Distributed Relay Protocol for Probabilistic Information-Theoretic Security in a Randomly-Compromised Network
We introduce a simple, practical approach with probabilistic
information-theoretic security to mitigate one of quantum key distribution's
major limitations: the short maximum transmission distance (~200 km) possible
with present day technology. Our scheme uses classical secret sharing
techniques to allow secure transmission over long distances through a network
containing randomly-distributed compromised nodes. The protocol provides
arbitrarily high confidence in the security of the protocol, with modest
scaling of resource costs with improvement of the security parameter. Although
some types of failure are undetectable, users can take preemptive measures to

Solar Magnetic Carpet I: Simulation of Synthetic Magnetograms
This paper describes a new 2D model for the photospheric evolution of the
magnetic carpet. It is the first in a series of papers working towards
constructing a realistic 3D non-potential model for the interaction of
small-scale solar magnetic fields. In the model, the basic evolution of the
magnetic elements is governed by a supergranular flow profile. In addition,
magnetic elements may evolve through the processes of emergence, cancellation,
coalescence and fragmentation. Model parameters for the emergence of bipoles
are based upon the results of observational studies. Using this model, several
simulations are considered, where the range of flux with which bipoles may
emerge is varied. In all cases the model quickly reaches a steady state where
the rates of emergence and cancellation balance. Analysis of the resulting
magnetic field shows that we reproduce observed quantities such as the flux
distribution, mean field, cancellation rates, photospheric recycle time and a
magnetic network. As expected, the simulation matches observations more closely
when a larger, and consequently more realistic, range of emerging flux values
is allowed (4e16 - 1e19 Mx). The model best reproduces the current observed
properties of the magnetic carpet when we take the minimum absolute flux for
emerging bipoles to be 4e16 Mx. In future, this 2D model will be used as an

Exomoon simulations
We introduce and describe our newly developed code that simulates light
curves and radial velocity curves for arbitrary transiting exoplanets with a
satellite. The most important feature of the program is the calculation of
radial velocity curves and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect in such systems. We
discuss the possibilities for detecting the exomoons taking the abilities of
Extremely Large Telescopes into account. We show that satellites may be
detected also by their RM effect in the future, probably using less accurate
measurements than promised by the current instrumental developments. Thus, RM

Situationally edited empathy: an effect of socio-economic structure on individual choice
Criminological theory still operates with deficient models of the offender as agent, and of social influences on the agent’s decision-making process. This paper takes one ‘emotion’, empathy, which is theoretically of considerable importance in influencing the choices made by agents; particularly those involving criminal or otherwise harmful action. Using a framework not of rational action, but of ‘rationalised action’, the paper considers some of the effects on individual psychology of social, economic, political and cultural structure. It is suggested that the climate-setting effects of these structures promote normative definitions of social situations which allow unempathic, harmful action to be rationalised through the situational editing of empathy. The ‘crime is normal’ argument can therefore be extended to include the recognition that the uncompassionate state of mind of the criminal actor is a reflection of the self-interested values which govern non-criminal action in wider society
Plane waves with weak singularities
We study a class of time dependent solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations
which are plane waves with weak null singularities. This singularity is weak in
the sense that though the tidal forces diverge at the singularity, the rate of
divergence is such that the distortion suffered by a freely falling observer
remains finite. Among such weak singular plane waves there is a sub-class which
do not exhibit large back reaction in the presence of test scalar probes.
String propagation in these backgrounds is smooth and there is a natural way to
continue the metric beyond the singularity. This continued metric admits string
propagation without the string becoming infinitely excited. We construct a one
parameter family of smooth metrics which are at a finite distance in the space
of metrics from the extended metric and a well defined operator in the string

Subdiffusive transport in intergranular lanes on the Sun. The Leighton model revisited
In this paper we consider a random motion of magnetic bright points (MBP)
associated with magnetic fields at the solar photosphere. The MBP transport in
the short time range [0-20 minutes] has a subdiffusive character as the
magnetic flux tends to accumulate at sinks of the flow field. Such a behavior
can be rigorously described in the framework of a continuous time random walk
leading to the fractional Fokker-Planck dynamics. This formalism, applied for
the analysis of the solar subdiffusion of magnetic fields, generalizes the

Changes in bottlenose dolphin whistle parameters related to vessel presence, surface behaviour and group composition
Cetacean watching from tour boats has increased in recent years and has been promoted as an ethically
viable alternative to cetacean viewing in captive facilities or directed take. However, short- and longterm
impacts of this industry on the behaviour and energetic expenditure of cetaceans have been
documented. Although multiple studies have investigated the acoustic response of dolphins to marine
tourism, there are several covariates that could also explain some of these results and should be
considered simultaneously. Here, we investigated whether common bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops
truncatus, inhabiting Walvis Bay, Namibia vary their whistle parameters in relation to boat presence,
surface behaviour and/or group composition. We detected an upward shift of up to 1.99 kHz in several
whistle frequency parameters when dolphins were in the presence of one or more tour boats and the
research vessel. No changes were demonstrated in the frequency range, number of inflection points or
duration of whistles. A similar, although less pronounced difference was observed in response to engine
noise generated by the research vessel when idling, suggesting that noise alone plays an important role
in driving this shift in whistle frequency. Additionally, a strong effect of surface behaviour was observed,
with the greatest difference in whistle parameters detected between resting and other behavioural states
that are associated with higher degrees of emotional arousal. Group composition also contributed to the
variation observed, with the impact of boats dependent on whether calves were present or not. Overall
these results demonstrate high natural variation in the frequency parameters of whistles utilized by
dolphins over varying behavioural states and group composition. Anthropogenic impact in the form of
marine tour boats can influence the vocalization parameters of dolphins and such changes could have a

Small scale energy release driven by supergranular flows on the quiet Sun
In this article we present data and modelling for the quiet Sun that strongly suggest a ubiquitous small-scale atmospheric heating mechanism that is driven solely by converging supergranular flows.
A possible energy source for such events is the power transfer to the plasma via the work done on the magnetic field by photospheric convective flows, which exert drag of the footpoints of magnetic structures. In this paper we present evidence of small scale energy release events driven directly by the hydrodynamic forces that act on the magnetic elements in the photosphere, as a result of supergranular scale flows. We show strong spatial and temporal correlation between quiet Sun soft X-ray emission (from <i>Yohkoh</i> and <i>SOHO</i> MDI-derived flux removal events driven by deduced photospheric flows.
We also present a simple model of heating generated by flux submergence, based on particle acceleration by converging magnetic mirrors.
In the near future, high resolution soft X-ray images from XRT on the <i>Hinode</i> satellite will allow definitive, quantitative verification of our results
The discontinuous nature of chromospheric activity evolution
Chromospheric activity has been thought to decay smoothly with time and,
hence, to be a viable age indicator. Measurements in solar type stars in open
clusters seem to point to a different conclusion: chromospheric activity
undergoes a fast transition from Hyades level to that of the Sun after about 1
Gyr of main--sequence lifetime and any decaying trend before or after this
