Anti-reflective surfaces: Cascading nano/microstructuring

    No full text
The creation of anti-reflective surfaces is reliant on the engineering of the surface textures and patterns to enable efficient trapping or transmission of light. Here we demonstrate anti-reflective layers composed of hierarchical nano/microscale features that are prepared on Si using a combination of wet and dry etching processes, and which are both scalable and affordable. The performance of the structured surfaces was tested through optical measurements of the reflectance, transmittance, and scattering spectra from the visible to mid-infrared wavelength regions, and the results were verified using numerical simulations to identify the performance of the textured anti-reflective layers. The anti-reflective properties of the layers were shown to be dramatically improved by the composite nanostructured surfaces over a broad spectral range, which thus provides a basis for the design rules that are essential for the progress towards effective anti-reflector fabrication. At normal incidence, the hierarchical surfaces achieve reflectances that are 10–80 times lower than that of conventional single-etch nano-microstructures. Portions of the absorbed, transmitted, scattered, and reflected light in the visible-IR spectrum are presented to illustrate the results

革新的材料設計手法により超長寿命2次電池開発に成功 -多数の高精度計算データを活用して材料開発を大幅に加速-. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2014-07-30.Large-scale battery systems are essential for efficiently utilizing renewable energy power sources from solar and wind, which can generate electricity only intermittently. The use of lithium-ion batteries to store the generated energy is one solution. A long cycle life is critical for lithium-ion battery when used in these applications; this is different from portable devices which require 1, 000 cycles at most. Here we demonstrate a novel co-substituted lithium iron phosphate cathode with estimated 70%-capacity retention of 25, 000 cycles. This is found by exploring a wide chemical compositional space using density functional theory calculations. Relative volume change of a compound between fully lithiated and delithiated conditions is used as the descriptor for the cycle life. On the basis of the results of the screening, synthesis of selected materials is targeted. Single-phase samples with the required chemical composition are successfully made by an epoxide-mediated sol-gel method. The optimized materials show excellent cycle-life performance as lithium-ion battery cathodes

Characterization of chicken interferon-inducible transmembrane protein-10

Interferon-inducible transmembrane protein (IFITM) family proteins are antivirus factors. In the present study, we examined the expression pattern of chicken IFITM10 using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. In adult chickens, IFITM10 levels were markedly lower than those of IFITM3, which exhibits antivirus activity. On the other hand, IFITM10 was expressed in levels similar to those of IFITM3 in embryonic organs. Primordial germ cells in 2.5-d embryos expressed high levels of IFITM10, which gradually decreased with time. The interferon-α stimulation of embryonic fibroblast cells did not enhance the expression of IFITM10. The forced expression of IFITM10 slightly inhibited the infectivity of the VSV-G-pseudotyped lentiviral vector. Furthermore, cell fusion was inhibited by IFITM10 when HeLa cells transfected with the VSV-G expression vector were treated with low pH buffer. Although it remains unclear whether IFITM10 inhibits viral infections under physiological conditions, these results suggest that chicken IFITM10 exhibits antivirus activity.

Explanation for the graphical abstract (Okuzaki et al.)

Chicken IFITM10 inhibits VSV-G-pseudotyped lentiviral vector infection and VSV-G-mediated cell fusion.</p
