Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the buccal mucosa: A rare clinical presentation

    Get PDF
Of malignant tumors with a propensity to invade the perineural space, adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands is perhaps a well-known entity. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, slow growing malignant salivary gland tumor that is characterized by indolent, locally invasive  growth with high propensity for local recurrence and distant metastasis. Upto 50% of these tumors occur in the intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate. Buccal mucosal tumors are relatively rare. The purpose of this article is to discuss an unusual case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the buccal mucosa and review the pertinent literature

Evaluation Of The Complications Associated With ORIF In The Management Of Mandibular Fractures- A 7 Years Retrospective Study

Aim: This study is intended to evaluate the incidence of post-operative complications associated with ORIF in the management of mandibular fracturesMaterials and Method: A total of 224 patients who were diagnosed clinically and radiographically to have sustained mandibular fractures and were managed with ORIF between the period of June 2012 to May 2019 were included. Patient’s records were analysed to evaluate the incidence of post-operative complications that are associated with ORIF in the management of mandibular fractures. Results: It was observed that patients who underwent ORIF for the management of condylar fractures reported with relatively higher number of complications when compared to mandibular angle / body / parasymphysis fractures. Wound dehiscence, occlusal disturbance, paresthesia and infection leading to the removal of miniplates in general are the notable complications following ORIF.Conclusion: It can be concluded that the most common complications associated with ORIF in the management of mandibular fractures were majorly due to the surgical approach used than the type of fixation devices/techniques

Meniscopexy for Internal Derangement of Temporomandibular Joint

    No full text
The term internal derangement was first adopted to describe any pathologic entity that interfered with the smooth function of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The term is currently used exclusively to describe alterations in disc–fossa relations. Internal derangement of the TMJ does not always cause pain, although when the disc becomes displaced, noises and locking can occur and ligamentous, capsular or retrodiscal pain may dominate the clinical picture. Meniscopexy of TMJ was done in ten patients where clinical features suggest true internal derangement of the TMJ refractory to conservative treatment with restricted movement and pain identified as arising primarily from the joint. Magnetic resonance imaging was done to identify the cause of problem

Hemimasticatory Spasm: A Case Report with a New Management Strategy

    No full text
Hemimasticatory spasm is a rare neuromuscular disorder where the patient experiences involuntary, painful spasm of muscles of mastication. Only 15 cases have been reported in literature. We present a case which was treated unconventionally with satisfactory outcome

    Low-Grade Osteosarcoma of the Mandible

Osteosarcoma (OS), a rare malignant bone tumour arising from primitive bone forming mesenchyme, most often arises in the metaphyses of long bones of the extremities. Bone or osteoid formation within the tumour is characteristic of an osteosarcoma. Craniofacial osteosarcoma (CFOS), most often located in the mandible or maxilla, accounts for only 5–13% of all osteosarcomas. In general, OS of the jaw is a high-grade lesion. Low-grade lesions are rare and represent less than 2% of all osteosarcomas reported in the literature. Because of its rarity and well differentiation, Low-grade OS is usually misdiagnosed as a benign lesion. The clinical and radiographic presentation does not correlate well with the subtle histology picture of a low-grade osteosarcoma which makes the diagnosis difficult
