A2_9 None Like It Hot
This paper looks into the use of a Hohmann transfer to help combat global warming by moving the Earth further away from the Sun to reduce its surface temperature. It was found that the total delta-v required to move the Earth from its current orbit to one which would lower the temperature by 1.1 oC, would be 117.5 ms-1
A2_3 Maximising Income
This paper looks at the income mechanic of the video game Starcraft II. We look at the optimum number of workers to have mining at one mineral patch at any one time. This optimum number depends on the type of minerals being mined, but is 2.4 for blue mineral patches, and 2.5 for gold mineral patches
A2_6 Tubular Travel
This paper looks at whether it would be possible to use pneumatic tubes as a transport system for humans, similar to that shown in the cartoon series Futurama. We looked at the pressure required to push a human through a tube horizontally, assuming the only force resisting their movement was air resistance. The pressure required was found to be 90.1 kPa (0.89 Atm)
A2_4 Low Earth Orbit - A Tragedy of the Commons?
The increasing number of satellites and orbital debris in low Earth orbit is considered as a form of a 'tragedy of the commons'. This is assessed and analysed using game theory. Some solutions to the problem are suggested
