The SHARD Project: evidence based guidelines for the preservation of historical research data

    Get PDF
SHARD was a JISC funded project (2011-2012) uniting the skills of the University of London Computer Centre (ULCC), the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and HistorySpot. It used a qualitative methodology to analyse the data management practices and needs of historical researchers, and developed free online training materials for the preservation of research data. In addition the SHARD team worked with parallel projects in the JISC programme, at London School of Economics (LSE) and Cambridge University, to create a series of FAQs, and the leaflet, “Sending Your Research Material Into The Future”, designed by Malcom Raggett, and reproduced in this poster with an Italian translation by Stefania Arabito

    BlogForever: D3.1 Preservation Strategy Report

    Get PDF
This report describes preservation planning approaches and strategies recommended by the BlogForever project as a core component of a weblog repository design. More specifically, we start by discussing why we would want to preserve weblogs in the first place and what it is exactly that we are trying to preserve. We further present a review of past and present work and highlight why current practices in web archiving do not address the needs of weblog preservation adequately. We make three distinctive contributions in this volume: a) we propose transferable practical workflows for applying a combination of established metadata and repository standards in developing a weblog repository, b) we provide an automated approach to identifying significant properties of weblog content that uses the notion of communities and how this affects previous strategies, c) we propose a sustainability plan that draws upon community knowledge through innovative repository design

The US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) supports molecular HIV and tuberculosis diagnostic networks and information management systems in low- and middle-income countries. We describe how national programs leveraged these PEPFAR-supported laboratory resources for SARS-CoV-2 testing during the COVID-19 pandemic. We sent a spreadsheet template consisting of 46 indicators for assessing the use of PEPFAR-supported diagnostic networks for COVID-19 pandemic response activities during April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, to 27 PEPFAR-supported countries or regions. A total of 109 PEPFAR-supported centralized HIV viral load and early infant diagnosis laboratories and 138 decentralized HIV and TB sites reported performing SARS-CoV-2 testing in 16 countries. Together, these sites contributed to >3.4 million SARS-CoV-2 tests during the 1-year period. Our findings illustrate that PEPFAR-supported diagnostic networks provided a wide range of resources to respond to emergency COVID-19 diagnostic testing in 16 low- and middle-income countries

    Cultural genocide

War throughout time has resulted in countless atrocities. Recent history has been witness to incredible calculated violence and horrendous crimes against humanity. Crimes such as planned and methodical extermination, rape and genocide have been committed in the world highlighting that man’s inhumanity to man is still very much in evidence. Is it appropriate that we mention the destruction of archives in the same context during times of war and occupation? It is. We must pay attention to and understand the importance of memory, the archive, and the record to a people, especially during a time of war and occupation. The destruction of archives and records is a destruction of the unseen, not of flesh and blood but that of the soul of a people
