Lubrication of high-speed, large bore tapered-roller bearings
The performance of 120.65-mm- (4.75-in.-) bore tapered-roller bearings was investigated at shaft speeds up to 15,000 rpm (18,000 DN). Temperature distribution and bearing heat generation were determined as a function of shaft speed, radial and thrust loads, lubricant flow rate, and lubricant inlet temperature. Lubricant was supplied either by jets or by a combination of holes through the cone directly to the cone-rib contact and jets at the roller small-end side. Cone-rib lubrication significantly improved high-speed tapered-roller bearing performance, yielding lower cone-face temperatures and lower power loss and allowing lower lubricant flow rates for a given speed condition. Bearing temperatures increased with increased shaft speed and decreased with increased lubricant flow rate. Bearing power loss increased with increased shaft speed and increased lubricant flow rate

Performance tests with a 4.75 inch bore tapered-roller bearings at high speeds
The tapered-roller bearings were tested at speeds to 15,000 rpm which results in a cone-rib tangential velocity of 130 m/sec. (25,500 ft/min). Lubrication was applied either by jets or directly to the cone-rib, augmented with jets. Additional test parameters included thrust loads to 53,400 N (12,000 lbs), radial loads to 26,700 N (6,000 lbs), lubricant flow rates from 1.9 x 0.000 to 15.1 x 0.001 cubic meter/min. (0.5 to 4.0 gpm), and lubricant inlet temperatures of 350 K and 364 K (170 F and 195 F). Temperature distribution, separator speed, and drive-motor power demand were determined as functions of these test parameters
Performance of jet- and inner-ring-lubricated 35 millimeter bore ball bearings operating to 2.5 million DN
Parametric tests were conducted with a 35 millimeter bore, angular contact ball bearing having a single outer land guided cage. Lubrication was achieved by flowing oil through axial grooves and radial holes machined in the inner ring of the bearing. Test conditions were a thrust load of 667 N (150 lb), shaft speeds from 48,000 to 72,000 rpm, and an oil inlet temperature of 394 K (250 F). Data from tests where the distribution of the total oil supplied to the inner ring was 50 percent for bearing lubrication and 50 percent for bearing inner ring cooling were compared with those where the distribution pattern was 25 percent lubrication and 75 percent cooling. Successful operation was experienced with both the 50-50 and 25-75 percent flow distribution patterns to 2.5 million DN. The 50-50 percent flow pattern provided the cooler bearing operation of the two inner ring lubricated bearings. The jet lubricated bearing had lower outer ring and higher inner ring temperatures than the inner ring lubricated bearings. Maximum power loss of 2.8 kW (3.7 hp) was experienced with the 25-75 percent flow distribution, and maximum percent cage slip of 7.0 occurred at 72,300 rpm with the 50-50 percent flow distribution

The performance of 120.65 mm bore high speed design tapered roller bearings was investigated at shaft speeds to 20,000 rpm under combined thrust and radial load. The test bearing design was computer optimized for high speed operation. Temperature distribution and bearing heat generation were determined as a function of shaft speed, radial and thrust loads, lubricant flow rates, and lubricant inlet temperature. The roller bearing operated successfully at shaft speeds up to 20,000 rpm under heavy thrust and radial loads. Cup cooling was effective in decreasing the high cup temperatures to levels equal to the cone temperature
Endurance tests with large-bore tapered-roller bearings to 2.2 million DN
Endurance life tests were run with standard design and optimized high-speed design 120.65-mm-(4.750-in.-) bore tapered-roller bearings at shaft speeds of 12,500 and 18,500 rpm, respectively. Standard design bearings of vacuum melted AISI 4320 and CBS-1000M, and high-speed design bearings of CBS-1000M and through-hardened AISI M-50 were run under heavy combined radial and thrust load until fatigue failure or until a preset cutoff time of 1100 hours was reached. Standard design bearings made from CBS 1000M material ran to a 10 percent life approximately six times rated catalog life. Twelve identical bearings of AISI 4320 material ran to ten times rated catalog life without failure. Cracking and fracture of the cones of AISI M-50 high-speed design bearings occurred at 18,500 rpm due to high tensile hoop stresses. Four CBS 1000M high-speed design bearings ran to twenty-four times rated catalog life without any spalling, cracking or fracture failures

The test bearing design was computer optimized for high speed operation. Temperature distribution bearing heat generation were determined as a function of shaft speed, radial and thrust loads, lubricant flow rates, and lubricant inlet temperature. The high speed design, tapered roller bearing operated successfully at shaft speeds up to 20,000 rpm under heavy thrust and radial loads. Bearing temperatures and heat generation with the high speed design bearing were significantly less than those of a modified standard bearing tested previously. Cup cooling was effective in decreasing the high cup temperatures to levels equal to the cone temperature
Nitrogen and noble gases in the 71501 bulk soil and ilmenite as records of the solar wind exposure: Which is correct?
The N determination in mg sized mineral separates from lunar soils by static mass spectrometry is an experimental break-through likely to contribute to the deciphering of the records left in the mineral grains by the exposure to the solar wind. In this discussion some comparisons of the results of N and noble gas analyses of the 71501 bulk soil and an ilmenite separate thereof are focussed on. Conclusions from noble gas data obtained on mineral separates from some 20 soils are summarized in a companion paper and are also discussed herein
SCR and GCR exposure ages of plagioclase grains from lunar soil
The concentrations of solar wind implanted Ar-36 in mineral grains extracted from lunar soils show that they were exposed to the solar wind on the lunar surface for an integrated time of 10E4 to 10E5 years. From the bulk soil 61501 plagioclase separates of 8 grain size ranges was prepared. The depletion of the implanted gases was achieved by etching aliquot samples of 4 grain sizes to various degrees. The experimental results pertinent to the present discussion are: The spallogenic Ne is, as in most plagioclases from lunar soils, affected by diffusive losses and of no use. The Ar-36 of solar wind origin amounts to (2030 + or - 100) x 10E-8 ccSTP/g in the 150 to 200 mm size fraction and shows that these grains were exposed to the solar wind for at least 10,000 years. The Ne-21/Ne-22 ratio of the spallogenic Ne is 0.75 + or - 0.01 and in very good agreement with the value of this ratio in a plagioclase separate from rock 76535. This rock has had a simple exposure history and its plagioclases have a chemical composition quite similar to those studied. In addition to the noble gases, the heavy particle tracks in an aliquot of the 150 to 200 mm plagioclase separate were investigated and found 92% of the grains to contain more than 10E8 tracks/sq cm. This corresponds to a mean track density of (5 + or - 1) x 10E8 tracks/sq cm. The exploration of the exposure history of the plagioclase separates from the soil 61501 do not contradict the model for the regolith dynamics but also fail to prove it
Experimental ball bearing dynamics study
A photographic method was employed to record the kinematic performance of rolling elements in turbo machinery ball bearings. The 110 mm split inner ring test bearings had nominal contact angles of 26 deg and 34 deg. High speed films were taken at inner ring speeds of 4,000, 8,000 and 12,000 rpm and at thrust loads of 4,448 N and 22,240 N (1,000 and 5,000 lbs). The films were measured and this data reduced to obtain separator speed, ball speed and ball spin axis orientation
