The chemistry of Venus' atmosphere
A model for the Venus atmosphere involving photochemistry of oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine and sulfur species is presented. Sulfur reaction schemes and hydrogen and chlorine reaction schemes were included. The impact of sulfur on the oxygen budget and the subsequent production of H2SO4 molecules for the Venus cloud deck were explored. A major new reaction scheme for production of H2SO4 molecules involving sulfur and oxygen chemistry was established shown to dominate over the odd hydrogen scheme proposed earlier. The efficiency of the scheme in formation of H2SO4 is only about 50%, with the remaining sulfur residing in SO2 molecules. The calculated downward flux of H2SO4 may be sufficient to maintain a steady state sulfuric acid cloud if the resident time of H2SO4 droplets in the cloud is as long as a few years. If however, the resident time is half a year or shorter, additional chemistry capable of more efficient conversion of SO2 to SO3 is required

Topological phases in a two-dimensional lattice: Magnetic field versus spin-orbit coupling
In this work, we explore the rich variety of topological states that arise in
two-dimensional systems, by considering the competing effects of spin-orbit
couplings and a perpendicular magnetic field on a honeycomb lattice. Unlike
earlier approaches, we investigate minimal models in order to clarify the
effects of the intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings, and also of the
Zeeman splitting, on the quantum Hall states generated by the magnetic field.
In this sense, our work provides an interesting path connecting quantum Hall
and quantum spin Hall physics. First, we consider the properties of each term
individually and we analyze their similarities and differences. Secondly, we
investigate the subtle competitions that arise when these effects are combined.
We finally explore the various possible experimental realizations of our model.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figure
Dielectric breakdown induced by picosecond laser pulses
The damage thresholds of transparent optical materials were investigated. Single picosecond pulses at 1.06 microns, 0.53 microns and 0.35 microns were obtained from a mode locked Nd-YAG oscillator-amplifier-frequency multiplier system. The pulses were Gaussian in space and time and permitted the determination of breakdown thresholds with a reproducibility of 15%. It was shown that the breakdown thresholds are characteristic of the bulk material, which included nine alkali halides, five different laser host materials, KDP, quartz, sapphire and calcium fluoride. The extension of the damage data to the ultraviolet is significant, because some indication was obtained that two- and three-photon absorption processes begin to play a role in determining the threshold. Throughout the visible region of the spectrum the threshold is still an increasing function of frequency, indicating that avalanche ionization is the dominant factor in determining the breakdown threshold. This was confirmed by a detailed study of the damage morphology with a high resolution microscope just above the threshold.
