Social housing as heritage : case study : Langa hostels : whose values and what significance?
Includes bibliographical references. This study examines the first identification and assignment of heritage values and significance undertaken by the “establishment”, the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and the City of Cape Town (CCT) in the Township of Langa in the Cape Province a decade ago. In brief, this is the story of Langa migrant labour hostels reviewed for its meaning as heritage to the diverse communities within Langa, compared with an earlier 2001/2 official evaluation by the state-led heritage management institutions. It is within a broader socio-political, cultural and heritage discourse context that this research project explores what the residents of Langa find significant. This is done with particular reference to the migrant labour hostel schemes since the intention was to establish to what extent conservation and heritage management is an appropriate response in an environment of material, economic and social difficulties; and, if so, to what degree the inhabitants of the hostels’ sense of value correspond to that articulated in the “official statement of significance” of 2004. This study questions the validity of nominating migrant labour hostels as “Grade I” national heritage resources
Assembling a Successful Industry-Sponsored Senior Capstone Program – Lessons Learned From a Startup Effort at a Liberal Arts University
A medium-sized (around 4000 students) liberal arts university recently began a general engineering program. The program’s first graduating class was in May 2016, and the program obtained initial ABET accreditation in August 2017. Entering the 2015-2016 academic year, program faculty envisioned a capstone design experience that would engage student teams in a year-long, professional level design project sponsored by an industry client. The first two years of the capstone design program have been inarguably successful, and in this paper we identify and reflect on the keys to our success. The intention for writing this paper is to ensure the success of the program is repeatable, and to assist other programs, especially those residing in small liberal arts universities, in starting or revising their own senior design experience. Our key factors in assembling a successful industry-sponsored capstone design program have been: (1) faculty buy-in and involvement, (2) engaged industry partners, (3) our teaming and project assignment strategy, (4) flexibility to address curricular concerns in program, and (5) building a corporate-like environment within the classroom. Early indicators of success include formal feedback from industry partners, feedback from our program’s industrial advisory board, and job placement of our program graduates
Simple Formula for Marcus-Hush-Chidsey Kinetics
The Marcus-Hush-Chidsey (MHC) model is well known in electro-analytical
chemistry as a successful microscopic theory of outer-sphere electron transfer
at metal electrodes, but it is unfamiliar and rarely used in electrochemical
engineering. One reason may be the difficulty of evaluating the MHC reaction
rate, which is defined as an improper integral of the Marcus rate over the
Fermi distribution of electron energies. Here, we report a simple analytical
approximation of the MHC integral that interpolates between exact asymptotic
limits for large overpotentials, as well as for large or small reorganization
energies, and exhibits less than 5\% relative error for all reasonable
parameter values. This result enables the MHC model to be considered as a
practical alternative to the ubiquitous Butler-Volmer equation for improved
understanding and engineering of electrochemical systems

Race-Ethnicity in American Politics
In the United States, immigration tends to be associated mainly with Hispanics, although recently Muslims and Africans have been entering the debate. Hispanics are the focal point of immigration discourse in this country, especially illegal immigration. The issue of illegal immigration has become a staple in current political hot topics

Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender/Immigration Policy in the U.S.
This issue brief outlines the connection between immigration policy and sexuality. For the most part, it will deal with the issue of gay marriage as it relates to immigration policy. This continues to be a contentious matter today

Minority Religion and Affirmative Action in the United States
This brief will highlight the inconsistencies with which the court system within the United States has handled cases pertaining to minority religion within the context of Affirmative Action. Those individuals are treated unfairly, and though Affirmative Action may benefit many individuals, it has yet to aid those discriminated due to their minority religion
