    Studying the distribution patterns, dynamics and influencing factors of city functional components by gradient analysis

    Understanding the spatial distribution characteristics and formation mechanism of urban facilities (city functional components) constitutes the basis of urban layout optimization. Currently, research on the overall distribution of the various types of city functional components is lacking. In this study, by applying the gradient analysis method common in ecology, we considered 13 types of city functional components (80,214 individuals in total) in large, medium and small Chinese cities (9 cities in total) to carry out quantitative analysis of the distribution of components along urban–rural gradients through density distribution curves. The results indicated that: (1) a higher density of city functional components near the city centre revealed an obvious aggregated distribution; (2) the spatial distribution dynamics of city functional components were related to the city size, providing a reference for the rational distribution of components in cities of different sizes; (3) the distribution of city functional components was affected by their ecosystem services. This study offers a new perspective for the application of ecological methods in the examination of the distribution of city functional components

    Systemically administered liposome-encapsulated Ad-PEDF potentiates the anti-cancer effects in mouse lung metastasis melanoma

    BACKGROUND: The use of adenoviral vector for gene therapy is still an important strategy for advanced cancers, however, the lack of the requisite coxsackie-adenovirus receptor in cancer cells and host immune response to adenovirus limit the application of adenoviral vector in vivo. METHOD: We designed the antiangiogenic gene therapy with recombinant PEDF adenovirus (Ad-PEDF) encapsulated in cationic liposome (Ad-PEDF/Liposome), and investigated the anti-tumor efficacy of Ad-PEDF/Liposome complex on inhibition of tumor metastasis. RESULTS: We found that systemic administration of Ad-PEDF/liposome was well tolerated and resulted in marked suppression of tumor growth, and was more potent than uncoated Ad-PEDF to induce apoptosis in B16-F10 melanoma cells and inhibit murine pulmonary metastases in vivo. After Ad-luciferase was encapsulated with liposome, its distribution decreased in liver and increased in lung. The anti-Ad IgG level of Ad-PEDF/Liposome was significantly lower than Ad-PEDF used alone. CONCLUSION: The present findings provide evidences of systematic administration of cationic liposome-encapsulated Ad-PEDF in pulmonary metastatic melanoma mice model, and show an encouraging therapeutic effect for further exploration and application of more complexes based on liposome-encapsulated adenovirus for more cancers

    A proposed disease classification system for duck viral hepatitis

    The nomenclature of duck viral hepatitis (DVH) was historically not a problem. However, 14 hepatotropic viruses among 10 different genera are associated with the same disease name, DVH. Therefore, the disease name increasingly lacks clarity and may no longer fit the scientific description of the disease. Because one disease should not be attributed to 10 genera of viruses, this almost certainly causes misunderstanding regarding the disease-virus relationship. Herein, we revisited the problem and proposed an update to DVH disease classification. This classification is based on the nomenclature of human viral hepatitis and the key principle of Koch's postulates (“one microbe and one disease”). In total, 10 types of disease names have been proposed. These names were literately matched with hepatitis-related viruses. We envision that this intuitive nomenclature system will facilitate scientific communication and consistent interpretation in this field, especially in the Asian veterinary community, where these diseases are most commonly reported

    Spitzer + VLTI-GRAVITY Measure the Lens Mass of a Nearby Microlensing Event

    We report the lens mass and distance measurements of the nearby microlensing event TCP J05074264+2447555. We measure the microlens parallax vector πE{\pi}_{\rm E} using Spitzer and ground-based light curves with constraints on the direction of lens-source relative proper motion derived from Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) GRAVITY observations. Combining this πE{\pi}_{\rm E} determination with the angular Einstein radius θE\theta_{\rm E} measured by VLTI GRAVITY observations, we find that the lens is a star with mass ML=0.495±0.063 MM_{\rm L} = 0.495 \pm 0.063~M_{\odot} at a distance DL=429±21 pcD_{\rm L} = 429 \pm 21~{\rm pc}. We find that the blended light basically all comes from the lens. The lens-source proper motion is μrel,hel=26.55±0.36 masyr1\mu_{\rm rel,hel} = 26.55 \pm 0.36~{\rm mas\,yr^{-1}}, so with currently available adaptive-optics (AO) instruments, the lens and source can be resolved in 2021. This is the first microlensing event whose lens mass is unambiguously measured by interferometry + satellite parallax observations, which opens a new window for mass measurements of isolated objects such as stellar-mass black holes.Comment: 3 Figures and 6 Tables Submitted to AAS Journa
