    On August 5, 1980, a dead 950 pound steer was submitted to the Iowa Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for necropsy (IVDL Case 18274). The history included acute dyspnea, raspy cough, a temperature of 40.5-41.7 C (105-107 F) in 20 out of 125 animals and two death.s These cattle had been purchased on July 17, 1980 and first noticed sick on August 4, 1980. The tentative diagnoses were Hemophilus pneumonia and viral pneumonia. Treatment included intravenous tetrayccline and intramuscular penicillin and resulted in a fairly good response

    Two distinct light-induced reactions are needed to promote germination in spores of Ceratopteris richardii

    Germination of Ceratopteris richardii spores is initiated by light and terminates 3-4 days later with the emergence of a rhizoid. Early studies documented that the photoreceptor for initiating this response is phytochrome. However, completion of germination requires additional light input. If no further light stimulus is given after phytochrome photoactivation, the spores do not germinate. Here we show that a crucial second light reaction is required, and its function is to activate and sustain photosynthesis. Even in the presence of light, blocking photosynthesis with DCMU after phytochrome photoactivation blocks germination. In addition, RT-PCR showed that transcripts for different phytochromes are expressed in spores in darkness, and the photoactivation of these phytochromes results in the increased transcription of messages encoding chlorophyll a/b binding proteins. The lack of chlorophyll-binding protein transcripts in unirradiated spores and their slow accumulation makes it unlikely that photosynthesis is required for the initial light reaction. This conclusion is supported by the observation that the transient presence of DCMU, only during the initial light reaction, had no effect on germination. Additionally, the [ATP] in Ceratopteris richardii spores increased coincidentally with the length of light treatment during germination. Overall, these results support the conclusion that two distinct light reactions are required for the germination of Ceratopteris richardii spores

    The Universal Plausibility Metric (UPM) & Principle (UPP)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mere possibility is not an adequate basis for asserting scientific plausibility. A precisely defined universal bound is needed beyond which the assertion of <it>plausibility</it>, particularly in life-origin models, can be considered operationally falsified. But can something so seemingly relative and subjective as plausibility ever be quantified? Amazingly, the answer is, "Yes." A method of objectively measuring the plausibility of any chance hypothesis (The Universal Plausibility Metric [UPM]) is presented. A numerical inequality is also provided whereby any chance hypothesis can be definitively falsified when its UPM metric of ξ is < 1 (The Universal Plausibility Principle [UPP]). Both UPM and UPP pre-exist and are independent of any experimental design and data set.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>No low-probability hypothetical plausibility assertion should survive peer-review without subjection to the UPP inequality standard of formal falsification (ξ < 1).</p

    The association of academic tracking to depressive symptoms among adolescents in three Caribbean countries

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Students who are tracked into low performing schools or classrooms that limit their life chances may report increased depressive symptoms. Limited research has been conducted on academic tracking and its association with depressive symptoms among high school students in the Caribbean. This project examines levels of depressive symptoms among tenth grade students tracked within and between high schools in Jamaica, St. Vincent and St. Kitts and Nevis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Students enrolled in grade ten of the 2006/2007 academic year in Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent were administered the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II). In Jamaica and St. Vincent, academic tracking was operationalized using data provided by the local Ministries of Education. These Ministries ranked ordered schools according to students' performance on Caribbean school leaving examinations. In St. Kitts and Nevis tracking was operationalized by classroom assignments within schools whereby students were grouped into classrooms according to their levels of academic achievement. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between academic tracking and BDI-II depression scores.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A wide cross-section of 4<sup>th </sup>form students in each nation was sampled (n = 1738; 278 from Jamaica, 737 St. Kitts and Nevis, 716 from St. Vincent; 52% females, 46.2% males and 1.8% no gender reported; age 12 to 19 years, mean = 15.4 yrs, sd = .9 yr). Roughly half (53%) of the students reported some symptoms of depression with 19.2% reporting moderate and 10.7% reporting severe symptoms of depression. Students in Jamaica reported significantly higher depression scores than those in either St. Kitts and Nevis or St. Vincent (p < .01). Students assigned to a higher academic track reported significantly lower BDI-II scores than students who were assigned to the lower academic track (p < .01).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>There appears to be an association between academic tracking and depressive symptoms that is differentially manifested across the islands of Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent.</p

    (Re)Moralizing the suicide debate

    Contemporary approaches to the study of suicide tend to examine suicide as a medical or public health problem rather than a moral problem, avoiding the kinds of judgements that have historically characterised discussions of the phenomenon. But morality entails more than judgement about action or behaviour, and our understanding of suicide can be enhanced by attending to its cultural, social, and linguistic connotations. In this work, I offer a theoretical reconstruction of suicide as a form of moral experience that delineates five distinct, yet interrelated domains of understanding – the temporal, the relational, the existential, the ontological, and the linguistic. Attention to each of these domains, I argue, not only enriches our understanding of the moral realm, but provides a heuristic for examining the moral traditions and practices which constitute contemporary understandings of suicide.
