Branched alkylpolyglycosides derived from Dimorphecolic acid: synthesis and surface active properties
Released on demand
TNO has created a 'release on demand' technology in which matrix particles are formed from biopolymers crosslinked into a three-dimensional network. The particles release compounds only when triggered by stimuli such as temperature, pH, humidity or certain bacterial metabolites. This gives efficient use of active ingredients and prevents premature leaching
Carbohydrates are oxidized by treatment with a Fe(III) complex as oxidizing agent in the presence of a di-tertiary-alkyl-nitroxyl compound as catalyst
Carbohydrates are oxidized with a Fe(III) complex in the presence of a di-tertiary-alkyl-nitroxyl compound as catalyst. A process for the oxidation of carbohydrates by treatment with a Fe(III) complex as oxidizing agent in the presence of a catalytic amount of a di-tert.-alkyl-nitroxyl compound
Improved calcium sequestering carbohydrate based agents
The improved tandem oxidation sequence of starch with the aim of developing, e.g. degradable co-builders suitable for laundry formulations as an alternative to the currently used polyacrylates is described. The tandem oxidation of starch starts with sodium periodate treatment of granular starch followed by oxidation of the dialdehyde product with sodium chlorite to dicarboxy starch. It turns out that improving the periodate oxidation resulting in a more complete transformation of the glucose moiety into the dialdehyde product yields, after sodium chlorite oxidation, a dicarboxy starch with a calcium sequestering capacity of 3.3 mmol Ca2+ per gram of dicarboxy product. This is an improvement of about 25% compared with current literature data. © 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Functionalized polysaccharides
Functionalised carbohydrates can be obtained if a carbohydrate is caused to react with an epoxy compound which also contains a double carbon-carbon bond, such as allyl glycidyl ether, to form a hydroxyalkenyl derivative of the carbohydrate. This derivative can then be epoxidised to form a hydroxy-epoxyalkyl derivative of the carbohydrate. This epoxyalkyl derivative is particularly suitable for further functionalisation of the carbohydrate. The invention relates both to the processes and to the products obtainable thereby
