Possible Emergence of West Caucasian Bat Virus in Africa

    Get PDF
The prevalence of neutralizing antibody against West Caucasian bat virus (WCBV) in Miniopterus bats collected in Kenya ranged from 17% to 26%. Seropositive bats were detected in 4 of 5 locations sampled across the country. These findings provide evidence that WCBV, originally isolated in Europe, may emerge in other continents

Two New Rhabdoviruses (Rhabdoviridae) Isolated from Birds During Surveillance for Arboviral Encephalitis, Northeastern United States

Two novel rhabdoviruses were isolated from birds during surveillance for arboviral encephalitis in the northeastern United States. The first, designated Farmington virus, is a tentative new member of the Vesiculovirus genus. The second, designated Rhode Island virus, is unclassified antigenically, but its ultrastructure and size are more similar to those of some of the plant rhabdoviruses. Both viruses infect birds and mice, as well as monkey kidney cells in culture, but their importance for human health is unknown

New York, NY, USA.Nepuyo virus, represented by one strain from Trinidad and five from Brazil, reacts by hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), neutralization and complement-fixation (CF) testing with previously described group C types but is distinct from them. By HI and neutralization testing Nepuyo is most closely related to Murutucu virus, and by CF testing to Apeu and Marituba viruses
