Emotionally Contentious Social Movements: A Tri-Variate Framework

    Get PDF
After decades of seeing emotions as irrational and unimportant, scholars in social movements are beginning to value the role of emotions in social movements. This paper contributes to the burgeoning literature on emotions and contentious politics by proposing a synthesized tri-variate framework called the “emotional tripod.” The emotional tripod consists of three mutually constitutive “legs” that explain the origins of emotions (emotional habitus), the process of intensifying and transforming emotions (emotional effervescence) and the quality of the emotions generated (affective/reactive emotions). This paper empiricizes the framework by looking at the visual materials produced by PETA. Lastly, this paper briefly critiques the efficacy of emotions in generating collective action

A Review Essay: The Sexuality of Migration: Border Crossings and Mexican Immigrant Men (2009) by Lionel Lionel CantĂș Jr. and edited by Nancy A. Naples and Salvador Vidal-Ortiz

Queering the Political Economy of Migration: Identities, Space and BordersThis book sees a dialectic relationship between macro level forces such as the global market and micro level processes such as identity formation in which the interaction between the two constitutes sexuality, and sexuality in turn shapes those macro and micro level processes. As the authors write, “sexuality, as a dimension of power, shapes and organizes processes of migration and modes of incorporation. In turn, the contextual and structural transitions that mark the migration experience impacts the way in which identities are formed” (p21). This mutually constitutive relationship is what the authors call the “queer political economy of migration.

Report on health costs associated with active tobacco use

    Get PDF
Findings support program intervention to combat the tobacco epidemic in Cambodia; the research also provides a baseline for documenting changes in cost of smoking and for monitoring implementation of provisions of tobacco control legislation and relevant Articles of the WHO Framework Convention. The study examined costs related to smoking for both male and female (age 30 and over) including health care costs and productivity loss. The costs of treating tobacco related diseases and associated productivity loss is much higher than the tobacco domestic tax revenue (13,825,230 USD), whereas the total health care cost for treating the five diseases attributable to smoking was 34.5 million USD (2013)

Effects of crystallinity and point defects on optoelectronic applications of ÎČ-Ga2O3 epilayers

    Get PDF
This study evaluates the effect of crystallinity and point defects on time-dependent photoresponsivity and the cathodoluminescence (CL) properties of ÎČ-Ga2O3 epilayers. A synchrotron high-resolution X-ray technique was used to understand the crystalline structure of samples. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy was used to determine the net chemical composition of the samples to examine the type and ratio of their possible point defects. The results show that in functional time-dependent photoresponsivity of photodetectors based on ÎČ-Ga2O3 epilayers, point defects contribution overcomes the contribution of crystallinity. However, the crystalline structure affects the intensities and emission regions of CL spectra more than point defects

Performance of InGaN Light-Emitting Diodes Fabricated on Patterned Sapphire Substrates with Modified Top-Tip Cone Shapes

    Get PDF
InGaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated on cone-shaped patterned sapphire substrates (PSSs) by using low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. To enhance the crystal quality of the GaN epilayer and the optoelectronic performance of the LED device, the top-tip cone shapes of the PSSs were further modified using wet etching. Through the wet etching treatment, some dry-etched induced damage on the substrate surface formed in the PSS fabrication process can be removed to achieve a high epilayer quality. In comparison to the LEDs prepared on the conventional sapphire substrate (CSS) and cone-shaped PSS without wet etching, the LED grown on the cone-shaped PSS by performing wet etching for 3 min exhibited 55% and 10% improvements in the light output power (at 350 mA), respectively. This implies that the modification of cone-shaped PSSs possesses high potential for LED applications
