    To which world regions does the valenceā€“dominance model of social perception apply?

    Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorovā€™s valenceā€“dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorovā€™s methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorovā€™s original analysis strategy, the valenceā€“dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization.     Racial Disparities in the Sharing Economy: Evidence from More Than 100,000 Airbnb Hosts across 14 Countries

    Sharing economy platforms, such as Airbnb, often requires (or strongly encourages) hosts to share personal information, such as names and profile photos. Previous research suggests that consumers rely on this information to discriminate against hosts from racial minorities. If there is a preference for White hosts, then they should be able to charge higher prices for qualitatively similar rentals. We test this hypothesis using data from Airbnb. An analysis of 96,150 listings across 24 cities and 14 countries showed that non-White hosts charge approximately 2.5%ā€“3% lower prices for qualitatively similar listings (study 1). A preregistered analysis of 12,648 listings across 14 cities in the United States showed that Black hosts charge approximately 5%ā€“7% lower prices and Asian hosts charge approximately 4%ā€“6% lower prices for similar listings (study 2). These findings support the hypothesis that consumers show a preference for White hosts, which allows White hosts to charge higher prices

    No effects of synchronicity in online social dilemma experiments:A registered report

    Online experiments have become a valuable research tool for researchers interested in the processes underlying cooperation. Typically, online experiments are asynchronous, participants complete an experiment individually and are matched with partners after data collection has been completed. We conducted a registered report to compare asynchronous and synchronous designs, where participants interact and receive feedback in real-time. We investigated how two features of synchronous designs, pre-decision matching and immediate feedback, influence cooperation in the prisoners dilemma. We hypothesized that 1) pre-decision matching (assigning participants to specific interaction partners before they make decisions) would lead to decreased social distance and increased cooperation; 2) immediate feedback would reduce feelings of aversive uncertainty and lead to increased cooperation; and 3) individuals with prosocial Social Value Orientations would be more sensitive to the differences between synchronous and asynchronous designs. We found no support for these hypotheses. In our study (N = 1,238), pre-decision matching and immediate feedback had no significant effects on cooperative behavior or perceptions of the interaction; and their effects on cooperation were not significantly moderated by Social Value Orientation. The present results suggest that synchronous designs have little effect on cooperation in online social dilemma experiments

    Extremism reduces conflict arousal and increases values affirmation in response to meaning violations

    In the social psychological threat-compensation literature, there is an apparent contradiction whereby relatively extreme beliefs both decrease markers of physiological arousal following meaning violations, and increase the values affirmation behaviors understood as a palliative responses to this arousal. We hypothesize that this is due to the differential impact of measuring extremism on behavioral inhibition and approach systems following meaning violations, whereby extremism both reduces markers of conflict arousal (BIS) and increases values affirmation (BAS) unrelated to this initial arousal. Using pupil dilation as a proxy for immediate conflict arousal, we found that the same meaning violation (anomalous playing cards) evoked greater pupil dilation, and that this pupillary reaction was diminished in participants who earlier reported extreme beliefs. We also found that reporting extreme beliefs was associated with greater affirmation of an unrelated meaning framework, where this affirmation was unrelated to physiological markers of conflict arousal

    The effects of facial attractiveness and trustworthiness in online peer-to-peer markets

    Online peer-to-peer markets, such as Airbnb, often include profile photos of sellers to reduce anonymity. Ert, Fleischer, and Magen (2016) found that more trustworthy-looking, but not more attractive-looking, Airbnb hosts from Stockholm charge higher prices for similar apartments. This suggests that people are willing to pay more for a night in an apartment if the host looks trustworthy. Here, we present a pre-registered replication testing how photo-based impressions of hostsā€™ attractiveness and trustworthiness influence rental prices. We extend previous investigations by (a) controlling for additional features related to price (e.g., the apartment's location value), (b) testing for an influence of other host features, such as race and facial expression, and (c) analyzing a substantially larger sample of apartments. An analysis of 1,020 listings in New York City showed that more attractive-looking, but not more trustworthy-looking, hosts charge higher prices for their apartments. Compared to White hosts, Black (but not Asian) hosts charge lower prices for their apartments. Hosts who smile more intensely in their profile photo charge higher prices. Our results support the general conclusion that people rely on profile photos in online markets, though we find that attractiveness is more important than trustworthiness
