The Rebirth of Civil Society

This article examines the development, activities and effectiveness of women’s NGOs in 10 Central and Eastern European countries. It begins by examining the establishment of women’s organizations post-1989, identifying their structure, funding difficulties and the issues on which they focus. It also addresses the tension between the work of NGOs and the wider development of civil society. The article goes on to explore how negative perceptions of feminism have hindered efforts to develop a unified and coherent agenda among women’s NGOs. Finally, it analyses how public attitudes have affected relations between women’s organizations and women politicians as well as how competition and fragmentation have complicated relationships between NGOs

A Fractured Family and Its Heirs: Seljuq Power and the “Sunni Revival” in the Middle East, 1000-1200 CE

The Seljuq Turks were a group of nomadic warriors who converted to Sunni Islam by the end of the tenth century. Over the course of the next half century the Seljuqs conquered the majority of what we now call the Middle East. One Seljuq dynasty in particular, known to historians as the Great Seljuqs, positioned themselves as the dominant political power in the region as well as champions of Sunni Islam. Scholars refer to this period of Seljuq control as the “Sunni Revival” and debate heavily whether Seljuq political and religious practices were the cause of this “Revival,” as well as whether there was ever a “Sunni Revival” at all. The question of the extent of direct Seljuq involvement matters because this period was a pivotal moment in the religious and political history of the region. My research seeks to understand the factors that caused the structural changes evident in Islamic societies between 1000-1200 CE, including the question of revival, the role of the Great Seljuqs, and the political and religious strategies they and others employed. Indeed, as I show, the Great Seljuqs were so influential in their religious devotion and political system that they created standards of rule that would influence Islam and Islamic rule for centuries

Academia’s Past Boundaries in the Present Future

In the later nineteenth century, Americans trained and acquired history degrees in Europe and Germany. It was in Europe that American scholars developed their understanding of what an “Historian” was. This image was one of a masculine “objective” researcher solving and discovering the “truth” of the past. It was these characteristics that formed the original boundaries of the American historical discipline. These boundaries remain and can be seen in contemporary discourse on academia. In Chapter Two this discourse is discussed and explored focusing on the four groups of scholars, disciplines, institutions, and the public. My research seeks to understand how the boundaries continue to reinforce an inaccessible academia and how these effects are demonstrated in the relationship between these groups. In a discussion of academia it is necessary to discuss academic labor both in how scholars see their own labor, and in how that labor is designed to reinforce existing boundaries

Kansei engineering + user experience design driving innovation in healthcare

In this presentation we will investigate how Kansei Engineering and user experience design come together to solve real problems in a large healthcare organization, transcending the boundaries between physical and digital solutions and contexts. We will investigate examples from industry and various methodology for driving collaboration and culture change. We will also discuss the value and, perhaps more importantly, the responsibilities that come with participating in the engineering of sticky and infectious experiences. Organizational structures and other enabling details will also be explored
