Metal-insulator transition in disordered 2DEG including temperature effects
We calculate self-consistently the mutual dependence of electron correlations
and electron-defect scattering for a two dimensional electron gas at finite
temperature. We employ an STLS approach to calculate the electron correlations
while the electron scattering rate off Coulombic impurities and surface
roughness is calculated using self-consistent current-relaxation theory. The
methods are combined and self-consistently solved. We discuss a metal-insulator
transition for a range of disorder levels and electron densities. Our results
are in good agreement with recent experimental observations.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX + epsf, 5 figure
Compressibility of a two-dimensional hole gas in tilted magnetic field
We have measured compressibility of a two-dimensional hole gas in
p-GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, grown on a (100) surface, in the presence of a
tilted magnetic field. It turns out that the parallel component of magnetic
field affects neither the spin splitting nor the density of states. We conclude
that: (a) g-factor in the parallel magnetic field is nearly zero in this
system; and (b) the level of the disorder potential is not sensitive to the
parallel component of the magnetic field
Interatomic potentials for atomistic simulations of the Ti-Al system
Semi-empirical interatomic potentials have been developed for Al, alpha-Ti,
and gamma-TiAl within the embedded atomic method (EAM) by fitting to a large
database of experimental as well as ab-initio data. The ab-initio calculations
were performed by the linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within the
density functional theory to obtain the equations of state for a number of
crystal structures of the Ti-Al system. Some of the calculated LAPW energies
were used for fitting the potentials while others for examining their quality.
The potentials correctly predict the equilibrium crystal structures of the
phases and accurately reproduce their basic lattice properties. The potentials
are applied to calculate the energies of point defects, surfaces, planar faults
in the equilibrium structures. Unlike earlier EAM potentials for the Ti-Al
system, the proposed potentials provide reasonable description of the lattice
thermal expansion, demonstrating their usefulness in the molecular dynamics or
Monte Carlo studies at high temperatures. The energy along the tetragonal
deformation path (Bain transformation) in gamma-TiAl calculated with the EAM
potential is in a fairly good agreement with LAPW calculations. Equilibrium
point defect concentrations in gamma-TiAl are studied using the EAM potential.
It is found that antisite defects strongly dominate over vacancies at all
compositions around stoichiometry, indicating that gamm-TiAl is an antisite

New polarimetric constraints on axion-like particles
We show that the parameter space of axion-like particles can be severly
constrained using high-precision measurements of quasar polarisations. Robust
limits are derived from the measured bounds on optical circular polarisation
and from the distribution of linear polarisations of quasars. As an outlook,
this technique can be improved by the observation of objects located behind
clusters of galaxies, using upcoming space-borne X-ray polarimeters.Comment: Submitted to JCA
Comparison of three wet-alkaline methods of digestion of biogenic silica in water
Methods for determination of low levels of biogenic silica (0.2–0.4 mg SiO 2 ) in aqueous samples after digestion with three wetalkaline extraction procedures compared favourably in both precision of replicates and recovery of silica utilized by diatoms in budgeted cultures. Leaching samples with 0.2 M NaOH for 10–15 min at 100°C was the least time consuming procedure. Also interference from silicate minerals was lower for this method than leaching with either 0.5 or 5% Na 2 CO 3 for 2 h at 85°C. The use of filters to concentrate samples enables detection of low levels of biogenic silica with colorimetric procedures. Polycarbonate filters are recommended in preference to cellulose acetate or polyvinyl chloride filters for sample collection. Time-course experiments are recommended for establishing digestion times and determining the presence of mineral silicate interference. Wet-alkaline digestion methods are recommended for routine analysis of biogenic silica in suspended matter in preference to infra-red analysis, alkaline fusion and hydrofluoric acid/nitric acid methods.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/74725/1/j.1365-2427.1983.tb00658.x.pd
Persistence of W135 Neisseria meningitidis Carriage in Returning Hajj Pilgrims: Risk for Early and Late Transmission to Household Contacts
After an outbreak of meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis W135, associated with the Hajj pilgrimage in 2001, 15% of returning vaccinated pilgrims carried a single W135 clone, and 55% were still carriers 6 months later. Transmission to 8% of their unvaccinated household contacts occurred within a few weeks, but no late transmission took place. Public health interventions are needed to protect household contacts
Fragments of equality in representative politics
Deploying a broadly interpretive approach, the article explores the extent to which, and the ways in which, equality is enacted in non-elective as well as elective representation. It argues that the fleeting and fragmentary equalities evident in non-elective representation are democratically significant, and that examining them can enhance understanding of the democratic promise and limits of different modes of representation
