    Strategic Human Resource Management: Three-Stage Process and Influencing Organisational Factors

    A three-stage model for the process of strategic human resource management is developed in this paper. The three stages cover strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation. The inter-linkages in this dynamic model have been explored. The organisational factors that have enabling or deterring influence on the success of each of these three stages have been discussed. The paper highlights the key role played by HR professionals in these three stages.

    Comparative study of magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Sm0.55Sr0.45MnO3 thin films grown on different substrates

    Highly oriented polycrystalline SSMO thin films deposited on single crystal substrates by ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis have been studied. The film on LAO is under compressive strain while LSAT and STO are under tensile strain. The presence of a metamagnetic state akin to cluster glass formed due to coexisting FM and antiferromagnetic/charge order (AFM/CO) clusters. All the films show colossal magnetoresistance but its temperature and magnetic field dependence are drastically different. In the lower temperature region the magnetic field dependent isothermal resistivity also shows signature of metamagnetic transitions. The observed results have been explained in terms of the variation of the relative fractions of the coexisting FM and AFM/CO phases as a function of the substrate induced strain and oxygen vacancy induced quenched disorder.Comment: 21 page

    Studies on enantioselective allylic oxidation of olefins using peresters catalyzed by Cu(I)-complexes of chiral pybox ligands

    Enantioselective allylic oxidation of olefins with various peresters, using a catalytic amount of Cu(I)-pybox complex, can be tuned to achieve high asymmetric induction (up to 98% ee) by choosing a unique combination of a ligand and a perester at room temperature. The asymmetric induction in the reaction strongly depends on the nature of the substituents attached to the aryl ring of peresters. The presence of a gem-diphenyl group at C-5 and secondary or tertiary alkyl substituents at the chiral center (C-4) of the oxazoline rings is crucial for high enantioselectivity. A π–π stacking model has been proposed and discussed to explain the stereochemical outcome of the reaction

    Issues and Concerns in the Implementation and Maintenance of HRIS

    The paper looks at the issues and concerns faced by nine Indian organisations in implementing and managing HRIS. The organisations are diverse in terms of size and sector that they belong. The critical success factors and weaknesses in various stages of implementing an HRIS are explored in the paper. The problems are rooted in mainly two factors. One is the fact that HR department lacks knowledge about HRIS and hence is not able to clearly elucidate the requirements of the system. Poor need assessment is a continuation of this problem. Second is the lack of importance given to HR department in the organisations. The spectrum of cases covered shows the clear variation in terms of the success of implementation. In poorly managed implementations, the potential of HRIS has been under-utilised. Only a few modules have been implemented and at best HRIS’s role is that of a centralised database. Very high dependence is placed on the vendors without having a clear idea about how to select vendors or a proper process or contract to ensure vendors’ accountability. Another area of concern is that level of cooperation needed across various functions and divisions of the organisation for proper implementation of HRIS is also lacking. User satisfaction is low because there is minimal user involvement in the implementation project and the implemented package is not user-friendly.

    Isolation, characterization and morphological study of Azotobacter isolates

    Among the diazotrops, great attention has been paid to the genus Azotobacter and its role in increasing the growth and health of plants. In the present study, forty two strains of Azotobacter were isolated from soil. These strains were purified and characterized through microscopical and biochemical test for cell shape, pigmentation, colony size, Gram reaction and catalase activity were identified as Azotobacter sp These strains showed wide variability to these characters. Among 42 isolates, 7 were single cocci, 7 coccidal chain and 4 were cocci in clumps. Majority of isolates i.e. 24, were small, medium and large rod shaped. Thirty two isolates were Gram –ve, catalase positive and 10 were Gram +ve, catalase negative. Finally from these isolates, twenty two were confirmed as Azotobacter strains on cyst formation. The carbon-source utilization pattern revealed that out of 22 strains that 16 strains resembled the characters of A. chroococcum, 3 matched with A. vinelandii and 3 with A. beijerinckii. All 22 isolates were analyzed for its nitrogen fixing ability by using Microkjeldhal method. The highest amount of N2 (18.88 mg g-1 sucrose) was fixed by Azo-SBT 72 while lowest (6.04 mg g-1 sucrose) by Azo-SUR 25 strain. However, injudicious and hazardous use of chemical fertilizers have degraded the soil health and there is need of ecofriendly management of soil by screening and hunting of potential nitrogen fixing strains to protect the soil environment and health. In this context, biofertilizers hunting natural environment is the need of soil to ensure better health of future generations

    Initial conditions from the shadowed Glauber model

    The two component Monte-Carlo Glauber model predicts a knee-like structure in the centrality dependence of elliptic flow v2v_2 in Uranium+Uranium collisions at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{NN}}=193 GeV. It also produces a strong anti-correlation between v2v_2 and dNch/dydN_{ch}/dy in the case of top ZDC events. However, none of these features have been observed in data. We address these discrepancies by including the effect of nucleon shadowing to the two component Monte-Carlo Glauber model. Apart from addressing successfully the above issues, we find that the nucleon shadow suppresses the event by event fluctuation of various quantities, e.g. ε2\varepsilon_2 which is in accordance with expectation from the dynamical models of initial condition based on gluon saturation physics.Comment: version accepted for publication in Physics Letters
