    The New Eclipsing Cataclysmic Variable SDSS 154453+2553

    The cataclysmic variable SDSS154453+2553 was recently identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We obtained spectra and photometry at the MDM Observatory, which revealed an eclipse with a 6.03 hour period. The H{\alpha} emission line exhibits a strong rotational disturbance during eclipse, indicating that it arises in an accretion disk. A contribution from an M-type companion is also observed. Time-series photometry during eclipse gives an ephemeris of 2454878.0062(15) + 0.251282(2)E. We present spectroscopy through the orbit and eclipse photometry.     Association between indigenous status and Body Mass Index (BMI) in Australian adults: Does sleep duration affect the relationship?

    Background: Overweight/obesity is a well-defined risk factor for a variety of chronic cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Sleep duration has been associated with overweight/obesity and other cardio metabolic and neurocognitive problems. Notably, overweight/obesity and many of the associated comorbidities are prevalent in Indigenous Australians. Generally, sleep duration has been associated with BMI for Australian adults but information about Australian Indigenous adults’ sleep is scant. A recent report established that sleep is a weak predictor of obesity for Indigenous Australian adults. Aim: To determine whether sleep remains a predictor of obesity when physical activity, diet and smoking status are accounted for; and to determine whether sleep duration plays a mediating role in the relationship between Indigenous status and BMI. Methods: Statistical analyses of 5,886 Australian adults: 5236 non-Indigenous and 650 Indigenous people aged over 18 years who participated in the Australian Health Survey 2011–2013. Demographic and lifestyle characteristics were described by χ2 and t-tests. ANOVA was used to determine the variables that significantly predicted BMI and sleep duration. Stepwise regression analyses were performed to determine the strongest significant predictors of BMI. Sleep duration was self-reported; BMI was calculated from measurement. Results: The study revealed two main findings: (i) short sleep duration was an independent predictor of obesity (adjusted-R2 = 0.056, p <0.0001); and (ii) controlling for sleep duration and other possible confounders, Indigenous status was a significant predictor of BMI overweight/obesity. Sleep duration played a weak, partial mediator role in this relationship. Increased BMI was associated with lower socioeconomic status and level of disadvantage of household locality for non-remote Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Conclusion: Indigenous status strongly predicted increased BMI. The effect was not mediated by the socioeconomic indicators but was partially mediated by sleep duration

Science Advances, 7(8), (2021): eabf3792, https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abf3792.Coral reefs were traditionally perceived as productive hot spots in oligotrophic waters. While modern evidence indicates that many coral reef food webs are heavily subsidized by planktonic production, the pathways through which this occurs remain unresolved. We used the analytical power of carbon isotope analysis of essential amino acids to distinguish between alternative carbon pathways supporting four key reef predators across an oceanic atoll. This technique separates benthic versus planktonic inputs, further identifying two distinct planktonic pathways (nearshore reef-associated plankton and offshore pelagic plankton), and revealing that these reef predators are overwhelmingly sustained by offshore pelagic sources rather than by reef sources (including reef-associated plankton). Notably, pelagic reliance did not vary between species or reef habitats, emphasizing that allochthonous energetic subsidies may have system-wide importance. These results help explain how coral reefs maintain exceptional productivity in apparently nutrient-poor tropical settings, but also emphasize their susceptibility to future ocean productivity fluctuations.Sample analysis funding was provided by NERC LSMSF grant BRIS/102/0717 and BRIS/125/1418.     The influence of vibration transducer mounting on the practical measurement of railway vibration

    When assessing ground-borne vibration related to railways, careful consideration needs to be given to the mounting and coupling of the transducers. This paper presents the results of research investigating some of these fundamental issues. Different couplant materials and four of the most commonly used transducer-to-ground coupling techniques (spikes, buried, slabs, and the transducer directly plastered to the ground), were compared and analysed within the frequency range 5 Hz to 500 Hz. The data demonstrate that transducer vertical alignment has limited influence at small angles. “Blu-tack” showed to be an adequate couplant. Above 50 Hz coupling systems can influence the reading by up to 20 dB. Using the train as a source of vibration yields a high degree of non-linearity on the coupling systems performance

    Issues and limitations on measuring building’s transfer function

    In the planning stages for new buildings or transit systems, the effects of railway induced ground-borne vibration need to be considered. The propagation of vibration from the ground to a receiving room is a complex problem. It is common practise, within vibration assessment, for the buildings vibration response to be acquired empirically by ether measuring the response of the building in question via an impact method, measuring the response on an equivalent type of building, or using pre existing published data (from the 70s and 80s) to derive a ground to building transfer functions. This paper compares, as a method of evaluating a building transfer function, impact method with actual rail pass-bys and recently collected response with published generalised response curves. The results presented suggests that, when using the impact method excitation process (point source), the distance of impact location to the building foundation is critical, drastically affecting the resulting transfer function. In addition when using train pass-bys as the excitation process, train length is shown to have an influence on the transfer function assessed. The pre-published data are also shown to have limitations for more recent types of construction
