Exercise-induced whole-body dehydration does not affect airway responsiveness in athletes but may impair small airway function
Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is the transient narrowing of the airways that occurs during or shortly after strenuous exercise. Loss of water from the airway surface, due to the conditioning of large volumes of air during exercise, is the main physiological stimulus for EIB. We proposed that exercise-induced whole-body dehydration would interfere with hydration of the airways and, consequently, increase the risk and/or severity of EIB. We also investigated the effects of whole-body dehydration on resting lung function
Surface properties of Galilean satellites from bistatic radar experiments
The icy moons of Jupiter were the first to show unusual radar backscatter behavior in Earth-based experiments. Studies of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto revealed strong echoes and a reversed sense of circular polarization. No explanations were entirely satisfactory because of the difficult constraints imposed by the existing data. The (scalar) bidirectional coherence model predicts an opposition effect, or enhancement in the backscatter direction, resulting from coherent addition of backscatter from identical (but oppositely directed) ray paths. The mode decoupling model yields a similar, vector result in which the observed polarization properties of the backscattered wave can also be obtained. The possibilities were considered for conducting such experiments using the Galileo spacecraft. Both conventional oblique-forward bistatic experiments (to determine basic electrical and physical properties of the surface material on centimeter-meter scales) and near-backscatter experiments (to sample the enhanced backscatter lobe) were considered
Determining the Dependence Structure of Multivariate Extremes
In multivariate extreme value analysis, the nature of the extremal dependence
between variables should be considered when selecting appropriate statistical
models. Interest often lies with determining which subsets of variables can
take their largest values simultaneously, while the others are of smaller
order. Our approach to this problem exploits hidden regular variation
properties on a collection of non-standard cones and provides a new set of
indices that reveal aspects of the extremal dependence structure not available
through existing measures of dependence. We derive theoretical properties of
these indices, demonstrate their value through a series of examples, and
develop methods of inference that also estimate the proportion of extremal mass
associated with each cone. We apply the methods to UK river flows, estimating
the probabilities of different subsets of sites being large simultaneously
Understanding co-operative R&D activity: evidence from four European countries
This paper investigates co-operative research activity by firms using data from
the 3rd Community Innovation Survey for four countries, France, Germany, Spain and the
UK. We build on the Cassiman and Veugelers (CV) (2002) study of Belgian manufacturing
firms, by incorporating information on the service sector, and considering the role of public
support in affecting firms’ decisions to co-operate. Our results support those in CV, in that
we find a positive relationship between the likelihood of undertaking co-operative R&D
and both incoming knowledge spillovers and the extent to which firms find strategic
methods important in appropriating the returns to innovative activity. We find that public
support is positively related to the probability of undertaking co-operative agreements
particularly with regard to the likelihood of co-operation with the research base. We find
some evidence, in particular for Spain, that firms carry out co-operative R&D to overcome
excessive perceived risks and financial constraints

An interprofessional, intercultural, immersive short-term study abroad program: public health and service systems in rome
The purpose of this paper is to describe a short-term study abroad program that exposes engineering and nursing undergraduate students from the United States and Italy to an intercultural and interprofessional immersion experience. Faculty from Purdue University and Sapienza UniversitĂ di Roma collaborated to design a technical program that demonstrates the complementary nature of engineering and public health in the service sector, with Rome as an integral component of the program. Specifically, the intersection of topics including systems, reliability, process flow, maintenance management, and public health are covered through online lectures, in-class activities and case study discussions, field experiences, and assessments. Herein, administrative issues such as student recruitment, selection, and preparation are elucidated. Additionally, the pedagogical approach used to ensure constructive alignment among the program goals, the intended learning outcomes, and the teaching and learning activities is described. Finally, examples of learning outcomes resulting from this alignment are provided
Experimental study of two separating turbulent boundary layers
A detailed study of two strong adverse pressure gradient flows, one with a free-stream velocity of 35 m/sec, at throat (producing a Re sub theta of 27000 at detachment) and another with free-stream velocity of 22 m/sec, at throat (producing a Re sub theta of 19000 at detachment) is presented. In these examples flows separate slowly and reattach very rapidly over a very short distance in a streamwise direction. In the backflow region, there appears to be a semi-logarithmically flat region in the streamwise fluctuating velocity component, u', which spreads over a definite range of y/delta. In power spectra, the flow variables phi sub upsilon upsilon (kappa sub 1 delta)/ -uv bar sub max vs. kappa sub 1 delta forms a unique set of scaling parameters for adverse pressure gradient flows. Experimental results show good agreement with previous studies
