Rock drumming enhances motor and psychosocial skills of children with emotional and behavioral difficulties
Drumming may have therapeutic and learning benefits but there exists little causal evidence regarding the benefits for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD) such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Six EBD pupils (EBD Drum) and 6 peers (Peer Drum) were given 2, 30 minute rock drumming lessons per week, over 5 weeks. Six matched individuals received no drumming instruction (3=EBD Control; 3=Peer Control). An exploratory, mixed-methods analysis was used to explore quantitative changes in skills and qualitative perspectives of the teaching staff. All pupils were tested two times (pretest and posttest) on drumming ability and Motor skills (Movement Assessment Battery for Children, version 2). Teacher’s rating of social behaviour (Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire; SDQ) was tested two times (pretest and retention).Significant differences in total SDQ difficulties between the four groups (χ2(3) = 8.210, p = 0.042) and the hyperactivity subscale (χ2(3) = 10.641, p = 0.014) were observed. The EBD Drum group had greater reductions in total difficulties compared to the Peer Drum (p = 0.009) group and specifically greater reductions in hyperactivity compared to Peer Drum (p = 0.046) and the EBD Control (p = 0.006) group. In follow-up interviews, staff spoke positively about changes in pupil’s attitudes towards learning and social confidence. The positive changes to social and behavioural skills reported in this pilot study are similar to those recorded for other music modalities
NuSTAR hard X-ray observation of a sub-A class solar flare
We report a NuSTAR observation of a solar microflare, SOL2015-09-01T04.
Although it was too faint to be observed by the GOES X-ray Sensor, we estimate
the event to be an A0.1 class flare in brightness. This microflare, with only 5
counts per second per detector observed by RHESSI, is fainter than any hard
X-ray (HXR) flare in the existing literature. The microflare occurred during a
solar pointing by the highly sensitive NuSTAR astrophysical observatory, which
used its direct focusing optics to produce detailed HXR microflare spectra and
images. The microflare exhibits HXR properties commonly observed in larger
flares, including a fast rise and more gradual decay, earlier peak time with
higher energy, spatial dimensions similar to the RHESSI microflares, and a
high-energy excess beyond an isothermal spectral component during the impulsive
phase. The microflare is small in emission measure, temperature, and energy,
though not in physical size; observations are consistent with an origin via the
interaction of at least two magnetic loops. We estimate the increase in thermal
energy at the time of the microflare to be 2.4x10^27 ergs. The observation
suggests that flares do indeed scale down to extremely small energies and

Microflare Heating of a Solar Active Region Observed with NuSTAR, Hinode/XRT, and SDO/AIA
NuSTAR is a highly sensitive focusing hard X-ray (HXR) telescope and has
observed several small microflares in its initial solar pointings. In this
paper, we present the first joint observation of a microflare with NuSTAR and
Hinode/XRT on 2015 April 29 at ~11:29 UT. This microflare shows heating of
material to several million Kelvin, observed in Soft X-rays (SXRs) with
Hinode/XRT, and was faintly visible in Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) with SDO/AIA.
For three of the four NuSTAR observations of this region (pre-, decay, and post
phases) the spectrum is well fitted by a single thermal model of 3.2-3.5 MK,
but the spectrum during the impulsive phase shows additional emission up to 10
MK, emission equivalent to A0.1 GOES class. We recover the differential
emission measure (DEM) using SDO/AIA, Hinode/XRT, and NuSTAR, giving
unprecedented coverage in temperature. We find the pre-flare DEM peaks at ~3 MK
and falls off sharply by 5 MK; but during the microflare's impulsive phase the
emission above 3 MK is brighter and extends to 10 MK, giving a heating rate of
about erg s. As the NuSTAR spectrum is purely
thermal we determined upper-limits on the possible non-thermal bremsstrahlung
emission. We find that for the accelerated electrons to be the source of the
heating requires a power-law spectrum of with a low energy
cut-off keV. In summary, this first NuSTAR microflare

Heart Rate Response during Treadmill Running in Adidas _1 DLX Computerized Running Shoes at Various Shoe Settings
Advisor: David S. SenchinaBACKGROUND: Runners encounter a wide variety of terrains of varying hardness which can be
modified by midsole cushioning. Cushioned shoes are recommended for athletes to decrease impact forces. The adidas_1 DLXTM shoe is advertised as being able to provide appropriate cushioning levels for different athletes on different terrains. PURPOSE: The purpose of the experiment was to investigate
the effects of a commercially available computerized running shoe (adidas_l DLXTM) on heart rate and feelings of foot comfort. The data collected will be used to validate or refute some of the manufacturer's claims, and make recommendations to consumers about these types of shoes. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that the different settings on the adidas_l DLXTM shoe would influence heart rate and subjective foot comfort ratings. METHODS: Nine males (23 ± 3.6 yrs) ran 4 10-minute trials on a treadmill at a fixed speed, once in their own self-selected shoes and three times in
the adidas_1 DLXTM shoes at automatic, manual hard, or manual soft settings. Heart rate was measured at 5, 7.5, and 10 minutes. Foot comfort was measured immediately after each trial. RESULTS: Shoe comfort ratings for all adidas_1 DLXTM settings were approximately 30% lower compared to self-selected shoes. There was no statistically-significant difference in heart rate between the trials. CONCLUSIONS: Mid-sole cushioning influences the comfort felt by runners. The data showed no

Attitudes Toward Breast Cancer Genetic Testing in Five Special Population Groups
Purpose: This study examined interest in and attitudes toward genetic testing in 5 different population groups.
Methods: The survey included African American, Asian American, Latina, Native American, and Appalachian women with varying familial histories of breast cancer. A total of 49 women were interviewed in person. Descriptive and nonparametric statistical techniques were used to assess ethnic group differences.
Results: Overall, interest in testing was high. All groups endorsed more benefits than risks. There were group differences regarding endorsement of specific benefits and risks: testing to “follow doctor recommendations” (p=0.017), “concern for effects on family” (p=0.044), “distrust of modern medicine” (p=0.036), “cost” (p=0.025), and “concerns about communication of results to others” (p=0.032). Conclusion: Cost may be an important barrier to obtaining genetic testing services, and participants would benefit by genetic counseling that incorporates the unique cultural values and beliefs of each group to create an individualized, culturally competent program. Further research about attitudes toward genetic testing is needed among Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Appalachians for whom data are severely lacking. Future study of the different Latina perceptions toward genetic testing are encouraged
A Binary Millisecond Pulsar in Globular Cluster NGC6544
We report the detection of a new 3.06 ms binary pulsar in the globular
cluster NGC6544 using a Fourier-domain ``acceleration'' search. With an implied
companion mass of ~0.01 solar masses and an orbital period of only P_b~1.7
hours, it displays very similar orbital properties to many pulsars which are
eclipsed by their companion winds. The orbital period is the second shortest of
known binary pulsars after 47 Tuc R. The measured flux density of 1.3 +/- 0.4
mJy at 1332 MHz indicates that the pulsar is almost certainly the known

Identification of host transcriptional networks showing concentration-dependent regulation by HPV16 E6 and E7 proteins in basal cervical squamous epithelial cells.
Development of cervical squamous cell carcinoma requires increased expression of the major high-risk human-papillomavirus (HPV) oncogenes E6 and E7 in basal cervical epithelial cells. We used a systems biology approach to identify host transcriptional networks in such cells and study the concentration-dependent changes produced by HPV16-E6 and -E7 oncoproteins. We investigated sample sets derived from the W12 model of cervical neoplastic progression, for which high quality phenotype/genotype data were available. We defined a gene co-expression matrix containing a small number of highly-connected hub nodes that controlled large numbers of downstream genes (regulons), indicating the scale-free nature of host gene co-expression in W12. We identified a small number of 'master regulators' for which downstream effector genes were significantly associated with protein levels of HPV16 E6 (n = 7) or HPV16 E7 (n = 5). We validated our data by depleting E6/E7 in relevant cells and by functional analysis of selected genes in vitro. We conclude that the network of transcriptional interactions in HPV16-infected basal-type cervical epithelium is regulated in a concentration-dependent manner by E6/E7, via a limited number of central master-regulators. These effects are likely to be significant in cervical carcinogenesis, where there is competitive selection of cells with elevated expression of virus oncoproteins.Cancer Research UK (Programme Grant A13080)This is the final version of the article.
