    Field studies of thermal comfort across multiple climate zones for the subcontinent: India Model for Adaptive Comfort (IMAC)

    © 2015 The Authors. India is witnessing unprecedented growth trends in building construction, particularly office spaces. Indian offices are designed to operate at 22.5 ± 1 °C all year round to meet the stringent "Class A" specifications outlined by international standards in the absence of an India-specific comfort standard. This paper proposes an India Model for Adaptive Comfort - IMAC - based on the field surveys administered in 16 buildings in three seasons and five cities, representative of five Indian climate zones. A total of 6330 responses were gathered from naturally ventilated, mixed mode and air-conditioned office buildings using instantaneous thermal comfort surveys.Occupants in naturally ventilated Indian offices were found to be more adaptive than the prevailing ASHRAE and EN models would suggest. According to the IMAC model, neutral temperature in naturally ventilated buildings varies from 19.6 to 28.5 °C for 30-day outdoor running mean air temperatures ranging from 12.5 to 31 °C. This is the first instance where a study proposes a single adaptive model for mixed mode buildings asserting its validity for both naturally ventilated and air-conditioned modes of operation in the building, with neutral temperature varying from 21.5 to 28.7 °C for 13-38.5 °C range of outdoor temperatures. For air-conditioned buildings, Fanger's static PMV model was found to consistently over-predict the sensation on the warmer side of the 7-point sensation scale

    Sizing natural ventilation systems for cooling: The potential of NV systems to deliver thermal comfort while reducing energy demands of multi-storey residential buildings in India.

    This paper aims to identify the potential of natural ventilation for cooling a representative twobedroom residential apartment layout in India. India faces an unprecedented demand for residences and must reduce energy consumption associated with air-conditioning. Three significant climates and cities in India are investigated in this paper. The potential to extend the hours of the year for which thermal comfort is achievable using natural ventilation strategies is tested. This potential is identified by employing analytical methods to design and size ventilation capacity. Five natural ventilation design strategies are used over several scenarios varying window free area and ceiling fan speed. Indoor temperature setpoints are based on the India Model for Adaptive Comfort. Results are given as percentage of hours of the year for which natural ventilation is capable to remove calculated heat gains. Percentages of hours are divided into day-time and night-time. Findings show that the combination of large windows or balcony doors with additional ventilation openings and ceiling fan increases the total percentages of hours of the year for which natural ventilation is effective impacting on substantial energy consumption reduction with air-conditioning.     Assessing the impact of control algorithms in direct evaporative cooling systems in mixed-mode buildings

    Direct evaporative cooling (DEC) is one of the most commonly used cooling systems in many parts of the world with mainly hot and dry climatic conditions. Various simulation-based studies have been conducted to explore the potential of direct evaporative cooling in buildings. However, current dynamic thermal simulation tools use a simplified on/off control approach and do not allow modelling of situations where advanced algorithms are used in controlling DEC units. This paper couples EnergyPlus with DymolaÂź to simulate and assess the benefits of sophisticated control strategies for DEC units in mixed-mode buildings. This is a novel simulation approach for investigating control of DEC units in buildings that provides great flexibility for investigating future advanced control algorithms. The simulated results suggested that using the proposed sophisticated control algorithms for DEC units it is possible to achieve energy savings up to 35% compared to the base-case scenario and achieve up to 92% comfort hours for Ahmedabad, India.     Design charts to assist on the sizing of natural ventilation for cooling residential apartments in India

    This paper presents four design charts (DC) to work as a simplified, easy-to-use and cost-effective tool to assist architects and building designers on sizing openings to deliver natural ventilation (NV) for cooling. The DC are derived from analytical techniques for four NV design systems based either on buoyancy-driven or wind-driven flow. The application of the DC is demonstrated to size NV openings for a bedroom in an apartment located in three Indian cities for two opening size scenarios: ‘business as usual’ (A); and ‘necessary size’ (B) to deliver the desired ventilation rates for cooling. The ventilation rates for cooling found with these DC are compared with outputs from computational fluid dynamics simulations. Findings show that for the earlier design stage the derived DC are effective tools. It is also found that the opening sizes used in scenario A do not deliver the desired NV rates for cooling, whilst the openings for scenario B must be sized separately for each city to be effective.</div

    Restricted epigenetic inheritance of H3K9 methylation

    Post-translational histone modifications are believed to allow the epigenetic transmission of distinct chromatin states, independently of associated DNA sequences. H3K9 methylation is essential for heterochromatin formation, however, a demonstration of its epigenetic heritability is lacking. Fission yeast has a single H3K9 methyltransferase, Clr4, that directs all H3K9 methylation and heterochromatin. Utilizing releasable tethered Clr4 reveals that an active process rapidly erases H3K9 methylation from tethering sites in wild-type cells. However, inactivation of the putative histone demethylase Epe1 allows H3K9 methylation and silent chromatin maintenance at the tethering site through many mitotic divisions, and transgenerationally through meiosis, after release of tethered Clr4. Thus, H3K9 methylation is a heritable epigenetic mark whose transmission is usually countered by its active removal, which prevents the unauthorised inheritance of heterochromatin
