The Impact of Silozi Language on the Teaching of Numeracy in the Zambezi Region

    Get PDF
The study reports on the challenges lower primary numeracy teachers in the Zambezi Region face when using Silozi language as a medium of instruction. The use of Silozi language as a medium of instruction is part of the Namibian language policy in schools. In the Zambezi Region, Silozi, a lingua franca is considered predominant. The findings of the study show that teachers were unable to interpret the concepts in the curriculum and learners could not express their ideas using the lingua franca. However, when Numeracy questions were presented to the learners in symbolic form and in their mother tongue, they did not face challenges in understanding the questions. The study uses the socio-cultural theory as theoretical framework

Implementing the National Curriculum Statement in the Further Education and Training Band: Educator’s Experiences in South Africa

Published ArticleThis study examined educators’ experiences in implementing the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) in the Further Education and Training (FET) band (Grades 10-12 schools). A quantitative research approach was used in a survey of a sample of 369 participants. To this end, a questionnaire was used for collecting data. The Chi-square test was used to analyse data and to test the hypotheses of the study. The findings revealed that educators (teachers) differed significantly with regard to their experiences in implementing the NCS. The findings also indicated that gender, age, teaching experience and qualification had no influence on the educators’ experiences in implementing the NCS. The findings further revealed that educators differed in the extent to which they generally found implementing the NCS to be stressful. Furthermore, the findings revealed that except for qualification, educators’ biographical variables (gender, age, and teaching experience) had no significant influence on the extent to which educators generally found implementing the NCS to be stressful

Discovery of novel tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene-3-carbonitriles as histone deacetylase inhibitors

The discovery and development of isoform-selective histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor is a challenging task because of the sequence homology among HDAC enzymes. In the present work, novel tetrahydro benzo[b]thiophene-3-carbonitrile based benzamides were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as HDAC inhibitors. Pharmacophore modeling was our main design strategy, and two novel series of tetrahydro benzo[b]thiophene-3-carbonitrile derivatives with piperidine linker (series 1) and piperazine linker (series 2) were identified as HDAC inhibitors. Among all the synthesised compounds, 9h with 4-(aminomethyl) piperidine linker and 14n with piperazine linker demonstrated good activity against human HDAC1 and HDAC6, respectively. Both the compounds also exhibited good antiproliferative activity against several human cancer cell lines. Both these compounds (9h and 14n) also induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in U937 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cells. Overall, for the first time, this research discovered potent isoform-selective HDAC inhibitors using cyclic linker instead of the aliphatic chain and aromatic ring system, which were reported in known HDAC inhibitors

Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance 2021 cases of SCMR and COVID-19 case collection series

Abstract The Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) is an international society focused on the research, education, and clinical application of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). “Cases of SCMR” is a case series hosted on the SCMR website ( https://www.scmr.org ) that demonstrates the utility and importance of CMR in the clinical diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. The COVID-19 Case Collection highlights the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the heart as demonstrated on CMR. Each case in series consists of the clinical presentation and the role of CMR in diagnosis and guiding clinical management. The cases are all instructive and helpful in the approach to patient management. We present a digital archive of the 2021 Cases of SCMR and the 2020 and 2021 COVID-19 Case Collection series of nine cases as a means of further enhancing the education of those interested in CMR and as a means of more readily identifying these cases using a PubMed or similar literature search engine.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/173834/1/12968_2022_Article_872.pd
