Calculating and Using Second Order Accurate Solutions of Discrete Time Dynamic Equilibrium Models
We describe an algorithm for calculating second order approximations to the solutions to nonlinear stochastic rational expectations models. The paper also explains methods for using such an approximate solution to generate forecasts, simulated time paths for the model, and evaluations of expected welfare differences across different versions of a model. The paper gives conditions for local validity of the approximation that allow for disturbance distributions with unbounded support and allow for non-stationarity of the solution process.

RAISE Special Interest Groups (Early Career Researchers and Research & Evaluation) Collaboration: A Case Study
In the academic year 2022/23, the RAISE Special Interest Groups for Early Career Researchers and Research & Evaluation collaboratively developed a professional development programme for HE colleagues new to writing about student engagement. The diverse audience ranged from Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to colleagues new to academic writing including those interested in writing about Student Engagement. The programme featured three online events (alongside virtual on-demand support) covering themes around barriers and challenges to publication; enabling collaboration and co-creation across institutional/disciplinary contexts and the opportunity to participate in an academic writing workshop. This case study will present an account of the process and experiences of delivering these events looking into the barriers and challenges experienced by ECRs, the community-based, peer-learning approach adopted (CoPs) to address these with the aim to facilitate the publication process and make it more inclusive and accessible for (a diverse range of) participants. The example is framed and contextualised through relevant literature and a wider higher education backdrop of work-life balance, principles of staff-student partnership and a ‘publish or perish’ culture
Evolution of London penetration depth with scattering in single crystals of KNaFeAs
London penetration depth, , was measured in single crystals of
KNaFeAs, =0 and 0.07, down to temperatures of 50~mK,
. Isovalent substitution of Na for K significantly increases
impurity scattering, with rising from 0.2 to 2.2 cm,
and leads to a suppression of from 3.5~K to 2.8~K. At the same time, a
close to -linear in pure samples changes to almost
in the substituted samples. The behavior never becomes exponential as
expected for the accidental nodes, as opposed to dependence in
superconductors with symmetry imposed line nodes. The superfluid density in the
full temperature range follows a simple clean and dirty -wave dependence,
for pure and substituted samples, respectively. This result contradicts
suggestions of multi-band scenarios with strongly different gap structure on
four sheets of the Fermi surface

The Beagle landing site in Isidis Planitia
The Mars probe Beagle 2 will land in Isidis Planitia. This region satisfies the engineering constraints and has evidence for particularly volatile-rich subsoil. Isidis provides a suitable place for the lander to search for H2O and organic matter
Hierarchical shrinkage in time-varying parameter models
In this paper, we forecast EU-area inflation with many predictors using time-varying parameter models. The facts that time-varying parameter models are parameter-rich and the time span of our data is relatively short motivate a desire for shrinkage. In constant coefficient regression models, the Bayesian Lasso is gaining increasing popularity as an effective tool for achieving such shrinkage. In this paper, we develop econometric methods for using the Bayesian Lasso with time-varying parameter models. Our approach allows for the coefficient on each predictor to be: i) time varying, ii) constant over time or iii) shrunk to zero. The econometric methodology decides automatically which category each coefficient belongs in. Our empirical results indicate the benefits of such an approach
THE INTERNATIONAL TRANSMISSION OF VOLATILITY SHOCKS: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS
This paper proposes an empirical model which can be used to estimate the international transmission of volatility shocks. Using this model we estimate that a one standard deviation increase in the volatility of the shock to US real GDP leads to a decline in UK GDP of 1% relative to trend and a 0.7% increase in UK CPI relative to trend at the two‐year horizon. Using a nonlinear open‐economy DSGE model, we find that these empirical estimates are consistent with the response to a perturbation to the volatility of foreign “supply” type shocks, while an increase in the volatility of demand shocks has a negligible impact
Impact of the repurposed drug thonzonium bromide on host oral-gut microbiomes
Drug repurposing is a feasible strategy for the development of novel therapeutic applications. However, its potential use for oral
treatments and impact on host microbiota remain underexplored. Here, we assessed the influences of topical oral applications of a
repurposed FDA-approved drug, thonzonium bromide, on gastrointestinal microbiomes and host tissues in a rat model of dental
caries designed to reduce cross-contamination associated with coprophagy. Using this model, we recapitulated the body site
microbiota that mirrored the human microbiome profile. Oral microbiota was perturbed by the treatments with specific disruption
of Rothia and Veillonella without affecting the global composition of the fecal microbiome. However, disturbances in the oral-gut
microbial interactions were identified using nestedness and machine learning, showing increased sharing of oral taxon Sutterella in
the gut microbiota. Host-tissue analyses revealed caries reduction on teeth by thonzonium bromide without cytotoxic effects,
indicating bioactivity and biocompatibility when used orally. Altogether, we demonstrate how an oral treatment using a
repurposed drug causes localized microbial disturbances and therapeutic effects while promoting turnover of specific oral species
in the lower gut in vivo
