Uniform heating of thin ceramic slabs in a multimode microwave cavity

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional reaction diffusion equations, which contain a functional and an inhomogeneous source term, are good models for describing microwave heating of thin ceramic slabs and cylinders in a multi mode, highly resonant cavity. A thin ceramic slab situated in a TEN03 rectangular cavity modeled in the small Biot number limit and a thin silicon wafer situated in a TM101 cylindrical cavity modeled in the small fineness ratio limit are studied to gain insight into the dynamics of the heating process. The evolution of temperature is governed by a two-dimensional reaction diffusion equation and a spatially non-homogeneous reaction term. Numerical methods are applied to accurately approximate the steady state leading order temperature of this equation and to determine the stability of solutions for Neumann boundary conditions. The choices of parameters in the equation that lead to uniform heating of the ceramic slab have been characterized

Self Signifies the Coherent Whole- Jungian Interpretation of Patrick White’s The Tree of Man

The ‘Self’ for Jung is not just ‘me’ but ‘god’. It is the coherent whole which connects with the universe. It is the whole which connects both consciousness and unconsciousness. Self is a process of individuation where all aspects are brought together as one. Thus ‘re-birth’ is returning to the Wholeness of birth before we split ourselves into many parts. The same principle can be traced in ‘nirvana’ and ecstatic harmony. It is also identical with the concept of ‘Over-Soul’ given by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Carl Jung discovered the concept of collective unconscious as the universal basis of the experience of our soul because every soul has an urge to live life creatively. He also brought the concept of the archetype into scientific discourse.  The Tree in the novel is a symbol of inexhaustible growth of spirituality. The tree is connected to man’s desire of oneness with nature which is undying, perennial, ceaseless and everlasting. Stan Parker has the longing for spirituality which is in constant clash of Amy Parker’s longing for materialism. Rose-bushes of Amy Parker get overshadowed by the giantess and largeness of the tree

Role of bundled intervention in reducing surgical site infection rate in gynecologic surgeries

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is most common nosocomial infection (15%) among surgical patient’s and contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality. CDC (2015) provides “bundled intervention for prevention of SSI. The present study was planned to evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of these bundled intervention in reducing SSI in our setup. Objectives of this study to study the effect of bundled interventions on SSI in gynaecologic surgery. Methods: A total 50 cases  undergoing gynecological surgery in elective OT included in pilot group and bundled intervention followed  these pilot group cases compared with 50 control group operated in same OT in which bundled intervention not followed outcome measures recorded were Incidence of SSI, type of SSI, need for antibiotic usage, need for secondary suturing, duration of hospital stay. Results: Out of 50 subjects in pilot group, five developed signs and symptoms of SSI giving an SSI rate of 10%. Out of those five, two had superficial SSI and three had deep SSI, none of the patient had organ space SSI.SSI rate in 50 cases operated in the same operating room during the same time period without use of bundled interventions (control group) was 12%.Conclusions: Bundled approach is easy and feasible in all setups. It adds only three extra minutes to the total duration of the surgery with risk reduction of SSI

    Automorphisms of the k-Curve Graph

Given a natural number k and an orientable surface S of finite type, define the k-curve graph to be the graph with vertices corresponding to isotopy classes of essential simple closed curves on S and with edges corresponding to pairs of such curves admitting representatives that intersect at most k times. We prove that the automorphism group of the k-curve graph of a surface S is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group for all k sufficiently small with respect to the Euler characteristic of S. We prove the same result for the so-called systolic complex, a variant of the curve graph whose complete subgraphs encode the intersection patterns for any collection of systoles with respect to a hyperbolic metric. This resolves a conjecture of Schmutz Schaller.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 1 tabl

REST-mediated recruitment of polycomb repressor complexes in mammalian cells.

Polycomb Repressive Complex (PRC) 1 and PRC2 regulate genes involved in differentiation and development. However, the mechanism for how PRC1 and PRC2 are recruited to genes in mammalian cells is unclear. Here we present evidence for an interaction between the transcription factor REST, PRC1, and PRC2 and show that RNF2 and REST co-regulate a number of neuronal genes in human teratocarcinoma cells (NT2-D1). Using NT2-D1 cells as a model of neuronal differentiation, we furthermore showed that retinoic-acid stimulation led to displacement of PRC1 at REST binding sites, reduced H3K27Me3, and increased gene expression. Genome-wide analysis of Polycomb binding in Rest⁻/⁻ and Eed⁻/⁻ mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells showed that Rest was required for PRC1 recruitment to a subset of Polycomb regulated neuronal genes. Furthermore, we found that PRC1 can be recruited to Rest binding sites independently of CpG islands and the H3K27Me3 mark. Surprisingly, PRC2 was frequently increased around Rest binding sites located in CpG-rich regions in the Rest⁻/⁻ mES cells, indicating a more complex interplay where Rest also can limit PRC2 recruitment. Therefore, we propose that Rest has context-dependent functions for PRC1- and PRC2- recruitment, which allows this transcription factor to act both as a recruiter of Polycomb as well as a limiting factor for PRC2 recruitment at CpG islands
