Discovery of a z=4.93, X-ray selected quasar by the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChamP)
We present X-ray and optical observations of CXOMP J213945.0-234655, a high
redshift (z=4.93) quasar discovered through the Chandra Multiwavelength Project
(ChaMP). This object is the most distant X-ray selected quasar published, with
an X-ray luminosity of L(X)=5.9x10^44 erg/s (measured in the 0.3-2.5 keV band
and corrected for Galactic absorption). CXOMP J213945.0-234655 is a g' dropout
object (>26.2), with r'=22.87 and i'=21.36. The rest-frame X-ray to optical
flux ratio is similar to quasars at lower redshifts and slightly X-ray bright
relative to z>4 optically-selected quasars observed with Chandra. The ChaMP is
beginning to acquire significant numbers of high redshift quasars to
investigate the unobscured X-ray luminosity function out to z~5.Comment: Published in ApJ Letters; 4 pages; 3 figures;

Principal Component Analysis of the Spectral Energy Distribution and Emission Line Properties of Red 2MASS Active Galactic Nuclei
We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and emission-line properties of the red (J – K_S >2) 2MASS active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using principle component analysis (PCA). The sample includes 44 low redshift AGNs with low or moderate obscuration (N_H <10^(23) cm^(–2)) as indicated by X-rays and SED modeling. The obscuration of the AGNs allows us to see weaker emission components (host-galaxy emission, AGN scattered light) which are usually outshone by the AGN. The first four eigenvectors explain 70% of the variance in the sample. Eigenvector 1 (33% variance in the sample) correlates with the ratios of the intrinsic X-ray flux to the observed optical/IR fluxes and the F(2-10 keV)/F([O III]) ratio. We suggest that it is primarily driven by the L/L_(Edd) ratio and strengthened by intrinsic absorption (both circumnuclear and galactic). Eigenvector 2 (18% of variance) correlates with optical/IR colors (B – K_S , B – R, J – K_S ) and optical spectral type and depends on the contribution of the host galaxy relative to the observed AGN emission. Eigenvector 3 (12% of variance) correlates with reddening indicators obtained from the X-rays (hardness ratio, spectral index, N_H ), and the narrow Hα/Hβ emission-line ratio. Their relation suggests a common absorber for the optical/X-rays lying outside the narrow-line region possibly in a moderately inclined host galaxy. Eigenvector 4 (8% of variance) correlates with the degree of polarization and the broad Hα/Hβ ratio, indicating that dust, which scatters the nuclear emission (continuum and the broad-line region emission), also reddens the broad lines. Our analysis shows that, although as suggested by unification schemes, the inclination dependent obscuration (circumnuclear and the host galaxy) is important in determining the AGN SEDs, the L/L_(Edd) ratio is the most important factor, followed by host-galaxy emission
Searching for emotion or race: Task - irrelevant facial cues have asymmetrical effects
Facial cues of threat such as anger and other race membership are detected preferentially in visual search tasks. However, it remains unclear whether these facial cues interact in visual search. If both cues equally facilitate search, a symmetrical interaction would be predicted; anger cues should facilitate detection of other race faces and cues of other race membership should facilitate detection of anger. Past research investigating this race by emotional expression interaction in categorisation tasks revealed an asymmetrical interaction. This suggests that cues of other race membership may facilitate the detection of angry faces but not vice versa. Utilising the same stimuli and procedures across two search tasks, participants were asked to search for targets defined by either race or emotional expression. Contrary to the results revealed in the categorisation paradigm, cues of anger facilitated detection of other race faces whereas differences in race did not differentially influence detection of emotion targets
A Missense Mutation in the Transcription Factor ETV5 Leads to Sterility, Increased Embryonic and Perinatal Death, Postnatal Growth Restriction, Renal Asymmetry and Polydactyly in the Mouse
ETV5 (Ets variant gene 5) is a transcription factor that is required for fertility. In this study, we demonstrate that ETV5 plays additional roles in embryonic and postnatal developmental processes in the mouse. Through a genome-wide mouse mutagenesis approach, we generated a sterile mouse line that carried a nonsense mutation in exon 12 of the Etv5 gene. The mutation led to the conversion of lysine at position 412 into a premature termination codon (PTC) within the ETS DNA binding domain of the protein. We showed that the PTC-containing allele produced a highly unstable mRNA, which in turn resulted in an undetectable level of ETV5 protein. The Etv5 mutation resulted in male and female sterility as determined by breeding experiments. Mutant males were sterile due to a progressive loss of spermatogonia, which ultimately resulted in a Sertoli cell only phenotype by 8 week-of-age. Further, the ETV5 target genes Cxcr4 and Ccl9 were significantly down-regulated in mutant neonate testes. CXCR4 and CCL9 have been implicated in the maintenance and migration of spermatogonia, respectively. Moreover, the Etv5 mutation resulted in several developmental abnormalities including an increased incidence of embryonic and perinatal lethality, postnatal growth restriction, polydactyly and renal asymmetry. BeppoSAX Observations of the Maser Sy2 Galaxy: ESO103-G35
We have made BeppoSAX observations of the Seyfert 2/1.9 galaxy ESO103-G35,
which contains a nuclear maser source and is known to be heavily absorbed in
the X-rays. Analysis of the X-ray spectra observed by SAX in October 1996 and
1997 yields a spectral index 0.74+/-0.07, typical of Seyfert galaxies and
consistent with earlier observations of this source. The strong, soft X-ray
absorption has column density 1.79E(23)/cm^2, again consistent with earlier
results. The best fitting spectrum is that of a power law with a high energy
cutoff at 29+/-10 keV, a cold, marginally resolved Fe Kalpha line with EW 290
eV (1996) and a mildly ionized Fe K-edge at 7.37 keV. The Kalpha line and cold
absorption are consistent with origin in a accretion disk/torus through which
our line-of-sight passes at a radial distance of pc. The Fe K-edge is
mildly ionized suggesting the presence of ionized gas probably in the inner
accretion disk, close to the central source or in a separate warm absorber. The
data quality is too low to distinguish between these possibilities but the
edge-on geometry implied by the water maser emission favors the former.
Comparison with earlier observations of ESO103-G35 shows little/no change in
spectral parameters while the flux changes by factors of a few on timescales of
a few months. The 2--10 keV flux decreased by a factor of 2.7 between Oct 1996
and Oct 1997 with no detectable change in the count rate >20 keV suggesting a
constant or delayed response reflection component. The high energy cutoff is
lower than the typical 300keV values seen in Seyfert galaxies. A significant
subset of similar sources would affect current models of the AGN contribution
to the cosmic X-ray background which generally assume a high energy cutoff of

Radio Jet Feedback and Star Formation in Heavily Obscured Quasars at Redshifts ~0.3-3, I: ALMA Observations
We present ALMA 870 micron (345 GHz) data for 49 high redshift (0.47<z<2.85),
luminous (11.7 < log L(bol) (Lsun) < 14.2) radio-powerful AGN, obtained to
constrain cool dust emission from starbursts concurrent with highly obscured
radiative-mode black hole (BH) accretion in massive galaxies which possess a
small radio jet. The sample was selected from WISE with extremely steep (red)
mid-infrared (MIR) colors and with compact radio emission from NVSS/FIRST.
Twenty-six sources are detected at 870 microns, and we find that the sample has
large mid- to far-infrared luminosity ratios consistent with a dominant and
highly obscured quasar. The rest-frame 3 GHz radio powers are 24.7 < log P3.0
GHz (W/Hz) < 27.3, and all sources are radio-intermediate or radio-loud. BH
mass estimates are 7.7 < log M(BH) (Msun) < 10.2. The rest frame 1-5 um SEDs
are very similar to the "Hot DOGs" (Hot Dust Obscured Galaxies), and steeper
(redder) than almost any other known extragalactic sources. ISM masses
estimated for the ALMA detected sources are 9.9 < log M(ISM) (Msun) < 11.75
assuming a dust temperature of 30K. The cool dust emission is consistent with
star formation rates (SFRs) reaching several thousand Msun/yr, depending on the
assumed dust temperature, however we cannot rule out the alternative that the
AGN powers all the emission in some cases. Our best constrained source has
radiative transfer solutions with ~ equal contributions from an obscured AGN

The Chandra Multi-Wavelength Project: Optical Spectroscopy and the Broadband Spectral Energy Distributions of X-ray Selected AGN
From optical spectroscopy of X-ray sources observed as part of ChaMP, we
present redshifts and classifications for a total of 1569 Chandra sources from
our targeted spectroscopic follow up using the FLWO, SAAO, WIYN, CTIO, KPNO,
Magellan, MMT and Gemini telescopes, and from archival SDSS spectroscopy. We
classify the optical counterparts as 50% BLAGN, 16% NELG, 14% ALG, and 20%
stars. We detect QSOs out to z~5.5 and galaxies out to z~3. We have compiled
extensive photometry from X-ray to radio bands. Together with our spectroscopic
information, this enables us to derive detailed SEDs for our extragalactic
sources. We fit a variety of templates to determine bolometric luminosities,
and to constrain AGN and starburst components where both are present. While
~58% of X-ray Seyferts require a starburst event to fit observed photometry
only 26% of the X-ray QSO population appear to have some kind of star formation
contribution. This is significantly lower than for the Seyferts, especially if
we take into account torus contamination at z>1 where the majority of our X-ray
QSOs lie. In addition, we observe a rapid drop of the percentage of starburst
contribution as X-ray luminosity increases. This is consistent with the
quenching of star formation by powerful QSOs, as predicted by the merger model,
or with a time lag between the peak of star formation and QSO activity. We have
tested the hypothesis that there should be a strong connection between X-ray
obscuration and star-formation but we do not find any association between X-ray
column density and star formation rate both in the general population or the
star-forming X-ray Seyferts. Our large compilation also allows us to report
here the identification of 81 XBONG, 78 z>3 X-ray sources and 8 Type-2 QSO
candidates. Also we have identified the highest redshift (z=5.4135) X-ray

A genomics-informed, SNP association study reveals FBLN1 and FABP4 as contributing to resistance to fleece rot in Australian Merino sheep
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Fleece rot (FR) and body-strike of Merino sheep by the sheep blowfly <it>Lucilia cuprina </it>are major problems for the Australian wool industry, causing significant losses as a result of increased management costs coupled with reduced wool productivity and quality. In addition to direct effects on fleece quality, fleece rot is a major predisposing factor to blowfly strike on the body of sheep. In order to investigate the genetic drivers of resistance to fleece rot, we constructed a combined ovine-bovine cDNA microarray of almost 12,000 probes including 6,125 skin expressed sequence tags and 5,760 anonymous clones obtained from skin subtracted libraries derived from fleece rot resistant and susceptible animals. This microarray platform was used to profile the gene expression changes between skin samples of six resistant and six susceptible animals taken immediately before, during and after FR induction. Mixed-model equations were employed to normalize the data and 155 genes were found to be differentially expressed (DE). Ten DE genes were selected for validation using real-time PCR on independent skin samples. The genomic regions of a further 5 DE genes were surveyed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that were genotyped across three populations for their associations with fleece rot resistance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The majority of the DE genes originated from the fleece rot subtracted libraries and over-representing gene ontology terms included defense response to bacterium and epidermis development, indicating a role of these processes in modulating the sheep's response to fleece rot. We focused on genes that contribute to the physical barrier function of skin, including keratins, collagens, fibulin and lipid proteins, to identify SNPs that were associated to fleece rot scores.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We identified FBLN1 (fibulin) and FABP4 (fatty acid binding protein 4) as key factors in sheep's resistance to fleece rot. Validation of these markers in other populations could lead to vital tests for marker assisted selection that will ultimately increase the natural fleece rot resistance of Merino sheep.</p
The influence of baseline sleep on exercise-induced cognitive change in cognitively unimpaired older adults: A randomised clinical trial
Objectives: Observational studies consistently demonstrate that physical activity is associated with elevated cognitive function, however, there remains significant heterogeneity in cognitive outcomes from randomized exercise interventions. Individual variation in sleep behaviours may be a source of variability in the effectiveness of exercise-induced cognitive change, however this has not yet been investigated. The current study aimed to (1) investigate the influence of a 6-month exercise intervention on sleep, assessed pre- and post-intervention and, (2) investigate whether baseline sleep measures moderate exercise-induced cognitive changes. Methods: We utilised data from the Intense Physical Activity and Cognition (IPAC) study (n = 89), a 6-month moderate intensity and high intensity exercise intervention, in cognitively unimpaired community-dwelling older adults aged 60–80 (68.76 ± 5.32). Exercise was supervised and completed on a stationary exercise bicycle, and cognitive function was measured using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery administered pre- and post-intervention. Sleep was measured using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. There was no effect of the exercise intervention on any sleep outcomes from pre- to post-intervention. Results: There was a significant moderating effect of baseline sleep efficiency on both episodic memory and global cognition within the moderate intensity exercise group, such that those with poorer sleep efficiency at baseline showed greater exercise-induced improvements in episodic memory. Conclusions: These results suggest that those with poorer sleep may have the greatest exercise-induced cognitive benefits and that baseline sleep behaviours may be an important source of heterogeneity in previous exercise interventions targeting cognitive outcomes
