    Student and staff expectations and experiences of a UK–China Transnational Education collaboration

    Purpose: This study reports the results of a survey of teaching staff in the UK and China and two cohorts of Chinese students. We explored perceptions of a Transnational Education (TNE) course taught by UK teachers at a Chinese university to ascertain similarities and differences in perceptions and to help inform future TNE design and provision. Design/methodology/approach: Teachers in the UK (N = 10) and Chinese University (N = 20) and two cohorts of Chinese students (N = 102) completed questionnaires about their perceptions of the collaboration, including why they thought the university had developed the course and the benefits and risks of the course. They were also asked why they personally or why they thought the students had enrolled in the course. Questions were a mix of forced choice and open response formats. Findings: Prior to the course commencing, differences were identified between UK and Chinese teachers in their perception of the risks and benefits of the course and the challenges students might face. Differences were also seen in teachers' and students' views about why students enrolled and their expectations about the course. The TNE is no longer running and many of the reasons for this were identified by our participants before the course had begun. Originality/value: This suggests the importance of engaging with various stakeholders in the setup of TNE to ensure a close match between staff, student and institutional expectations of the course. This is likely to increase the likelihood of success of such programmes

    Integration and Operation of an Electrically Small Magnetic EZ Antenna With a High-Power Standing Wave Oscillator Source

    © 2015 IEEE. The efficacy of the three-dimensional, rectangular magnetic EZ antenna for use with mesoband high-power microwave (HPM) sources has been demonstrated previously. It overcomes the typical bulky and massive impedance-matching components found currently in most HPM systems, making it an attractive option when space is very limited. However, its extremely compact nature presents practical challenges when dealing with extremely high-power sources due to the associated local field enhancements near the feed and the near-field resonant parasitic element. This letter presents a fully integrated, high-voltage source and radiating system that has several improvements in the antenna, source, and power system that have not before been demonstrated. The full system includes a ferroelectric generator, standing wave oscillator source, and electrically small antenna (ka = 0.37) operating at 510 MHz that can be packaged inside a 15-cm-diameter tube. This small diameter results in a quarter-wavelength-diameter ground plane, and the effects of this small ground plane on the radiation characteristics are explored.     Estimation of ground reaction forces and moments during gait using only inertial motion capture

    Ground reaction forces and moments (GRF&M) are important measures used as input in biomechanical analysis to estimate joint kinetics, which often are used to infer information for many musculoskeletal diseases. Their assessment is conventionally achieved using laboratory-based equipment that cannot be applied in daily life monitoring. In this study, we propose a method to predict GRF&M during walking, using exclusively kinematic information from fully-ambulatory inertial motion capture (IMC). From the equations of motion, we derive the total external forces and moments. Then, we solve the indeterminacy problem during double stance using a distribution algorithm based on a smooth transition assumption. The agreement between the IMC-predicted and reference GRF&M was categorized over normal walking speed as excellent for the vertical (ρ = 0.992, rRMSE = 5.3%), anterior (ρ = 0.965, rRMSE = 9.4%) and sagittal (ρ = 0.933, rRMSE = 12.4%) GRF&M components and as strong for the lateral (ρ = 0.862, rRMSE = 13.1%), frontal (ρ = 0.710, rRMSE = 29.6%), and transverse GRF&M (ρ = 0.826, rRMSE = 18.2%). Sensitivity analysis was performed on the effect of the cut-off frequency used in the filtering of the input kinematics, as well as the threshold velocities for the gait event detection algorithm. This study was the first to use only inertial motion capture to estimate 3D GRF&M during gait, providing comparable accuracy with optical motion capture prediction. This approach enables applications that require estimation of the kinetics during walking outside the gait laboratory

    CANNABIS USE AMONG A SAMPLE OF 16 TO 18 YEAR-OLD STUDENTS IN SWITZERLAND

    Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of cannabis use among Swiss students and to assess their attitudes regarding health and safety issues associated with drug use. Subjects and methods: After a workshop, 173 students (23.1% male, 75.7% female; 44.4% age 16, 43.8% age 17 and 11.8% age 18) from a Swiss school were surveyed by questionnaire. Results: 59.3% (n=103) of all participants had tried cannabis, and 30.1% of those who reported cannabis use had consumed more than 100 joints. Of those 103 students with cannabis experience, 6.8% rated the risk of cannabis-related psychic effects as low, and 9.8% were not concerned about driving under the influence of cannabis. In cases of heavy cannabis use, the chance of increased tobacco, alcohol or other drug use is higher than for those with less or no cannabis use at all (odds ratios of 4.33-10.86). Conclusions: This paper deals primarily with cannabis prevalence data in adolescents from previous studies and sources, and shows that our findings deviate significantly - and surprisingly - from past research. Our data from a school survey indicates higher cannabis use than data from official drug policy studies. Additionally, our data shows that the students’ self-reported attitudes towards health and safety issues were mostly realistic. The examination of methodological issues that might impact prevalence estimates should be added to the cannabis literature

    Musculoskeletal model-based inverse dynamic analysis under ambulatory conditions using inertial motion capture

    Inverse dynamic analysis using musculoskeletal modeling is a powerful tool, which is utilized in a range of applications to estimate forces in ligaments, muscles, and joints, non-invasively. To date, the conventional input used in this analysis is derived from optical motion capture (OMC) and force plate (FP) systems, which restrict the application of musculoskeletal models to gait laboratories. To address this problem, we propose the use of inertial motion capture to perform musculoskeletal model-based inverse dynamics by utilizing a universally applicable ground reaction force and moment (GRF&M) prediction method. Validation against a conventional laboratory-based method showed excellent Pearson correlations for sagittal plane joint angles of ankle, knee, and hip (ρ=0.95, 0.99, and 0.99, respectively) and root-mean-squared-differences (RMSD) of 4.1 ± 1.3° 4.4 ± 2.0° and 5.7 ± 2.1° respectively. The GRF&M predicted using IMC input were found to have excellent correlations for three components (vertical: ρ=0.97, RMSD = 9.3 ± 3.0 %BW, anteroposterior: ρ=0.91, RMSD = 5.5 ± 1.2 %BW, sagittal: ρ=0.91, RMSD = 1.6 ± 0.6 %BW*BH), and strong correlations for mediolateral (ρ=0.80, RMSD = 2.1 ± 0.6 %BW) and transverse (ρ=0.82, RMSD = 0.2 ± 0.1 %BW*BH). The proposed IMC-based method removes the complexity and space restrictions of OMC and FP systems and could enable applications of musculoskeletal models in either monitoring patients during their daily lives or in wider clinical practice

    ETHYL GLUCURONIDE: A BIOMARKER TO IDENTIFY ALCOHOL USE BY HEALTH PROFESSIONALS RECOVERING FROM SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

    Aims: Physicians recovering from substance-related disorders are usually allowed to return to practice if they agree to remain abstinent from drugs, including alcohol, and to undergo random urine testing. Over 9000 physicians are currently involved in such monitoring programs in the US. To date, it has been difficult to adequately monitor abstinence from alcohol due to the short half-life of alcohol and no other highly specific marker. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a direct metabolite of alcohol, offers an extended window for assessment of drinking status (up to 5 days). Our aim was to assess the potential value of EtG testing in abstinence-based monitoring programs. Patients and methods: Urine samples were obtained from 100 participants in a physician monitoring program and additional samples were subsequently obtained ‘for cause', ‘to verify positive urine alcohol, when drinking was denied' and ‘in high risk individuals'. All participants had signed contracts agreeing to remain abstinent from mood-altering drugs, including alcohol, and had agreed to random urine testing. EtG was determined using LC/MS-MS in addition to standard testing. The main outcome measure were urine specimens positive for EtG versus those positive based on standard testing for alcohol and other drugs. Results: Among the initial 100 random samples collected, no sample was positive for alcohol using standard testing; however, seven were positive for EtG (0.5-196 mg/l), suggesting recent alcohol use. Subsequent EtG testing was performed clinically during the course of monitoring. Of the 18 tests performed to date, eight of eight tests performed ‘for cause' were positive for EtG but negative for all other drugs including urine alcohol. All eight were confirmed positive by self reported drinking by the patient when confronted regarding the positive test result. Of six tests performed to ‘confirm a positive urine alcohol' two were positive for EtG and confirmed positive by self reported drinking. For the other four samples, especially as two are from a diabetic, in vitro fermentation of ethanol is discussed. Conclusions: These data suggest that physicians in monitoring programs have a higher rate of unrecognized alcohol use than previously reported.
