An optimized tuned mass damper/harvester device
Much work has been conducted on vibration absorbers, such as tuned mass dampers (TMD), where significant energy is extracted from a structure. Traditionally, this energy is dissipated through the devices as heat. In this paper, the concept of recovering some of this energy electrically and reuse it for structural control or health monitoring is investigated. The energy-dissipating damper of a TMD is replaced with an electromagnetic device in order to transform mechanical vibration into electrical energy. That gives the possibility of controlled damping force whilst generating useful electrical energy. Both analytical and experimental results from an adaptive and a semi-active tuned mass damper/harvester are presented. The obtained results suggest that sufficient energy might be harvested for the device to tune itself to optimise vibration suppression
Jamming in finite systems: stability, anisotropy, fluctuations and scaling
Athermal packings of soft repulsive spheres exhibit a sharp jamming
transition in the thermodynamic limit. Upon further compression, various
structural and mechanical properties display clean power-law behavior over many
decades in pressure. As with any phase transition, the rounding of such
behavior in finite systems close to the transition plays an important role in
understanding the nature of the transition itself. The situation for jamming is
surprisingly rich: the assumption that jammed packings are isotropic is only
strictly true in the large-size limit, and finite-size has a profound effect on
the very meaning of jamming. Here, we provide a comprehensive numerical study
of finite-size effects in sphere packings above the jamming transition,
focusing on stability as well as the scaling of the contact number and the

Existence of immersed spheres minimizing curvature functionals in compact 3-manifolds
We study curvature functionals for immersed 2-spheres in a compact,
three-dimensional Riemannian manifold M. Under the assumption that the
sectional curvature of M is strictly positive, we prove the existence of a
smoothly immersed sphere minimizing the L^{2} integral of the second
fundamental form. Assuming instead that the sectional curvature is less than or
equal to 2, and that there exists a point in M with scalar curvature bigger
than 6, we obtain a smooth 2-sphere minimizing the integral of 1/4|H|^{2} +1,
where H is the mean curvature vector
The Effect of Input DNA Copy Number on Genotype Call and Characterising SNP Markers in the Humpback Whale Genome Using a Nanofluidic Array
Recent advances in nanofluidic technologies have enabled the use of Integrated Fluidic Circuits (IFCs) for high-throughput Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) genotyping (GT). In this study, we implemented and validated a relatively low cost nanofluidic system for SNP-GT with and without Specific Target Amplification (STA). As proof of principle, we first validated the effect of input DNA copy number on genotype call rate using well characterised, digital PCR (dPCR) quantified human genomic DNA samples and then implemented the validated method to genotype 45 SNPs in the humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, nuclear genome. When STA was not incorporated, for a homozygous human DNA sample, reaction chambers containing, on average 9 to 97 copies, showed 100% call rate and accuracy. Below 9 copies, the call rate decreased, and at one copy it was 40%. For a heterozygous human DNA sample, the call rate decreased from 100% to 21% when predicted copies per reaction chamber decreased from 38 copies to one copy. The tightness of genotype clusters on a scatter plot also decreased. In contrast, when the same samples were subjected to STA prior to genotyping a call rate and a call accuracy of 100% were achieved. Our results demonstrate that low input DNA copy number affects the quality of data generated, in particular for a heterozygous sample. Similar to human genomic DNA, a call rate and a call accuracy of 100% was achieved with whale genomic DNA samples following multiplex STA using either 15 or 45 SNP-GT assays. These calls were 100% concordant with their true genotypes determined by an independent method, suggesting that the nanofluidic system is a reliable platform for executing call rates with high accuracy and concordance in genomic sequences derived from biological tissue
Genetic associations of novel behaviour traits derived from social network analysis with growth, feed efficiency, and carcass characteristics in pigs
Reducing harmful aggressive behaviour remains a major challenge in pig production. Social network analysis (SNA) showed the potential in providing novel behavioural traits that describe the direct and indirect role of individual pigs in pen-level aggression. Our objectives were to (1) estimate the genetic parameters of these SNA traits, and (2) quantify the genetic associations between the SNA traits and commonly used performance measures: growth, feed intake, feed efficiency, and carcass traits. The animals were video recorded for 24 h post-mixing. The observed fighting behaviour of each animal was used as input for the SNA. A Bayesian approach was performed to estimate the genetic parameters of SNA traits and their association with the performance traits. The heritability estimates for all SNA traits ranged from 0.01 to 0.35. The genetic correlations between SNA and performance traits were non-significant, except for weighted degree with hot carcass weight, and for both betweenness and closeness centrality with test daily gain, final body weight, and hot carcass weight. Our results suggest that SNA traits are amenable for selective breeding. Integrating these traits with other behaviour and performance traits may potentially help in building up future strategies for simultaneously improving welfare and performance in commercial pig farms
