    Credit and banking in a DSGE model of the euro area

    This paper studies the role of credit-supply factors in business cycle fluctuations. For this purpose, we introduce an imperfectly competitive banking sector into a DSGE model with financial frictions. Banks issue collateralized loans to both households and firms, obtain funding via deposits and accumulate capital from retained earnings. Margins charged on loans depend on bank capital-to-assets ratios and on the degree of interest rate stickiness. Bank balance-sheet constraints establish a link between the business cycle, which affects bank profits and thus capital, and the supply and cost of loans. The model is estimated with Bayesian techniques using data for the euro area. The analysis delivers the following results. First, the existence of a banking sector partially attenuates the effects of demand shocks, while it helps propagate supply shocks. Second, shocks originating in the banking sector explain the largest share of the fall of output in 2008 in the euro area, while macroeconomic shocks played a limited role.     Design and performance of ropes for climbing and sailing

    Ropes are an important part of the equipment used by climbers, mountaineers, and sailors. On first inspection, most modern polymer ropes appear similar, and it might be assumed that their designs, construction, and properties are governed by the same requirements. In reality, the properties required of climbing ropes are dominated by the requirement that they effectively absorb and dissipate the energy of the falling climber, in a manner that it does not transmit more than a critical amount of force to his body. This requirement is met by the use of ropes with relatively low longitudinal stiffness. In contrast, most sailing ropes require high stiffness values to maximize their effectiveness and enable sailors to control sails and equipment precisely. These conflicting requirements led to the use of different classes of materials and different construction methods for the two sports. This paper reviews in detail the use of ropes, the properties required, manufacturing techniques and materials utilized, and the effect of service conditions on the performance of ropes. A survey of research that has been carried out in the field reveals what progress has been made in the development of these essential components and identifies where further work may yield benefits in the future

    Credit demand and supply in Italy during the financial crisis

    The paper analyzes developments in bank lending in Italy during the financial crisis, assessing the relative contribution of demand and supply factors to lending deceleration. We find that the slowdown in lending was mainly due to a reduction in demand. For households, this can be attributed to the weakness of the real estate market and to the fall in consumption; for firms, a diminution in financing needs, due in turn to the sharp contraction of investment. Credit market indicators and empirical studies suggest that lending growth may also have been curbed by tensions in credit supply. These tensions mainly reflected the increase in borrower risk, as well as the impact of the crisis – especially in its first phase – on banks’ capital, liquidity, and ability to access external funding. Econometric analyses corroborate these indications, suggesting that the overall impact of banks’ conditions on the lending slowdown was modest. Over the next few months, supply tensions could persist, but the risk of a limitation of credit will be moderated by the economic recovery and the consequent reduction in borrower default risk. There will also be support from public interventions, which have provided financial support to firms, improving their creditworthiness, and strengthened banks’ capital and liquidity position.credit demand and supply, financial crisis, Italian economy.

    An assessment of financial sector rescue programmes

    We analyse the wide array of rescue programmes adopted in several countries, following Lehman Brothers’ default in September 2008, in order to support banks and other financial institutions. We first provide an overview of the programmes, comparing their characteristics, magnitudes and participation rates across countries. We then consider the effects of the programmes on banks’ risk and valuation, looking at the behaviour of CDS premia and stock prices. We then proceed to analyse the issuance of government guaranteed bonds by banks, examining their impact on banks’ funding and highlighting undesired effects and distortions. Finally, we briefly review the recent evolution of bank lending to the private sector.     p63 Promotes Cell Survival through Fatty Acid Synthase

    There is increasing evidence that p63, and specifically ΔNp63, plays a central role in both development and tumorigenesis by promoting epithelial cell survival. However, few studies have addressed the molecular mechanisms through which such important function is exerted. Fatty acid synthase (FASN), a key enzyme that synthesizes long-chain fatty acids and is involved in both embryogenesis and cancer, has been recently proposed as a direct target of p53 family members, including p63 and p73. Here we show that knockdown of either total or ΔN-specific p63 isoforms in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC9) or immortalized prostate epithelial (iPrEC) cells caused a decrease in cell viability by inducing apoptosis without affecting the cell cycle. p63 silencing significantly reduced both the expression and the activity of FASN. Importantly, stable overexpression of either FASN or myristoylated AKT (myr-AKT) was able to partially rescue cells from cell death induced by p63 silencing. FASN induced AKT phosphorylation and a significant reduction in cell viability was observed when FASN-overexpressing SCC9 cells were treated with an AKT inhibitor after p63 knockdown, indicating that AKT plays a major role in FASN-mediated survival. Activated AKT did not cause any alteration in the FASN protein levels but induced its activity, suggesting that the rescue from apoptosis documented in the p63-silenced cells expressing myr-AKT cells may be partially mediated by FASN. Finally, we demonstrated that p63 and FASN expression are positively associated in clinical squamous cell carcinoma samples as well as in the developing prostate. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that FASN is a functionally relevant target of p63 and is required for mediating its pro-survival effects

    Objective with this review discuss the importance of proper adjustment of the particle size at harvest of corn silage and the use or non use of inoculants. Silages have received greater emphasis by the ranchers, by requiring simple technology and provide excellent results, with the confection less limited by climatic factors compared with haying. The particle sizes can contribute to changes in the fermentation of silage by means of different densities in the silo, this may also cause changes in chewing activities and performance of ruminant animals. The fermentation in the silo is a complex and dynamic process that is affected by variety of factors inherent to the management therefore has intensified the use of bacterial inoculants to accelerate the fermentation of forage ensure low losses during the unloading process. There is still a large space for research to elucidate the effect of setting the true effects in particle size associated with the use of bacterial inoculants in relation to the silo environment and mainly as animal performance.El objetivo de la presente revisión es discutir sobre la importancia del ajuste adecuado del tamaño de partícula en el momento de la colecta de la planta de maíz al ser ensilada y del uso o no de inoculante bacteriano. Los ensilajes han sido ampliamente utilizados por los ganaderos por exigir tecnologías simples y presentar resultados satisfactorios, ya que esta tecnología de conservación es menos dependiente de factores climåticos, en comparación al heno. El tamaño de corte de las partículas puede causar modificaciones en la fermentación de la masa ensilada, a través de diferentes densidades obtenidas en el silo, lo que a su vez puede provocar modificaciones en la actividad masticatoria e en el desempeño de los rumiantes. La fermentación en el silo es un proceso complejo y dinåmico que es afectado por una gran variedad de factores inherentes al manejo, por eso, se ha intensificado el uso de inoculantes bacterianos para acelerar la fermentación del forraje y disminuir las pérdidas durante el proceso de descargue. Todavía existe un gran espacio para investigar sobre los verdaderos efectos del ajuste en el tamaño de partícula asociada al uso de inoculantes bacterianos, tanto en lo que se refiere al ambiente del silo como al desempeño animal

    Regulation of TCL1 expression in B- and T-cell lymphomas and reactive lymphoid tissues

    Chromosomal rearrangements observed in T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia involve the translocation of one T-cell receptor gene to either chromosome 14q32 or Xq28, deregulating the expression of cellular proto-oncogenes of unknown function, such as TCL1 or its homologue, MTCP1. In the human hematopoietic system, TCL1 expression is predominantly observed in developing B lymphocytes, whereas its overexpression in T cells causes mature T-cell proliferation in transgenic mice. In this study, using a newly generated monoclonal antibody against recombinant TCL1 protein, we extended our analysis mainly by immunohistochemistry and also by fluorescence-activated cell sorting and Western blot to a large tumor lymphoma data bank including 194 cases of lymphoproliferative disorders of B- and T-cell origin as well as reactive lymphoid tissues. The results obtained show that in reactive lymphoid tissues, TCL1 is strongly expressed by a subset of mantle zone B lymphocytes and is expressed to a lesser extent by follicle center cells and by scattered interfollicular small lymphocytes. In B-cell neoplasia, TCL1 was expressed in the majority of the cases, including lymphoblastic lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, Burkitt lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (60%), and primary cutaneous B cell lymphoma (55%). TCL1 expression was observed in both the cytoplasmic and nuclear compartments, as confirmed by Western blot analysis. Conversely, TCL1 was not expressed in Hodgkin/Reed-Sternberg cells, multiple myelomas, marginal zone B-cell lymphomas, CD30+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma, lymphoblastic T-cell lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, and mycosis fungoides. These data indicate that TCL1 is expressed in more differentiated B cells, under both reactive and neoplastic conditions, from antigen committed B cells and in germinal center B cells and is down-regulated in the latest stage of B-cell differentiation

    Decrease in n-acetylaspartate following concussion may be coupled to decrease in creatine

    Objectives: To assess the time course changes in brain N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and creatine (Cr) in athletes who suffered a sport-related concussion. Participants: Eleven non-consecutive concussed athletes and 11 sex and age-matched control volunteers. Main outcome measures: At 3, 15, 30 and 45 days post-injury, athletes were examined by proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) for the determination of NAA,(Cr) and choline (Cho). 1H-MRS data recorded in the control group were used for comparison. Results: Compared to controls (2.18 ± 0.19), athletes showed an NAA/Cr increase at 3 (2.71 ± 0.16; p < 0.01) and 15 days (2.54 ± 0.21; p < 0.01), followed by a decrease and subsequent normalization at 30 (1.95 ± 0.16, p < 0.05) and 45 days(2.17 ± 0.20; p <0.05) post-concussion. NAA/Cho decreased at 3, 15 and 30 days post-injury (p < 0.01 compared to controls), with no differences from controls at 45 days post-concussion. Significant increase in the Cho/Cr after 3 (+33%, p < 0.01) and 15 (+31.5%, p < 0.01) days post-injury was observed, whilst no differences compared to controls were recorded at 30 and 45 days post-impact. Conclusions: This cohort of athletes indicates that concussion may cause concomitant decrease in cerebral NAA and Cr. This occurrence provokes longer time of metabolism normalization, as well as longer resolution time of concussion-associated clinical symptoms
