Subcritical Superstrings
We introduce the Liouville mode into the Green-Schwarz superstring. Like
massive supersymmetry without central charges, there is no kappa symmetry.
However, the second-class constraints (and corresponding Wess-Zumino term)
remain, and can be solved by (twisted) chiral superspace in dimensions D=4 and
6. The matter conformal anomaly is c = 4-D < 1. It thus can be canceled for
physical dimensions by the usual Liouville methods, unlike the bosonic string

Evaluation of propellent tank insulation concepts for low-thrust chemical propulsion systems: Executive summary
Cryogenic propellant tank insulations or liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen low-thrust 2224N (500 lbf) propulsion systems (LTPS) were assessed. The insulation studied consisted of combinations of N2-purged foam and multilayer insulation (MLI) as well as He-purged MLI-only. Heat leak and payload performance predictions were made for three shuttle-launched LTPS designed for shuttle bay packaged payload densities of 56 kg cu/m (3.5 lbm/cu ft), 40 kg/cu m (2.5 lbm/cu ft) and 24 kg/cu m (1.5 lbm/cu ft). Foam/MLI insulations were found to increase LTPS payload delivery capability when compared with He-purged MLI-only. An additional benefit of foam/MLI was reduced operational complexity because orbiter cargo bay N2 purge gas could be used for MLI purging. Maximum payload mass benefit occurred when an enhanced convection, rather than natural convection, heat transfer was specified for the insulation purge enclosure. The enhanced convection environment allowed minimum insulation thickness to be used for the foam/MLI interface temperature selected to correspond to the moisture dew point in the N2 purge gas. Experimental verification of foam/MLI benefits was recommended. A conservative program cost estimate for testing a MLI-foam insulated tank was 2.1 million dollars. This cost could be reduced significantly without increasing program risk
Closed String Amplitudes from Gauge Fixed String Field Theory
Closed string diagrams are derived from cubic open string field theory using
a gauge fixed kinetic operator. The basic idea is to use a string propagator
that does not generate a boundary to the world sheet. Using this propagator and
the closed string vertex, the moduli space of closed string surfaces is
covered, so closed string scattering amplitudes should be reproduced. This
kinetic operator could be a gauge fixed form of the string field theory action

Neuregulin induces GABA A receptor β 2 subunit expression in cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons by activating multiple signaling pathways
The GABA A receptor β subunit is required to confer sensitivity to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. In previous studies we demonstrated that the growth and differentiation factor neuregulin 1 (NRG1) selectively induced expression of the β2 subunit mRNA and encoded protein in rat cerebellar granule neurons in culture. In the present report we examine the signaling pathways that mediate this effect. These studies demonstrate that the effects of NRG1 on β2 subunit polypeptide expression require activation of the ErbB4 receptor tyrosine kinase; its effects are inhibited by pharmacological blockade of ErbB4 phosphorylation or reduction of receptor level with an antisense oligodeoxynucleotide. The NRG1-induced activation of ErbB4 stimulates the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and cyclin-dependent kinase-5 (cdk5) pathways. Pharmacological blockade of any of these pathways inhibits increased β2 subunit expression, demonstrating that all three pathways are required to mediate the effects of NRG1 on GABA A receptor subunit expression in cerebellar granule neurons. On parity functions in conformal field theories
We examine general aspects of parity functions arising in rational conformal
field theories, as a result of Galois theoretic properties of modular
transformations. We focus more specifically on parity functions associated with
affine Lie algebras, for which we give two efficient formulas. We investigate

Non-ideal artificial phase discontinuity in long Josephson 0-kappa-junctions
We investigate the creation of an arbitrary -discontinuity of the
Josephson phase in a long Nb-AlO_x-Nb Josephson junction (LJJ) using a pair of
tiny current injectors, and study the formation of fractional vortices formed
at this discontinuity. The current I_inj, flowing from one injector to the
other, creates a phase discontinuity kappa ~ I_inj. The calibration of
injectors is discussed in detail. The small but finite size of injectors leads
to some deviations of the properties of such a 0-kappa-LJJ from the properties
of a LJJ with an ideal kappa-discontinuity. These experimentally observed
deviations in the dependence of the critical current on I_inj$ and magnetic
field can be well reproduced by numerical simulation assuming a finite injector
