    Techniques of Translating Thesis Abstracts of Economics Department Students in Medan State University

    The study deals with the techniques of translation on thesis abstracts inEconomics Department. The objectives of study were to identify the types oftranslation techniques, to find out the most dominant type of translationtechniques used, and to describe the reasons of the translation techniques used intranslating thesis abstract. The study used descriptive qualitative design.Nazir(1998: 34) states that descriptive qualitative is a method of research thatmakes the description of the situation of events or occurrences clearer. It isunderstood that descriptive qualitative is a method of research which provides thedescription of situation, events or occurrences, so this method is an intention toaccumulate the basic data. Qualitative research involves analysis of data such aswords and phrases written in abstracts. The data were taken from twentytranslated thesis abstracts of Economic Department. The findings show that therewere eight techniques of eighteen techniques used in thesis abstracts. The mostdominant type of translation techniques was established equivalent due to thetranslator intention to avoid misunderstanding by using the dictionaries andparticular equivalent known by target language. It is recommended that in doingany translation, the most essential thing is to keep the meaning or the message ofthe source language remains the same when it is being translated into the targetlanguage

    Violated Maxim in Oz: the Great and Powerful Movie

    The objectives of this research were discovered the kinds of maxims and the dominant maxim; to explain the implication of the dominant maxim and to describe the context of situation in OZ: the Great and Powerful Movie. This research was done on OZ\u27s utterances because he is the only main character. There were 38 of violated maxims gathered as the data for this research. The descriptive qualitative design was used to analyze the data. The results of the analysis showed that all kinds of maxims were violated: 18 utterances violated maxim of quantity (48%), 2 utterances violated maxim of qualiy (6%), 12 utterances violated maxim of relation (13%), and 6 utterances violated maxim of manner (13). The maxim of quantity is the dominant kind of maxims that was violated by OZ. The implication of this violated maxim is the main character has worried about his life story and he try to covered his truthfull and tricky. The context of situation of this violated maxim is the main character who cannot hide his true story from his friend

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model pembeljaran investigasi kelompok (Group Investigation) untuk mempresentasikan hasil penelitian oleh siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 2 Sungai Kanan tahun pembelajaran 2013/2014. Metode Yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah motode eksperimen dengan desain post tesl only design group dengan sampel kelas ekperimen yang diberikan model investigasi kelompok (Group Ivestigation) berjumlah 36 orang dan sampel kelas kontrol yang tamnpa menggunakan model investigasi kelompok (Group Investigation) berjumlah 36 orang yang berasl dari populasi seluruh kelas XI SMA Negeri 2 Sungai Kanan Tahun Pembelajaran 2013/2014. Nilai rata-rata keterampilan mempresentasikan hasil penelitian dengan model investigasi kelompok (Group Investigation) adalah sebesar 84,66 dan standar deviasi 9,53. Nilai rata-rata keterampilan mempresentasikan hasil penelitian tanpa model investigasi kelompok (Group Investigation) adalah sebesar 74,94 dan standar deviasi 8,26. Hasil penelitian yang dilakukan dengan uji “t” pada sampel yang berdistribusi normal dan homogen diperoleh to sebesar 4,87 dan ttabel pada taraf signifikasi 0,05 sebesar 1,99. Jadi to > ttabel (4,87 > 1,99) maka, Ho ditolak dan Ha diterima. Dengan demikian model investigasi kelompok (Group Investigation) memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap keterampilan mempresentasikan hasil penelitian siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 2 Sungai Kanan Tahun Pembelajaran 2013 2014
