    Fish and egg specific immunoglobin e in multiple sclerosis patients

    Background: The effect of nutrition in the course of multiple sclerosis (MS) is a topic of great interest. The present study was aimed to evaluate the immunoglobin E (IgE) against egg and fish in MS patients compared to healthy controls. Methods: Between March 2012 and July 2012, 48 MS patients were selected and compared with 48 healthy subjects to assess the frequency of IgE against egg and fish in MS patients compared to healthy control. Fish and Egg specific IgE was determined by Immuno CAP. Sex and the frequency of specific IgE were compared between study groups by Chi-square test. Results: Total of 96 subjects was assessed (22% male and 78% female). The mean age of the study subjects was 30.8 ± 6.6 years. Mean age of case and control groups was 30.7 (±6.9) versus 30.9 ± 6.3, respectively (P = 0.83). There were no detection of egg and fish specific IgE in serum of MS patients and healthy subjects. Conclusions: IgE allergy against fish and egg may be very unlikely to affect MS course

    Nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and practice towards breast cancer prevention among the female population of Iran University of medical science students

    Diet plays a measurable role in breast cancer (BC) prevention. The aims of this study were to assess nutrition-related BC prevention Knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP) of female university students and to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics of students and their KAP. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 500 female students from Iran University of Medical Science (IUMS). A pretested self-administered questionnaires were used to assess the participants� nutrition-related BC prevention KAP. A total of 500 students completed the survey. Students� knowledge with the mean score of 16.97, significantly varied by age (P= 0.03), the field of study (P= 0.001) and family history of BC (P= 0.01). The mean score of attitudes and practice toward nutrition-related BC prevention factors were 24.86 and 39.39, respectively. A significant relationship was observed between nutrition knowledge and attitude (r = 0.27, P < 0.001). Also, Nutrition-related attitudes were positively correlated with the BC prevention dietary practices (r = 0.23, P < 0.001). Nutrition KAP about BC prevention factors was found to be influenced by individual factors such as age, field of study, familial history of BC, job and residency status. Together, our findings confirm that increasing nutrition knowledge is not sufficient for dietary behavior change, but is necessary. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    Normal Range Determination of Lymphocytes Subsets in Normal Adults in Iran

    Immunophenotyping of lymphocytes is very essential for evaluation of immune system. Due  to  the  effect  of  environmental  factors  and  ethnical diversity on  immune  system, establishment of an internal normal range of lymphocyte subsets is a necessity for each population.  The  aim  of  this  study  was  to  determine  the  normal  range  of  T  and  B lymphocytes, and NK cells in normal Iranian adults. Two hundred and thirty three Iranian normal adult volunteers took part in this study. Complete Blood Count (CBC) was performed for them with Sysmex (KX21) and cells with CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19 and CD16/56  surface markers were simultaneously detected by flow cytometry method  with FACstar system. Their percentile and absolute count  were determined. The  volunteers  were  150  male  and  83  female.  Mean  percentages  of  lymphocyte subpopulation were: CD3 (67.66 ±7.76), CD19 (14.41±5.09), CD4 (39.22±6.7), CD8 (25.42±5.4) and CD16/56 (10.14±6.42). Also, their mean absolute count of lymphocyte bearing CD3, CD19, CD4 and CD8 were 1,504±505/µl, 332±186/µl, 827±313/µl and 522±185/µl, respectively. Our results are comparable with similar Asian results from other Asian population, but are different from European population, we therefore conclude that it is necessary for each laboratory to establish an internal normal range for the lymphocytes bearing above- mentioned markers

    The Study of Total IgE Reference Range in Healthy Adults in Tehran, Iran

    &quot;nBackground: IgE is an antibody class that regarded as an important factor in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, asthma, im&amp;shy;mune responses to parasitic infection and it could be responsible for the late- phase allergic response. The objective of this study was to evaluate total IgE in healthy Iranian adults, establishment of reference range of total IgE and assess helpful&amp;shy;ness of this value in clinical diagnosis atopic and allergic diseases.&quot;nMethod: Three hundred sixty six healthy adults from blood transfusion volunteers (18 to 60 years) were selected in this study. A specific questionnaire (including demographic factors, smoking status and ...) was filled out for each person. Also, we evaluated effect of race and education on total IgE. These adults had no history of allergic disease. The total serum IgE level using a commercial enzyme immunoassay and CBC (Eosinophil count) was determined in them.&quot;nResults: Mean of age was 37.32&amp;plusmn; 10.93 yrs and 219 cases were males and 147 females. The geometric mean of total IgE was 20.84 IU/ml (2-373 IU/ml) (95% percentile= 250) (95% confidence interval=46.27-62.70). No differences was observed between mean of IgE log in males and females (P= NS) but mean of total IgE log in females is more than males.&quot;nConclusion: Normal range of serum total IgE obtained in this study could be helpful for diagnosis of IgE-dependent allergic dis&amp;shy;ease, as reference ranges in Iranian healthy adults
