 when the He I 4471 emission line is excluded. The weighted mean helium mass fraction in the two most metal-deficient BCGs I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052, Y=0.2462+/-0.0015, after correction for the stellar He production results in a primordial He mass fraction Yp = 0.2452+/-0.0015. The derived Yp leads to a baryon-to-photon ratio of (4.7+/-1.0) 10^{-10}, consistent with the values derived from the primordial D and 7Li abundances, and supporting the standard big bang nucleosynthesis theory. For the most consistent set of primordial D, 4He, and 7Li abundances we derive an equivalent number of light neutrino species 3.0+/-0.3 (95% C.L.).Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. To appear in Ap

    I present empirical evidence that turbulent flows are closely analogous to critical phenomena, from a reanalysis of friction factor measurements in rough pipes. The data collapse found here corresponds to Widom scaling near critical points, and implies that a full understanding of turbulence requires explicit accounting for boundary roughness

    Radio Emission from GRO J1655-40 during the 1994 Jet Ejection Episodes

    We report multifrequency radio observations of GRO J1655-40 obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope and the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory at the time of the major hard X-ray and radio outbursts in 1994 August-September. The radio emission reached levels of the order of a few Jy and was found to be linearly polarized by up to 10%, indicating a synchrotron origin. The light curves are in good agreement with those measured with the VLA, but our closer time sampling has revealed two new short-lived events and significant deviations from a simple exponential decay. The polarization data show that the magnetic field is well ordered and aligned at right angles to the radio jets for most of the monitoring period. The time evolution of the polarization cannot be explained solely in terms of a simple synchrotron bubble model, and we invoke a hybrid `core-lobe' model with a core which contributes both synchrotron and free-free emission and `lobes' which are classical synchrotron emitters.Comment: 36 pages, 5 tables, 9 figures; accepted for publication in Ap

    Obtaining accurate mean velocity measurements in high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layers using Pitot tubes

    This article reports on one component of a larger study on measurement of the zero-pressure-gradient turbulent flat plate boundary layer, in which a detailed investigation was conducted of the suite of corrections required for mean velocity measurements performed using Pitot tubes. In particular, the corrections for velocity shear across the tube and for blockage effects which occur when the tube is in close proximity to the wall were investigated using measurements from Pitot tubes of five different diameters, in two different facilities, and at five different Reynolds numbers ranging from Re_θ = 11 100 to 67 000. Only small differences were found amongst commonly used corrections for velocity shear, but improvements were found for existing near-wall proximity corrections. Corrections for the nonlinear averaging of the velocity fluctuations were also investigated, and the results compared to hot-wire data taken as part of the same measurement campaign. The streamwise turbulence-intensity correction was found to be of comparable magnitude to that of the shear correction, and found to bring the hot-wire and Pitot results into closer agreement when applied to the data, along with the other corrections discussed and refined here
