Landau and dynamical instabilities of Bose-Einstein condensates with superfluid flow in a Kronig-Penney potential
We study the elementary excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates in a
one-dimensional periodic potential and discuss the stability of superfluid flow
based on the Kronig-Penney model. We analytically solve the Bogoliubov
equations and calculate the excitation spectrum. The Landau and dynamical
instabilities occur in the first condensate band when the superfluid velocity
exceeds certain critical values, which agrees with the result of condensates in
a sinusoidal potential. It is found that the onset of the Landau instability
coincides with the point where the perfect transmission of low-energy
excitations is forbidden, while the dynamical instability occurs when the
effective mass is negative. It is well known that the condensate band has a
peculiar structure called swallowtail when the periodic potential is shallow
compared to the mean field energy. We find that the upper side of the
swallowtail is dynamically unstable although the excitations have the linear

A photometric survey for Lyalpha-HeII dual emitters: Searching for Population III stars in high-redshift galaxies
We present a new photometric search for high-z galaxies hosting Population
III (PopIII) stars based on deep intermediate-band imaging observations
obtained in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF), by using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru
Telescope. By combining our new data with the existing broad-band and
narrow-band data, we searched for galaxies which emit strongly both in Ly_alpha
and in HeII 1640 (``dual emitters'') that are promising candidates for
PopIII-hosting galaxies, at 3.93<z<4.01 and 4.57<z<4.65. Although we found 10
``dual emitters'', most of them turn out to be [OII]-[OIII] dual emitters or
H_beta-(H_alpha+[NII]) dual emitters at z<1, as inferred from their broad-band
colors and from the ratio of the equivalent widths. No convincing candidate of
Ly_alpha-HeII dual emitter of SFR_PopIII > 2 Msun/yr was found by our
photometric search in 4.03 x 10^5 Mpc^3 in the SDF. This result disfavors low
feedback models for PopIII star clusters, and implies an upper-limit of the
PopIII SFR density of SFRD_PopIII < 5 x 10^-6 Msun/yr/Mpc^3. This new selection
method to search for PopIII-hosting galaxies should be useful in future
narrow-band surveys to achieve the first observational detection of

Microbubble mediated thrombus dissolution with diagnostic ultrasound for the treatment of chronic venous thrombi.
BACKGROUND: Central venous catheter (CVC) thrombi result in significant morbidity in children, and currently available treatments are associated with significant risk. We sought to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of microbubble (MB) enhanced sonothrombolysis for aged CVC associated thrombi in vivo.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A model of chronic indwelling CVC in the low superior vena cava with thrombus in situ was established after feasibility and safety testing in 7 pigs; and subsequently applied for repeated, sonothrombolytic treatments in 9 pigs (total 24 treatments). Baseline intracardiac echocardiography (ICE, 10.5F, Siemens), fluoroscopy and saline flushing confirmed the absence of any pre-existing CVC thrombus. A thrombus was then allowed to form and age over 24 hours. The created thrombus was localized and measured by ICE, and transthoracic image guided high mechanical index (MI) two-dimensional US treatments (1.1-1.7 MI; iE33, Philips) applied intermittently whenever intravenously infused MBs (3% MRX-801; NuVox) were visualized near the thrombus (n = 10; Group A). Control pigs (n = 10; Group B) received US without MB. All treatments were randomized. Post-treatment thrombus area by ICE planimetry was compared with pre-treatment measurements. Thrombus area measurements before and after treatment were 0.22 and 0.10 cm(2) respectively in Group A; compared to 0.24 and 0.21 cm(2) in Group B (p  = 0.0003). Effectiveness of longer duration US and MB thrombolytic treatments were studied (n = 4), which suggested that near complete thrombus dissolution is possible. No pulmonary emboli, alterations in oxygen saturation, or hemodynamics occurred with either treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Guided high MI diagnostic US+systemic MB facilitates reduction of aged CVC associated thrombi in vivo. MB enhanced sonothrombolytic therapy may be a non-invasive safe alternative to thrombolytic agents in treating thrombotic CVC occlusions
Holographic phase transitions at finite baryon density
We use holographic techniques to study SU(Nc) super Yang-Mills theory coupled
to Nf << Nc flavours of fundamental matter at finite temperature and baryon
density. We focus on four dimensions, for which the dual description consists
of Nf D7-branes in the background of Nc black D3-branes, but our results apply
in other dimensions as well. A non-zero chemical potential mu or baryon number
density n is introduced via a nonvanishing worldvolume gauge field on the
D7-branes. Ref. [1] identified a first order phase transition at zero density
associated with `melting' of the mesons. This extends to a line of phase
transitions for small n, which terminates at a critical point at finite n.
Investigation of the D7-branes' thermodynamics reveals that (d mu / dn)_T <0 in
a small region of the phase diagram, indicating an instability. We comment on a
possible new phase which may appear in this region.Comment: 33 pages, 22 figure
Natural history of extruded lumbar intervertebral disc herniation
We studied the natural history of extruded lumbar intervertebral discs using MRI. Forty-nine patients with lumbar disc herniation were included in this study. Ages ranged from 19 to 57. On the T2-weighted sagittal MR image, the signal intensity in the herniated mass was measured and the ratio to that in the original nucleus (i.e, nucleus pulposus from which they extruded) was calculated (signal intensity ratio ; SIR). The relationship with SIR and duration of illness was evaluated. In ten patients who were re-examined by MRI after conservative treatment, the size of the herniation measured by T1-weighted axial MR image was compared before and after treatment. The signal intensity of HNP became higher than that of the original nucleus immediately following herniation and thereafter decreased with time, suggesting that initial hydration of the HNP occurred shortly after herniation followed by dehydration of the HNP. The size of the HNP with a SIR value of 1.2 and higher on T2-weighted MR images decrease with time, however, the HNP with a SIR below 1.2 did not show any size reduction. The SIR of 1.2 and higher is a good indicator predicting spontaneous reduction of the HNP. Dehydration in the HNP may play an important role in the reduction of the lumbar disc herniation
Acute adrenal crisis after orthopedic surgery for pathologic fracture
BACKGROUND: Adrenal crisis after surgical procedure is a rare but potentially catastrophic life-threatening event. Its manifestations, such as hypotension, tachycardia, hypoxia, and fever mimic the other more common postoperative complications. Clinical outcome is dependent upon early recognition of the condition and proper management with exogenous steroid administration. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 75-year-old man who presented with shock immediately after surgery for a femoral fracture from lung cancer metastasis. Anemia and severe hyponatremia were detected. Despite adequate fluid resuscitation, nonspecific symptoms including hypotension, tachycardia, hypoxia, fever and confusion occurred. Emergent CT revealed enlarged bilateral adrenal glands. Under the diagnosis of adrenal crisis due to metastatic infiltration of adrenal glands, the patient was treated with appropriate steroid replacement resulting in rapid improvement and recovery. CONCLUSION: We describe a case of adrenal crisis caused by the lack of adrenal reserve based on metastatic involvement and surgical stress, the first published case of adrenal crisis after surgery for a pathologic fracture from lung cancer metastasis. Surgeons treating pathologic fractures should be aware of this complication and familiar with its appropriate therapy because of increasing opportunity to care patients with metastatic bone tumors due to recent advances in cancer treatment
