Is procrastination related to sleep quality? Testing an application of the procrastination-health model
Despite a growing body of research on the consequences of procrastination for health and well-being, there is little research focused on testing or explaining the potential links between procrastination and sleep quality. Using the procrastination-health model as our guiding conceptual lens, we addressed this gap by examining how and why trait procrastination may be linked to various dimensions of sleep quality across two student samples. In Study 1, procrastination was associated with feeling unrested, but not sleep disturbance frequency, in a sample of Greek undergraduate students (N = 141). In Study 2, bootstrapping analysis of the indirect effects of procrastination on an index of sleep quality through perceived stress in a sample of Canadian students (N = 339) was significant supporting an extended procrastination-health model view of how chronic self-regulation failure may compromise sleep quality. Given the potential for dynamic and reciprocal relations among procrastination, stress, and sleep quality suggested by the current and other research, the ways in which procrastination may contribute to and be influenced by poor sleep quality warrants further investigation
Driver Drowsiness Immediately before Crashes – A Comparative Investigation of EEG Pattern Recognition
Periodogram and other spectral power estimation methods are established in quantitative EEG analysis. Their outcome in case of drowsy subjects fulfilling a sustained attention task is difficult to interpret. Two novel kind of EEG analysis based on pattern recognition were proposed recently, namely the microsleep (MS) and the alpha burst (AB) pattern recognition. We compare both methods by applying them to the same experimental data and relating their output variables to two independent variables of driver drowsiness. The latter was an objective lane tracking performance variable and the first was a subjective variable of self-experienced sleepiness. Results offer remarkable differences between both EEG analysis methodologies. The expected increase with time since sleep as well as with time on task, which also exhibited in both independent variables, was not identified after applying AB recognition. The EEG immediately before fatigue related crashes contained both patterns. MS patterns were remarkably more frequent before crashes; almost every crash (98.5 %) was preceded by MS patterns, whereas less than 64 % of all crashes had AB patterns within a 10 sec pre-crash interval
Circuit QED scheme for realization of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model
We propose a scheme in which the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model is realized
within a circuit QED system. An array of N superconducting qubits interacts
with a driven cavity mode. In the dispersive regime, the cavity mode is
adiabatically eliminated generating an effective model for the qubits alone.
The characteristic long-range order of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model is here
mediated by the cavity field. For a closed qubit system, the inherent second
order phase transition of the qubits is reflected in the intensity of the
output cavity field. In the broken symmetry phase, the many-body ground state
is highly entangled. Relaxation of the qubits is analyzed within a mean-field
treatment. The second order phase transition is lost, while new bistable

"If Only I Had Done Better": Perfectionism and the Functionality of Counterfactual Thinking
Although a recent update on the functional theory of counterfactual thinking suggests that counterfactuals are important for behavior regulation, there is some evidence that counterfactuals may not be functional for everyone. Two studies found differences between maladaptive and high personal standards perfectionism in the functionality of counterfactuals and variables relevant to behavior regulation. Maladaptive but not personal standards perfectionism predicted making more upward counterfactuals after recalling a negative event and was linked to a variety of negative markers of achievement. Maladaptive perfectionism was associated with making controllable, subtractive, and less specific counterfactuals. High personal standards perfectionism moderated the effects of maladaptive perfectionism on counterfactual controllability. Generating counterfactuals increased motivation for personal standards perfectionists relative to a noncounterfactual control group but had no effect on motivation for maladaptive perfectionists. The findings suggest a continuum of counterfactual functionality for perfectionists and highlight the importance of considering counterfactual specificity and structure
