    Three Years (2008-2010) Measurements of Atmospheric Concentrations of Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) at Station Nord, North East Greenland

    Atmospheric concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been measured for the first time at Station Nord, North-East Greenland, from 2008 to 2010. The data obtained are reported here. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), endosulfan I and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) were the predominant compounds detected in the atmosphere, followed by p,p′-DDE and dieldrin. Chlordane isomers and related compounds (trans- and cis-chlordanes, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide, trans- and cis-nonachlor) were also detected. Atmospheric concentrations of the investigated compounds were correlated with temperature using the Clausius–Clapeyron equation in order to obtain information about their transport properties. The correlation between atmospheric concentrations and temperature was not significant for endosulfan I, γ-HCH and p,p′-DDT, which indicates that direct transport from direct sources is the dominating transport mechanism for these compounds. A significant correlation with temperature was found for all the other studied pesticides and pesticide degradation products, which indicates that re-emission of these compounds from previously contaminated surfaces is an important factor for the observed variation in concentrations. Pesticide concentrations were also correlated with sea ice cover. Concentrations of the compounds that have not been in use for decades correlated with temperature and ice cover, while concentrations of compounds still in use did not correlate with either of these parameters. These observations indicate that processes such as revolatilization from the open sea surface are important mediating factors in the dynamics of anthropogenic persistent pollutants in the Arctic environment under the expected influence of climate change processes

    Antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use animal monitoring policies in Europe: Where are we?

    The World Health Organization has recognized antimicrobial resistance as one of the top three threats to human health. Any use of antibiotics in animals will ultimately affect humans and vice versa. Appropriate monitoring of antimicrobial use and resistance has been repeatedly emphasized along with the need for global policies. Under the auspices of the European Union research project, EFFORT, we mapped antimicrobial use and resistance monitoring programs in ten European countries. We then compared international and European guidelines and policies. In resistance monitoring, we did not find important differences between countries. Current resistance monitoring systems are focused on food animal species (using fecal samples). They ignore companion animals. The scenario is different for monitoring antibiotics use. Recently, countries have tried to harmonize methodologies, but reporting of antimicrobial use remains voluntary. We therefore identified a need for stronger policies

    Direct identification and susceptibility testing of enteric bacilli from positive blood cultures using VITEK (GNI+/GNS-GA)

    AbstractObjective To study the possibility of reporting results of identification and susceptibility testing of Gram-negative bacilli the same day as bacteremia is detected by using direct inoculation from positive blood cultures (Bactec 9240) into VITEK GNI+ and GNS-GA cards.Methods All blood cultures with Gram-negative enteric bacillus-like morphology on microscopy found to be positive on workdays between 15 June 1999 and 29 February 2000 were included. Identification and susceptibility testing were done by three methods: the direct method using a suspension made by differential centrifugation of positive blood culture broth for inoculation of the VITEK cards; the standard method using an inoculum made from an overnight culture on a solid media; and the routine method (reference method) using conventional testing.Results Of 169 isolates, the direct method resulted in 75% correct identifications, 9% misidentifications and 17% non-identifications. All misidentified isolateswere Escherichia coli, of which 80% were reported as Salmonella arizonae. Five biochemical tests yielded most of the aberrant results; correcting the citrate and malonate reactions in most cases led to correct identification by the VITEK database. Despite a negative H2S reaction, 11 E. coli isolates were reported as S. arizonae. Two-thirds (69%) of identifications were reported within 6 h, and 95% of these were correct. The direct susceptibility testing method was assessable for 140 isolates. Correct results were found in 99% of isolate-antimicrobial combinations, and 85% were reported within 6 h.Conclusion The direct VITEK method could correctly report identifications and susceptibility patterns within 6 h, making same-day reporting possible for almost two-thirds (63%) of bacteremic episodes with Gram-negative bacilli. These results could probably be improved by modification of the identification algorithms of the VITEK software

    Imaging the Creative Unconscious:Reflexive Neural Responses to Objects in the Visual and Parahippocampal Region Predicts State and Trait Creativity

    Abstract What does it take to have a creative mind? Theories of creative cognition assert that the quantity of automatic associations places fundamental constraints on the probability of reaching creative solutions. Due to the difficulties inherent in isolating automated associative responses from cognitive control, the neural basis underlying this faculty remains unknown. Here we acquired fMRI data in an incidental-viewing paradigm in which subjects performed an attention-demanding task whilst viewing task-irrelevant objects. By assigning a standard creativity task on the same objects out of the scanner, as well as a battery of psychometric creativity tests, we could assess whether stimulus-bound neural activity was predictive of state or trait variability in creativity. We found that stimulus-bound responses in superior occipital regions were linearly predictive of trial-by-trial variability in creative performance (state-creativity), and that in more creative individuals (trait-creativity) this response was more strongly expressed in entorhinal cortex. Additionally, the mean response to the onset of objects in parahippocampal gyrus was predictive of trait differences in creativity. This work suggests that, creative individuals are endowed with occipital and medial temporal reflexes that generate a greater fluency in associative representations, making them more accessible for ideation even when no ideation is explicitly called for
