    Student effort and educational attainment: Using the England football team to identify the education production function.

    We use a sharp, exogenous and repeated change in the value of leisure to identify the impact of student effort on educational achievement. The treatment arises from the partial overlap of the world’s major international football tournaments with the exam period in England. Our data enable a clean difference-in-difference design. Performance is measured using the high-stakes tests that all students take at the end of compulsory schooling. We find a strongly significant effect: the average impact of a fall in effort is 0.12 SDs of student performance, significantly larger for male and disadvantaged students, as high as many educational policies.student effort, educational achievement, schools

    Removal of disinfection by-product precursors by coagulation and an innovative suspended ion exchange process

    This investigation aimed to compare the disinfection by-product formation potentials (DBPFPs) of three UK surface waters (1 upland reservoir and 2 lowland rivers) with differing characteristics treated by (a) a full scale conventional process and (b) pilot scale processes using a novel suspended ion exchange (SIX) process and inline coagulation (ILCA) followed by ceramic membrane filtration (CMF). Liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection analysis highlighted clear differences between the organic fractions removed by coagulation and suspended ion exchange. Pretreatments which combined SIX and coagulation resulted in significant reductions in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV absorbance (UVA), trihalomethane and haloacetic acid formation potential (THMFP, HAAFP), in comparison with the SIX or coagulation process alone. Further experiments showed that in addition to greater overall DOC removal, the processes also reduced the concentration of brominated DBPs and selectively removed organic compounds with high DBPFP. The SIX/ILCA/CMF process resulted in additional removals of DOC, UVA, THMFP, HAAFP and brominated DBPs of 50, 62, 62, 62% and 47% respectively compared with conventional treatment

    Interpolation and the Exchange Rule

    It was proved by Maksimova in 1977 that exactly eight varieties of Heyting algebras have the amalgamation property, and hence exactly eight axiomatic extensions of intuitionistic propositional logic have the deductive interpolation property. The prevalence of the deductive interpolation property for axiomatic extensions of substructural logics and the amalgamation property for varieties of pointed residuated lattices, their equivalent algebraic semantics, is far less well understood, however. Taking as our starting point a formulation of intuitionistic propositional logic as the full Lambek calculus with exchange, weakening, and contraction, we investigate the role of the exchange rule--algebraically, the commutativity law--in determining the scope of these properties. First, we show that there are continuum-many varieties of idempotent semilinear residuated lattices that have the amalgamation property and contain non-commutative members, and hence continuum-many axiomatic extensions of the corresponding logic that have the deductive interpolation property in which exchange is not derivable. We then show that, in contrast, exactly sixty varieties of commutative idempotent semilinear residuated lattices have the amalgamation property, and hence exactly sixty axiomatic extensions of the corresponding logic with exchange have the deductive interpolation property. From this latter result, it follows also that there are exactly sixty varieties of commutative idempotent semilinear residuated lattices whose first-order theories have a model completion

    Shorter juvenile telomere length is associated with higher survival to spawning in migratory Atlantic salmon

    The risk of mortality associated with a long-distance migration will depend on an animal's physiological state, as well as the prevailing ecological conditions. Here we assess whether juvenile telomere length, which in endotherms has been shown to be a biomarker of physiological state and expected lifespan, predicts whether wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar successfully complete their marine migration. Over 1800 juvenile fish were trapped, measured, PIT-tagged and a tissue biopsy taken when migrating as juveniles down-river towards the sea. Survivors of the marine phase of the life cycle were then re-trapped and re-sampled when returning to the river to spawn as sexually mature adults, 1.5-2.5 years later. Most individuals experienced a reduction in telomere length during the marine migratory phase of their life cycle. While the relative rate of telomere loss was greater in males than females, telomere loss was unrelated to growth at sea. Contrary to expectations, salmon that had the shortest telomeres at the time of the outward migration had the greatest probability of surviving through to the return migration. This effect, independent of body size, may indicate a trade-off between investment in readiness for marine life (which favours high glucocorticoid levels, known to increase telomere attrition in other vertebrate species) and investment in telomere maintenance. Survival was also significantly influenced by the seasonal timing of outward migration, with the fish migrating downstream earliest in the spring having the highest probability of return. This study reveals that telomere length is associated with survival, although in ways that contrast with patterns seen in endotherms.     Communal land reform in Zambia: governance, livelihood and conservation

    Magister Philosophiae (Land and Agrarian Studies) - MPhil(LAS)Communal land tenure reform in Zambia is the overarching subject of study in this thesis. It is an important issue across southern Africa, raising questions of governance, livelihood security and conservation. WIldlife is a 'fugitive' and 'mobile' resource that traverses the spatially fixed tenure of communal lands, national parks and public forest reserves. The management of wildlife therefore requires that spatially defined proprietorial rights accommodate wildlife's temporal forage use. Land may bebounded in tenure, but if bounded by fences its utility as wildlife habitat is undermined. If land is unfenced, but its landholder cannot use wildlife then it is more a liability than an asset. Africa's terrestrial wildlife has enormous biodiversity value but its mobility requires management collaboration throughout its range, and the resolution of conflicting ecological and economic management scales. The paper does not aim to describe and explain the internal communal system of tenure over land and natural resources but rather how the communal system interacts with the state and the private sector.South Afric

    Deciding Equations in the Time Warp Algebra

    Join-preserving maps on the discrete time scale ω+\omega^+, referred to as time warps, have been proposed as graded modalities that can be used to quantify the growth of information in the course of program execution. The set of time warps forms a simple distributive involutive residuated lattice -- called the time warp algebra -- that is equipped with residual operations relevant to potential applications. In this paper, we show that although the time warp algebra generates a variety that lacks the finite model property, it nevertheless has a decidable equational theory. We also describe an implementation of a procedure for deciding equations in this algebra, written in the OCaml programming language, that makes use of the Z3 theorem prover

    Graded modalities have been proposed in recent work on programming languages as a general framework for refining type systems with intensional properties. In particular, continuous endomaps of the discrete time scale, or time warps, can be used to quantify the growth of information in the course of program execution. Time warps form a complete residuated lattice, with the residuals playing an important role in potential programming applications. In this paper, we study the algebraic structure of time warps, and prove that their equational theory is decidable, a necessary condition for their use in real-world compilers. We also describe how our universal-algebraic proof technique lends itself to a constraint-based implementation, establishing a new link between universal algebra and verification technology.Comment: Submitted to a conferenc

    Pre-treatment of surface waters for ceramic microfiltration

    The influence of pre-treatment on the suppression of irreversible (IR) fouling of ceramic membranes challenged with three UK surface waters has been studied at pilot scale. An initial scoping study compared the efficacy of suspended ion exchange (SIX) and clarification (coagulation followed by sludge blanket clarification) individually and in combination. Direct membrane filtration following in-line coagulation (ILCA) was also investigated with and without SIX. The impact on the various organic fractions, specifically high molecular weight (HMW) biopolymers (BPs) and humic substances (HSs), and lower molecular weight (LMW) building blocks (BBs) and neutrals, was studied using liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD). Results revealed SIX and coagulation to preferentially remove the LMW and HMW organic fractions respectively. Residual HMW organic matter (primarily BPs) following SIX pre-treatment were retained by the membrane which led to rapid irreversible fouling. Coagulation pre-treatment provided stable membrane operation and the residual LMW organics were not significantly retained by the membrane. Combining clarification and SIX resulted in significantly increased removal of organics and lower membrane fouling rates. Tests performed using SIX and ILCA revealed high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal compared to SIX with clarification. However, unlike the case for clarification with SIX, the addition of SIX to optimised ILCA dosing offered no additional suppression of membrane fouling compared to ILCA alone. Optimised ILCA pretreatment led to very low IR fouling rates of <0.3 kPa/day trans-membrane pressure, despite highly challenging operating conditions of elevated fluxes (185 L m−2 h−1) and highly variable feedwater dissolved organic carbon concentrations
